Reed Sanford led off the scoring against the Green Hornets in just the third minute, capitalizing on a throw in from wingback Thomas Smallpage, who ended up with a team-high three assists. Joe Morris quickly followed with a goal after receiving a pass in traffic from freshman Ford Summerour.

Defender Will Pinkerton scored the third goal on a 52-yard free kick that was only partially blocked by the goalkeeper, and the rout was on.

Sanford scored again on an assist from Weston Beevers, and another free kick from Pinkerton was saved by the keeper but subsequently headed in by Summerour after a header pass off the crossbar Hamilton Houghton. Summerour finished with two goals and assists, defenders Jackson Fitzpatrick and Atticus Lafleur added header goals as well, and goalkeeper Archie Casbarian had a nice save on a free kick to preserve the victory, which was ended early due to the maximum goal differential rule.

This afternoon at 5pm, the top power-ranked Greenies (8-2-1) will continue their seven-game homestand with their first match ever against Lycée Français International de la Louisiane (5-3-0). Then on Thursday at 7pm (1/15), the boys will host The Willow School (14-3-1) in a rematch of last year’s exciting draw.

Boys Basketball

Greenies Ride Momentum with Back-to-Back Wins Over Kenner Discovery and Young Audiences

The boys basketball team is finding its rhythm at the right time, putting together two impressive victories that showcased resilience, execution, and team defense.

Overtime Grit vs. Kenner Discovery

Newman’s first win of the week came in dramatic fashion against Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy in a 69-66 overtime thriller. When the odds were stacked against them late, Newman dug deep. With 40.6 seconds left on the clock, Aaron Washington Jr. buried a clutch three-pointer that cut the deficit to one and ignited the momentum Newman needed to seize control.

From there, the Greenies took over. Sly Johnson led all scorers with 17 points, while Pierce Cunningham dominated inside, pouring in 16 points in the paint. CJ Encalarde was steady at the free-throw line with 13 points, and Carter Farnsworth added 10, including key contributions during overtime. Washington Jr. finished with 8 points overall, his late heroics setting the tone for the comeback against the Swamp Owls.

Physical Battle at Young Audiences

Friday night brought another challenge on the road against the Young Audiences Charter Academy. In a packed gym with an electric home crowd, Newman faced a physical, high-energy matchup and answered with toughness and discipline, especially on the defensive end.

Head Coach Jason Templet praised the team’s collective effort, highlighting their interior defense against the Yaks’ 6’8” center. It was a true all-around performance with multiple bodies, smart rotations, and relentless effort in the paint, fueling a decisive 55–43 win.

What’s Next

With momentum building, the Greenies will look to keep rolling when they host The Willow School basketball team tonight at 7pm, following Senior Night for the girls, for Faculty Appreciation Night, where the basketball team invites all the Newman teachers and staff to the game. If the past week is any indication, Newman’s blend of clutch shot-making, balanced scoring, and locked-in defense has them trending in the right direction.

Girls Soccer

The girls soccer team hosted St. Mary’s Dominican High School (16-0-3) last week in a tightly contested match on VSN here that was scoreless at halftime. Dominican came out strong in the second half, though, netting two goals to take control of the game. Newman answered with a free kick goal just outside the box from Sara Córdova after a foul on Lili Arjmand, but the rally fell short as Dominican held on for a 2–1 victory.

On Saturday (1/10), Newman traveled to Covington for a neutral site match against Lafayette’s St. Thomas More (8-3-5). Despite generating several quality scoring chances, Newman was unable to break through as the game remained scoreless through the first half and deep into the second. With just two minutes remaining, the Cougars found the net on a spectacular goal to take the lead. Newman pressed late but could not equalize, resulting in a hard-fought 1–0 loss.

Tonight at 7pm, the girls will host Lycée Français International de la Louisiane in a double header with the boys. On Friday (1/16) at 5pm, the girls will trek to LaPlace for a match against St. Charles Catholic High School and on Monday (1/19) at 5pm, they will play Division I’s top-ranked St. Joseph’s Academy at home.

Indoor Track and Field

Newman Track & Field Bursts Out of the Blocks at LSU High School Classic

At Saturday’s opening LSU High School Classic, the Greenies stepped into a high-energy atmosphere packed with elite teams from near and far. With the sound of spikes on the track, the echo of the starter’s gun, and a sea of competition filling the LSU indoor facility, Newman athletes rose to the occasion, delivering personal bests, record-breaking performances, and unforgettable moments.

Girls Set the Tone Early

The highlight of the meet came from junior Jada Recasner, who wasted no time making history. In her first-ever indoor 60-meter dash, Jada tore down the straightaway in 8.29 seconds, shattering the school record of 8.51 and finishing 53rd out of 130 sprinters in a loaded field. She then returned to the track for the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a personal-best 9.78 and placing 14th out of 43, proving her versatility and poise under pressure.

Sophomore Madelyn Argote showed confidence in the 400 meters, finishing 32nd out of 100 runners, while juniors Sophie Nguyen and Emma Grace Stewart took on the 1600 meters. Seine Gala, a sophomore, represented Newman in the 800 meters, senior Remi Cousin competed in the 60-meter dash and hurdles, and sophomore Eleanor Wise showcased her athleticism in the long jump.

The girls 4x200 relay team of Ann Kellogg, Lauren Kearney, Elise Barnett, and Madelyn Argote powered through a field of over 20 teams, and the girls 4x800 team of Nguyen, Gala, Elise Barnett, and Stewart fought stride for stride in another tightly packed race.

Boys Bring Power, Speed, and Surprise

On the boys’ side, senior Dylan Kolenovsky placed 8th out of 41 in the shot put (46 feet) and then electrified the crowd as lead-off runner in the 4x200 relay with the team's fastest split. Senior distance standout Logan DeGruy finished 20th in a 97-runner 1600-meter field, while sophomore Michael Madigan gained experience in the same event. Sophomore Julian DeGruy doubled in the 400 meters and long jump and junior Kai Oyemade also competed in the 400 meters. Freshman Jonah White made his indoor debut in the 800 meters, and senior Liam Wilder competed in the shot put. The relays shone, with Kolenovsky, Julian DeGry, Oyemade and Andres L’Esperance running strong in the 4×200 and Logan DeGruy, Jonah White, Michael Madigan and L’Esperance performing well in the 4×800 against 29 elite teams.

The Greenies are definitely off and running, and the rest of the indoor season should be just as exciting.
