Volleyball
Last week, the Newman varsity volleyball girls were upset at home by the Hahnville in three close sets, 25-27, 23-25, and 20-25. The broadcast on VSN can still be seen here. Fortunately, the JV Green and JV White teams went undefeated against the Tigers. Great job girls!

Over the weekend, the varsity girls headed to North Louisiana for the 10th annual Bearcat Brawl in Ruston, Louisiana. The team started off strong with wins against Airline (25-15, 25-16) and West Monroe (25-10, 25-16) before taking a big loss on Saturday to Dunham in three sets (25-18, 11-25, 10-15). The girls bounced back with a big victory over Sam Houston (24-26, 25-20, 15-13), before ending the day with a very close loss to Calvary Baptist (24-26, 20-25). The girls had a great run, with standout performances from the entire varsity squad!
This week, the varsity girls, now with a record of 7-4 on the season, will play Chalmette today (9/24) at 5:30pm at the Palaestra (and on VSN here), and take on De La Salle on Thursday (9/26), also at home. Tickets for both matches can be purchased here. Then on Saturday (9/28), the girls will head to Baton Rouge for Woodlawn High School’s Rumble in the Jungle tournament. Best of luck and Go Greenies!
Football
After two weeks off due to the storm and a scheduled bye week, Newman football is back on Friday (9/27)! The Greenies (1-0) will be the visitors this week, but still in the neighborhood as they take on The Willow School Lions at 7pm at Brees Family Field. Tickets for the away game can be purchased here, so see you there!

Swimming
The varsity swim team kicked off its season with an impressive showing at its first official meet this past weekend. Despite tough competition, the Greenies delivered standout performances, setting the tone for a promising season. Morgan Breaux ’26 made a splash by placing 2nd in the Girls 200 Freestyle and 3rd in the Girls 100 Breaststroke. Vivian Zhou ’26 continued to showcase her talent, securing 1st place in the Girls 200 IM, while Anjali Dasa ’26 earned 3rd place in the Girls 50 Freestyle.
Several swimmers also achieved state-qualifying times:
Nick Rezza ’25 – 500 Freestyle
Elias Hutchings ’25 – 500 Freestyle
Vivian Zhou ’26 – 200 IM & 100 Backstroke
Morgan Breaux ’26 – 200 Freestyle & 100 Breaststroke
Anjali Dasa ’26 – 100 Breaststroke
Charlotte Norwood ’27 – 500 Freestyle
The team is looking to build on this momentum as it heads to Baton Rouge for its next meet this Saturday, September 28th, at 9:30am. Wish the swimmers luck as they aim for even greater success! Go Greenies!
Cross Country
On Saturday (9/21), the cross country team traveled to North Louisiana to compete in the Ruston Invitational. The course conditions were much better than last week’s in Baton Rouge. However, the race organizers threw the kids a curve ball by changing the course layout from prior years, so all runners approached the finish line from the bottom of a hill, rather than running down from the top. Despite this challenge, the team still turned in an impressive performance. All four of the teams finished in the top three of their respective categories: JV girls-1st place; Varsity boys-2nd place; Varsity girls-3rd place; JV boys-3rd place)!
Special congrats to those individuals placing in the top 10 of their respective races:
JV girls:
Megan Zurik (2nd - JV girls)
Jadyn Scwhartz (3rd - JV girls)
Sophie Nguyen (4th -JV girls)
Sydney Gallagher (5th - JV girls)
Emma Grace Stewart (7th - JV girls)
Mia Pollack (8th -JV girls)
Varsity boys:
Maslen L'Esperance (7th - Varsity boys)
Rivers LeLong (8th - Varsity boys)
Also, congratulations to Jack Hance and Asher McCoul for establishing new 3-mile career personal records (PRs)!
JV boys:

Bonus moment: Meeting up with the volleyball team, in town for a tournament also taking place in Ruston that weekend!
The next meet will be the St. Joseph's Invitational on October 5 at Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge.
