Cross Country
Newman's varsity and JV cross country teams had their first races of the season last Saturday (9/4) at the Highland Road Park course in Baton Rouge. Despite the terrible condition of the rain-soaked course, the boys’ team finished 7th out of 28 teams (2nd among schools in the division), and the girls were 9th out of 24 teams (also 2nd among schools in the division).
On the boys side, Maslen L'Esperance finished 9th overall with a strong three-mile time of 16:32...way to go Mas! Overall, Newman's runners ran an impressive race, particularly the freshmen who competed for the first time in a three-mile race, and for some runners, this event was their first cross country race ever. On a day where no one was expected to set a personal record (PR), two young men, Aaron Washington and Cordell Crawford set new career marks. Well done, gentlemen! As shown by the boys results here, Greenies runners Rivers Lelong, Jack Hance, Asher McCoul, and Michael Madigan rounded out the top five.

Freshmen runners led the way for the girls, with Elise Barnett finishing in the top 50, followed closely by Emma Grace Stewart and Megan Zurik. Sophomores Sophie Nguyen and Charlotte Estrada also logged strong scoring times for the Greenies. All results for the girls race can be found here.

Up next is the team's annual trek to north Louisiana and the newly-named Ruston Invitational at Lincoln Parish Park, starting at 8am on Saturday (9/21). Run Greenies Run!
Football
The Greenies were scheduled to play their second game of the season last Friday (9/13) at Riverside Academy in Reserve. Due to Hurricane Francine, the game was originally postponed with hopes of rescheduling. As the storm passed through Metairie/Kenner and St Charles Parish, dropping upwards of 10 inches of rain in Reserve, however, the Riverside Academy families sustained significant flooding in their area and the game was fully canceled.
This week is a scheduled bye week, so the team is healing, conditioning, and working on game plans for the remainder of the season. Despite best efforts, there were no viable options for a mid-season make up game or an add on game.
One week from Friday (9/27), the Green Machine will be back in action just a few blocks away at The Willow School, 5624 Freret Street. Kickoff is at 7pm.
Swimming
The swim meet last Saturday (9/14) was unfortunately canceled due to the hurricane, but the Newman varsity swim team hasn’t let that slow them down. The swimmers have been working hard at practice, focusing on honing their technique and improving their endurance.
The team is ready for their first official competition this Saturday (9/21). The meet will take place at Newman’s Gottesman Pool, starting at 9:30am, and will feature several schools from around the city. After weeks of dedicated preparation, the Newman team is eager to dive into action and make a strong start to the season. Be sure to come out and support the Greenies as they make a splash in their first meet! Go Greenies!
Volleyball
Last week, the varsity volleyball team had two big matches set against Fontainebleau and Pope John Paul II, but both were canceled due to the weather. This evening (9/17) at 7pm, the girls will host Hahnville High at home in the Palaestra. Tickets are available here.
The team will finish the week in the Ruston Tournament in north Louisiana. Wish them luck! Go Greenies!
