Cross Country
The Newman Cross Country team is off to a great start! This past Friday, they participated in the UNO Season Opener where the Boys’ team finished with First Place and the Girls’ team finished in Second Place (see below pic of the full team and their trophies).
Sam Haber, a Senior and Team Captain, finished 1st Place overall in the UNO Season Opener with a time of 16:40. Logan DeGruy, Maslen L’Esperance, Rivers Lelong, Jack Hance, and Tripp deLaureal were all Top 10 finishers as well.
For the girls, Avery Summerour, Kennedy Miller, and Adrianne Zura were Top 10 finishers.
For his standout performance at the UNO Season Opener, Sam Haber has been nominated by Mile Split for Lousiana’s Boys’ Performer of the Week. PLEASE cast your vote in support of Haber by clicking on the following link: LA XC Performer of the Week.
This Saturday, September 9, Newman XC will run in the Episcopal Round Table at Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge. Go Greenies!
Football
In its home opener last Friday, Newman trounced the 5A Hahnville Tigers, with solid performances in all three phases of the game. The Greenie defense led the way, generating 4 turnovers and two defensive scores. It started with a momentum shifting first quarter interception by Jack Nesser, which led to a Newman field goal. Then, Senior Safety Parker Davis got in on the fun with an interception and long return, as the Greenies took a 20-14 lead into intermission. Early in the third, Junior DB Brandon Favrot dropped the hammer on a Hahnville WR, breaking up a Tigers pass attempt as the football floated into the welcoming arms of Senior Middle Linebacker Bobby Kerrigan. The opportunistic Kerrigan quickly shed a tackle and rumbled to the house for a pick six that put Newman up 34-14. On the very next possession, Favrot was at it again, recovering a Tigers fumble and returning it for yet another defensive score.
In addition to the turnovers, the Newman D got terrific play from Outside Linebackers William Darragh and Isaiah Grant, and from a quartet of warriors battling on both sides of the ball: “Big B” Brandon Wilkins, Brett Bordelon, Will Loerzel, and D.J. Thomas.
In his first varsity start, Junior Quarterback Eli Friend was simply outstanding, completing 9 of 14 passes for 195 yards and three scores, on his way to Nola.com Player of The Game honors. With his standout performance, Friend is also in the running for Nola.com Player of the Week (please cast your vote for the Greenie QB by clicking this link: POW Voting). Picking up where he left off last season, Peter Loop had 96 receiving yards and two TDs. Senior WR Journey Manson caught the third touchdown, and Anthony Jones had two highlight-reel TD receptions called back on penalties. Once again, the Newman O-Line of Bordelon, Big B, Thionville, Maxwell & Manning were dominant, protecting the pocket and creating massive holes for Friend and Jake Randle, who combined for over 100 yards rushing.
The final score was Newman 41 Hahnville 21, as placekicker Jacob Dusansky stayed perfect, making two field goals and all five extra points.
Next Friday, the Greenies travel to Reserve, Louisiana to take on long-time rival Riverside Academy.

Swimming
The Newman Varsity Swim Team took a well deserved break from the lap lanes to celebrate with a team dinner on Friday night. Pizza, and team bonding, were the order of the night. Coach Alison Cransac distributed this year's team shirt over dessert.
The Varsity team looks forward to taking on the middle school at the annual Green & White Meet on Friday, September 8th.
Volleyball
The first week of Newman VB is in the books. On Tuesday, both the JV Green and Varsity impressed their coaches without losing a set to Booker T. Washington. On Wednesday, the JV White competed in the Play Day Fontainebleau Tournament defeating both Northshore and Fontainebleau High Schools.
On Thursday and Saturday, the Varsity traveled to Assumption Parish for a 2-day tournament finishing 2-2. Entering the tournament as the number one seed on Thursday, the Varsity Greenies battled Notre Dame (23-25, 22-25) and were just shy of securing a win, then came back strong against East Ascension (25-19, 25-16), finishing the day 1–1. On Saturday, our Greenies took a loss to Ben Franklin High School (20-25, 21-25); however, finished strong against St. Scholastica Academy winning in 3 (25-18, 22-25, 15-8). The VB Greenies are off to an impressive start and we’re looking forward to what the coming weeks will bring.
At home this week, JV White, JV Green, and Varsity will take on Ponchatoula High School Tuesday (9/5) beginning at 4:30. Then at home again Thursday (9/7), JV Green and Varsity will play Lakeshore High School beginning at 4:30. Please come out and support our Volleyball teams!
