Swimming
The Newman swim team has kicked off the season with two strong meets, setting the stage for an exciting year ahead.
![]() Instagram: @newmanathleticsphotos | The season opened with the annual Green and White Meet, an intrasquad competition that brought together middle school and upper school swimmers. The meet showcased the depth and talent of Newman’s program, with athletes across all grades demonstrating speed, energy, and team spirit. Both teams look poised for a promising season, and the squad extends its thanks to all who came out to support the swimmers. |

Volleyball
Last Week’s Highlights
It was a strong start for all three Newman teams as Varsity, JV Green, and JV White swept Hahnville High School last Tuesday night. Each team won in straight sets, with the JV squads setting the tone early before Varsity followed with a commanding three-set victory, not giving up a set. Setters Nola Borges and Susu Milling managed the offense with confidence, giving their hitters excellent opportunities to score. Libero/Captain Jesse Lambert anchored the defense, covering the court and keeping plays alive as Newman controlled the match from start to finish.
The varsity squad carried that momentum into the Assumption High School Tournament later in the week. On Thursday, the team went 2-0, defeating Lutcher High School in straight sets and South Lafourche High School in a tight match winning two out of three sets.
Saturday brought tougher competition, but Varsity rose to the challenge, beating Vandebilt Catholic High School in straight sets. Defensive passing from Lambert, Leilani Reid, and Captain Caroline Beahm kept the offense steady, while Cori Cenac and Jailly Vance delivered big swings in the middle at the net. The run ended in the semifinals against a talented E.D. White Catholic High School team, but Newman battled hard in both sets before falling short.
This Week Ahead
Tuesday: All three teams travel to Chalmette High School for a regular season match
Thursday: Varsity, JV Green, and JV White host Ponchatoula High School for their first home matches of the season
Friday & Saturday: Varsity travels to Dutchtown High School for its second tournament of the year
Season Outlook
The varsity team sits at 4-1 on the young season, showing both resilience and depth across the entire roster. With steady contributions from setters, hitters, and a strong defensive back row, the program looks poised to keep building momentum as September unfolds. Go Greenies!
Football
On Thursday (9/4), the Greenies packed up the bus and travelled to LaPlace to battle St. Charles Catholic High School. The game featured the first start for senior captain Jake Randle at quarterback. With a new run pass option (RPO), Randle led the rushing with 16 attempts for 53 yards. He also attempted 10 passes, completing seven for 109 yards and a 70% completion rate. Randle sustained a 10 yard per pass average and completed his longest pass (40 yards) to senior wide receiver Collier Villere. | ![]() Instagram: @derickhingle |
Villere led the receiving corps with five receptions for 103 yards. Sophomore tight end Augie Sauska caught his first pass of the season for a six-yard gain. Senior captain George Loop got into the RPO run action with three carries, as did sophomore Tanner Robert for four carries. After a long drive the Greenies were able to capitalize with a field goal by senior Jack “Goose” Falgoust for their lone points for the night.
The Green Machine defense fought valiantly all night holding the Comets to no offensive points in the first half. The defensive efforts were led by the efforts of senior Archie Casbarian, which included nine tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack, and a blocked kick. Senior Corbett “Corvette” Parrino brought the wood for four tackles, including two tackles for loss. Sophomore AJ Yunusah and senior Ian O’Boyle both had tackles for loss and multiple tackles. In the end, though, it wasn’t enough to topple the strong Comets team for the second time in a row.
Next up, the Greenies host Riverside Academy on Friday (9/12) at 7pm at Lupin Field. Bring the whole family and let’s turn out big and loud to support these hard working Greenies and get our first win of the season at home this week!

On Friday (9/5), the cross country team participated in their first meet of the season at the Battle for New Orleans Twilight Race at the University of New Orleans. The course was challenging, but a few runners managed standout performances despite the rough terrain. Juniors Heidi Smith and Catherine Johnson both had top-10 finishes in the Girls Silver 2-mile race, and junior Sophie Nguyen and sophomore Emma Grace Stewart placed 6th and 9th in the Girls Blue 5K race. And in the final and most competitive race of the evening, Senior Rivers Lelong placed 7th in the Boys Invitational 5K race with a time of 17:10. Results can be found here.
