Newman Uses Dominant Pitching and Sixth-Inning Surge to Defeat Dunham 4-1

The baseball team opened its semifinal playoff series on Friday night at Avenger Field with a 4-1 victory over The Dunham School at Avenger Field behind a complete-game performance from ace Christian Sauska (@SauskaChristian) and a decisive four-run sixth inning.

Newman set the tone early with sharp defensive play behind the plate. In the second inning, Charles Wilson (@scharlesw2026) helped erase a scoring opportunity at home plate, preserving momentum and energizing the Greenies defensively.

Sauska controlled the game throughout the night, working efficiently and attacking the strike zone across seven complete innings. The right-hander struck out eight, allowed just five hits, and did not surrender an earned run while consistently shutting down scoring opportunities and keeping the Greenies in command of the game.

After battling through a strong pitching performance early, Newman’s offense broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning with disciplined situational baseball and relentless pressure. Designated hitter Benjamin Singer fouled off five tough pitches before hitting a single to begin the rally.

Left fielder Tanner Robert followed with a walk and Jack Falgoust (@JackFalgoust10) moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before Wilson drew a walk to load the bases.

Sauska then delivered a hard-hit ball that brought home the tying run, and Atticus LaFleur (@AtticusLaFleur) followed with a perfectly placed bunt single to give Newman the lead.

Collier Villere (@collier_villere) added a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage, and George Loop (@georgeloop8) forced in another run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Newman finished with four hits and consistently applied offensive pressure through quality at-bats, productive situational hitting, and aggressive baserunning.

Greenies Advance to State Championship Series with Semifinal Sweep

After Saturday’s game was washed out due to rainy weather, the Greenies secured their spot in the state championship series on Sunday afternoon before a huge crowd in the beautiful weather. The Greenies used timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and a five-run seventh inning to complete the semifinal sweep over the Tigers.

The Greenies struck first in the second inning, again with clutch hitting from the bottom of lineup. Senior George Loop (@georgeloop8) reached base and stole second and Tanner Robert followed with an RBI single to give Newman an early 1-0 lead.

Newman added another run in the third inning when Charles Wilson (@scharlesw2026) reached base, and following a sacrifice bunt by Christian Sauska (@SauskaChristian), Atticus LaFleur (@AtticusLaFleur) delivered an RBI single to left field to extend the lead to 2-0.

Starting pitcher Jack Falgoust (@JackFalgoust10) kept the Tigers off balance throughout his four innings on the mound, while the Newman defense turned multiple double plays to control momentum defensively.

After Dunham briefly tied the game in the middle innings, Newman answered with a dominant offensive explosion in the seventh. Robert opened the inning with a single before Falgoust laid down a sacrifice bunt to move runners into scoring position. Wilson was then intentionally walked to load the bases, and Sauska followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to give Newman a 3-2 lead. LaFleur worked a walk to reload the bases before Collier Villere was hit by a pitch to force home another run. Malcolm Schairer then lined an RBI single to center field, and Loop delivered the biggest hit of the night with a bases-clearing double to center that pushed Newman comfortably ahead at 8-2.

Wilson also continued a great defensive season behind the plate by throwing out his 24th baserunner of the year on a caught stealing in the sixth inning.

Villere closed the game in dominant fashion, tossing two scoreless innings without allowing a hit while helping secure the victory, the sweep, and Newman’s trip to the state championship series.

With the victory, the Greenies now advance to the state championship series in Sulphur, the first time Newman has made it that far since 2003. (They won the title that year, led by legendary coach Billy Fitzgerald and future major league pitcher Jeremy Bleich). The #2 seed, they’ll take on University Laboratory School, the #1 seed.

The championship games are set for Thursday at 11am, Friday at 11am and if necessary, Saturday (TBD). For those who can’t make it to Southwest Louisiana, the games will be broadcast on the free LHSAA Network TV app (Roku, Amazon, Fire Stick, Apple TV, Samsung Smart TV) and on YurView (Cox Channel 4). Track and Field

Greenies Close Strong Season with Solid Fourth-Place Finishes at State

The track and field team wrapped up its outdoor track and field campaign on a high note at the state championships last week, held at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge. The boys’ team earned a tie for fourth place with Ouachita Christian School, and the girls finished fifth, just ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School. Newman’s balanced roster delivered consistent podium performances, relay contributions, and valuable experience in what served as the final regular-season report of the year.

Boys’ Team: Throwers, Distance, and Relays Lead the Way

Senior Dylan Kolenovsky stole the show, repeating as state champion in the discus with a season-best throw of 159-01 on his final attempt. The multi-event standout also placed fourth in the shot put (47-7.25) and javelin (164-05), capping a decorated career with three-event state qualification.

In the distance events, Francis LeLong took silver in the 800m (1:59.19), and Logan DeGruy added a fourth-place finish in the 1,600m (4:37.45). The 4x800m relay team featuring DeGruy, LeLong, Asher McCoul, and Michael Madigan secured bronze with a time of 8:19.06. Madigan also placed third in the 3,200m (10:50.28).

Additional boys contributors included Nicholas Coffin, Cyrus Arjmand, DeGruy and LeLong, who ran hard in the 4x400m. The squad demonstrated depth across throwing, middle-distance, and distance disciplines against some of the state’s top programs.

Girls’ Team: Hurdles Duo and Jumps Provide Firepower

For their part, the Newman girls leaned on versatility in the hurdles and horizontal jumps. Jada Recasner earned silver in the 100m hurdles (15.21), while Remi Cousin took bronze in the same event (15.36) and silver in the long jump (16-11.50). Randall McMillan cleared 9-06.25 for silver in the pole vault (tied for second), while Madelyn Argote delivered a strong fourth-place effort in the 400m (57.60).

Relay teams also added points throughout the meet. The 4x100m squad of Lili Arjmand, Cousin, Brooke Montaño, and Recasner finished fifth (50.96). Genevieve Plaisance competed in the high jump (seventh, 4-07.75).

Season Reflection and Program Outlook

Newman’s results reflected strong coaching, development, and competitive spirit from a New Orleans-based program that consistently punches above its weight. Kolenovsky’s farewell performance while senior standouts Cousin, Lelong, and DeGruy will be sorely missed.

As the program transitions into the off-season, the foundation is laid this year, blending experienced leaders with emerging talent, and positions Newman as a continued contender in Louisiana high school track and field. Congratulations to all Greenies athletes, coaches, families, and supporters on a memorable 2026 season. The future looks bright in green and white.
