Cross Country

The Newman Cross Country team had a fantastic Saturday in Ruston, LA at the Cedar Creek Invitational. Four Newman runners placed in the Top 10.

Sam Haber won the Boys’ Varsity race finishing 1st Place with a new record of 15:33. Logan DeGruy came in 3rd Place, Maslen L’Esperance was 8th Place, and Ava Hartman finished 2nd Place in the Girls’ Varsity race.

The Boys’ team took home the 1st Place trophy and the Girls’ team took home the 2nd Place trophy. Way to go, Greenies!

This week, Ava Hartman is up for the MileSplit LA Girls’ XC Runner of the week! Please vote for Ava by clicking here LA MileSplit.

The XC team will race again on Saturday, October 7th in Highland Park at the Catholic High Invitational.

Football

Last Friday, the Greenies had a rematch with the Many Tigers in a home game at Michael Lupin Field. The boys were motivated to avenge last year’s loss at Many, and received some extra bulletin board incentive when early in the week the Many Quarterback announced to a local media outlet: “Ain’t nobody gonna stop us, and that’s a fact.”

In response, the Greenies locked the gate, and put on one of the most physically dominant displays in recent memory, on the way to a 49-31 win.

Eli Friend was exceptional in leading Newman to victory. Friend passed for 4 touchdowns and 225 yards, and ran for another 2 TDs and 75 yards. For his extraordinary efforts, Friend was awarded Nola.com Player of the Game and is in the running for Fox 8 Football Friday Player of the Week (please cast your vote for Friend by clicking here).

Jacob Dusansky (7/7 on PATs and 8 critical touchbacks on kickoffs), Jake Randle (80 yards rushing and a TD), Peter Loop (98 yards receiving and 2 TDs), and George Loop (first Varsity TD) also contributed to Newman’s huge offensive outburst.

The equally impressive Greenie D was led by the dynamic duo of Felipe Suazo and Justin Wells, who combined for an unbelievable 23 tackles, 4 sacks and 4 tackles for loss.

This tough, team-first bunch of gritty Greenies also benefited from multiple players contributing on both sides of the ball (Heid Manning, D.J. Thomas, and Brett Bordelon) and others playing through injuries (James Reiss, Henry Jackson, Isaiah Grant, Paolo Guillen, and Jack Nesser).

With the win, Newman moved to 4-0 and has a week off before returning to action against Belle Chasse at home on October 6.

Swimming

The Newman Swim Team took a much needed break as they prepare for their next away meet at the St. James Parish Aquatic Center on September 30th.

The team engaged in a spirited game of water polo followed by a team dinner outside of the Palaestra.

Volleyball

Volleyball was on the move this past week.  Tuesday, September 19th, JV Green and Varsity traveled to Ursuline and both came home with sweeping victories.  JV Green successfully won their match in 2 sets and Varsity in 3 sets. Tuesday at Newman, JV White battled Academy of Our Lady where they won in 2 sets.  Thursday, September 21st, the Greenies hosted Dominican High School in the Palaestra and came up just short of the win.  Great competition makes you better.

Friday, September 22nd, Varsity traveled to Ruston for the Ruston High School Tournament, where they were joined by the Greenie Cross Country team, who competed Saturday morning at Cedar Creek High School. Volleyball played Friday evening against St. Michael’s Academy from Baton Rouge and won in 2 sets and then played West Monroe High School and again won in 2 sets.  Exhausted from the drive and games, the team and parents alike retired to the hotel for dinner and to watch a successful Newman football game in the hotel lobby along with the Cross Country team.  Saturday morning came early, as they played their first game at 8:00 AM against Parkway High School from Bossier City and won in 2 sets; second, they played Ruston High School where they came up just shy of the win playing in 2 sets; and, lastly, they played Airline High School from Shreveport, where they successfully took home the win in 2 sets.  It was a very successful weekend for Newman Volleyball both on and off the court!

This week, all teams travel to Chalmette High School on Tuesday, September 26th, JV White and JV Green games will begin at 4:30, with Varsity to follow around 5:30.  Thursday, September 28th, all teams play rival Ben Franklin High School.  JV White will begin at 4:30, JV Green at 5:30, and Varsity to follow at 6:30.  Come out and support your Greenies and cheer them on to Victory.

We look forward to seeing Greenie Fans in the stands!
