On Friday (9/26), the Newman football team came out and dominated the previously undefeated The Willow School by the score of 40-8 at Lupin Field. Led by senior captain and quarterback Jake Randle, the Greenies offense really found its stride. Randle posted 310 all-purpose yards, accounting for 223 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns. He completed 10 of 13 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown pass to senior captain George Loop in the first quarter to get the Greenies going. Senior kicker Jack “Goose” Falgoust closed the second quarter with a 28-yard field goal.

For his heroics, Randle was recognized by the Allstate Sugar Bowl Manning Award Futures Program as an outstanding area high school quarterback of the week. Randle was also nominated by NOLA.com as a candidate for its New Orleans Area Prep Football Player of the Week. Vote for him by clicking here! |

Junior quarterback Ren Guidry also got into the action, completing all four of his pass attempts for 54 yards total and a touchdown pass to Thomas Smallpage for the sophomore’s first varsity touchdown reception. Falgoust finished with the field goal, three PATs and two touchbacks on his kickoffs. Senior kicker Will Pinkerton nailed a 35-yard field goal and a PAT of his own, and overcame an earlier penalty by the offense in the fourth quarter with a 75-yard kickoff for a touchback.

The Green Machine Defense made their own statement, shutting out the Lions until the starters had retired with a 40-point lead in the middle of the fourth quarter. A swarming rush and airtight defensive backfield accounted for an incredible five interceptions on the night. Juniors Hendrix Hill and Malcolm Schairer, sophomores AJ Yunusah and Colin Farnsworth and freshman Jayce Irving all got interceptions. Seniors Corbett Parrino, Ian O’Boyle, and Henry Jackson led the upfront rush and tackling pressure campaign. Archie Casbarian stalked his prey from the corner and accounted for four solo tackles and two tackles for loss (TFLs). Falgoust cleaned up with five tackles and a TFL and Ian O’Boyle had two TFLs and a forced fumble.

Volleyball
Last Week
The JV Green and JV White teams continued their winning streaks, remaining undefeated after another strong week. JV Green battled Archbishop Chapelle High School in a hard-fought match, ultimately securing the win through grit and consistency. JV White delivered a commanding victory over Chalmette High School, showing sharp execution from start to finish. On Saturday, a combined JV Green/White team competed in their first tournament of the season, gaining valuable experience against high-level JV competition and proving the program’s depth is a real strength.
Meanwhile, the varsity squad faced a tough Archbishop Chapelle High School team on Tuesday night. While the Greenies didn’t get the result they wanted against the Chipmunks, the match provided important lessons. The focus moving forward is on being more aggressive in key moments, and playing to win rather than playing not to lose. Although the team isn’t yet where it wants to be when November comes around, meaningful progress has been made in recent weeks, and the players are committed to continuing that growth.

Looking Ahead
Today’s home matchup with E.D. White Catholic High School will be a strong test for all three teams. The two JV teams will play simultaneously on separate courts in the Palaestra at 4:30pm, followed by Varsity at approximately 5:30pm.
Additional Note
Last Thursday after practice, all three teams gathered to celebrate a baby shower for one of their coaches, Kenny Marroccoli. Coach Kenny and his wife, Fallon, are fostering a baby girl who will soon become a permanent part of their family. It was a special moment for the program to show their love and support for the coach and his family as they begin this exciting new chapter.

Cross Country
On Saturday (9/27), the cross country team traveled to Baton Rouge to compete in the St. Joseph's Academy Cross Country Invitational. It was another successful day, with 13 runners achieving new personal bests.
In the Boys' Varsity race, Rivers Lelong finished in ninth place overall, setting a new personal record for the third week in a row! Tripp de Laureal was Newman's second runner to cross the finish line, and Asher McCoul was third, also setting a new personal record. Varsity Girls runners pose before their race
The team has a couple weeks off from competition but will be racing again at Newman's very own Randy Zell Cross Country Classic on Saturday, October 18 at City Park starting at 7:30am. This event will also be Senior Day, where we will honor all of our senior runners. All are welcome to come out and show their support for the team and for beloved Coach Zell!
Swimming
The swim team competed at home on Saturday (9/27) in a spirited meet that doubled as Senior Night. The team honored its four graduating seniors: Morgan Breaux ’26 (Captain), Vivian Zhou ’26 (Captain), Anjali Dasa ’26, and Turner Mazzanti ’26. All four began their Newman swimming careers in 6th grade and have remained dedicated to the program throughout middle and high school. | ![]() |
![]() | One of the highlights of the day came in the Girls 200 Freestyle Relay, where the team of Breaux, Zhou, Madelyn Argote ’27, and Charlotte Norwood ’27 placed second overall and set a new personal record. The meet also brought exciting state qualifications: Quinn Ogg ’28 became a first-time state qualifier, earning spots in both the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke while setting two new personal records. |
Captain Vivian Zhou ’26 has now officially qualified for all eight individual events, a remarkable achievement that underscores her consistency and versatility.
The team will return to the pool on Saturday, October 11 at home, looking to build on their momentum and continue preparing for the state meet.
