Football

On Friday (8/30), the Greenies kicked off their 2024 campaign by hosting down-the-street rival De La Salle High School for the annual Football Jamboree. The Greenies were led on offense by senior captain and quarterback Eli Friend who completed nine passes, including a 68-yard deep strike to the game’s leading receiver, junior Charles Wilson, and a 4-yard touchdown in the red zone to junior wide receiver Collier Villere. Junior running back Jake Randle led the team in rushing yards, and junior kicker Jack “Goose” Falgoust nailed his PAT and a 43-yard field goal to bring the Greenies’ final point total of the night to 10.

The defense, led by defensive linemen and senior captains Justin Wells and Brett Bordelon, and junior Henry Jackson, stifled the offensive efforts of the Crusaders most of the night. Bordelon tipped a pass that was intercepted by new starting linebacker junior Corbett Parrino. Senior James Reiss and junior Archie Casbarian each had sacks, while Falgoust and senior Alex Dulitz both had pass breakups (PBUs).

With the score even at 10-10, the offense made one last drive late with time expiring. The Greenies attempted a long field goal to take the lead, but alas, the wind pushed the kick wide left, leaving the final score tied, 10-10.

This Friday, September 6, the Greenies host the rival St Charles Catholic Comets at Lupin Field at 7pm for the first full regulation game of the year. There will be a packed house, so come early and support the Greenies!

Swimming

The Newman Varsity Swim Team officially kicked off their season with enthusiasm and focus as they dove into their first month of practices. Led by team captains Nick Rezza '25 and Vivian Zhou '26, the swimmers have been putting in hard work at the Gottesman Pool, preparing for what promises to be an exciting season.

The team gathered for their first team dinner at Company Burger to celebrate the start of the season. The event was perfect for the swimmers to bond outside the pool, strengthen team spirit, and set the tone for the challenges ahead.

Looking ahead, the team will be hosting their first meet of the season, the Green & White Intrasquad Meet, this Friday at 4 PM at the Gottesman Pool on the Newman campus. The middle school team will join the varsity swimmers, providing a great opportunity for both groups to compete, learn, and grow together. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Greenies this fall as they make a splash in what promises to be an exhilarating 2024 season! Go Greenies!

Volleyball
