Cross Country

Saturday was a fantastic day of racing for the Newman Cross Country team! Our runners participated in the Episcopal Round Table Meet in Baton Rouge.

The Newman Girls’ team finished in 4th Place out of 27 teams. Our Boys’ team finished in 7th Place out of 42 teams.

Sam Haber set the new School Record for Newman with a time of 15:53. Congratulations, Sam

Overall, Newman had three Top 20 finishers on Saturday:

Ava Hartman – 5th Place in the Girls Varsity race (out of 200 runners)

Sam Haber – 7th Place in the Boys Varsity race (out of 363 runners)

Logan DeGruy – 18th Place in the Boys Varsity race (out of 363 runners)

Newman XC will run in Ruston, LA on Saturday, September 23 in the Wallace Martin Invitational. Go Greenies!

Football

The Greenies moved to 2-0 with a physical road win over the Riverside Academy Rebels in Reserve, Louisiana on Friday night. In a close impersonation of Colorado Buffalo’s two-way star Travis Hunter, Senior DB/WR D.J. “Shifty” Thomas stood out for the Greenies on both sides of the ball. Thomas had a team leading 80 yards receiving plus a TD on offense, and an interception with a long return on defense. Once again, the Greenie offensive line (Brett Bordelon, Brandon Wilkins, Marcel Thionville, Griffin Maxwell & Heid Manning) and Senior TE Will Loerzel dominated the line of scrimmage, overpowering the Rebels. Sophomore RB Jake Randle had 125 yards rushing and two scores, and received the Nola.com Player of the Game award. Late in the game, Freshman RB Hendrix Hill spun out of a tackle and flashed jets of his own on a 75 yard TD run, foreshadowing a future Newman backfield of Randle and Hill that will be exciting to watch. Quarterback Eli Friend had another efficient outing, completing 8 passes for over 200 yards, with TD passes to Thomas and Peter Loop.

The Newman Defense continued its strong play, creating 3 turnovers while holding the Rebel offense to 7 points. Senior Defensive End Felipe “Flip” Suazo led the team in tackles and had a sack, while Junior Defensive Back Alexander Dulitz came down with his first career interception. Bobby Kerrigan added a fumble recovery and, along with fellow Seniors William Darragh and Jack Nesser, pounded the Rebels on multiple tackles.

Jacob Dusansky made three extra points before having two PAT attempts blocked late in the game. The final score was Newman 33 Riverside 7.

This week, Newman turns it around quickly with a long road trip to North Louisiana for a Thursday night tilt with the 5A Benton Tigers.

Swimming

The varsity swim team kicked off its season at home on Friday afternoon. The Green & White Meet with the Middle School Swim team is always an annual favorite.

This year's meet did not disappoint. One highlight of the event was the mixed relay race where teams consisted of both high school and middle school swimmers.

Despite it only being their first meet of the season,  several swimmers have already qualified for individual events at the State Swim Meet in Sulphur, Louisiana. Vivian Zhou ('26) qualified in both the 200 IM and 100 Back.  Morgan Breaux ('26) qualified in the 100 Breast. Finally, Anjali Dasa ('26) qualified in the 100 Breast. Great job, Greenies!

Volleyball

It was another impressive week for Newman Volleyball! Tuesday, September 5th, JV White, JV Green, and Varsity took on Ponchatoula High School in the Palestra.  JV White came out strong bringing home the victory in 2 sets.  JV Green lost the 1st set, came back and won the 2nd set, sending them into the dreaded 3rd set, where they were just a couple points shy of winning the match.  Varsity had their fans on the edge of their seats as they battled 5 sets against Ponchatoula.  They lost the first 2 sets and fought fiercely, coming back and winning the next 3 sets to pull off the victory.  Our Varsity players attribute their win to our amazing, team-spirited JV players who loudly and proudly cheered Varsity to a victory.

Thursday, September 7th, JV Green and Varsity played Lakeshore High School in the Palestra.  JV Green won in a quick 2 sets (25-10 and 25-22), but our Varsity again took their games to 5 sets and pulled out another incredible win.

JV Green played in the Chapelle Tournament Friday and Saturday.  Friday, they went 1-1, winning against a strong Destrehan team and then taking a loss to Dominican.  On Saturday, JV Green took down Thomas Jefferson High School, sending them to the semi-finals, where they played Fontainebleau High School.  They were down in the 1st set and came back to win, then quickly handled their business in the 2nd set sending them to the championship against Dominican.  Unfortunately, they were short of the win against Dominican.  This is a very competitive tournament, and we are so proud of these girls for coming in 2nd Place.  Great job, JV Green!

It was a long, impressive week of Newman volleyball.  The girls are working hard, and it shows on the court.  They keep their fans excited and anxious, but always coming back for more.

This week JV Green and Varsity will play Vandebilt High School at Newman in the Palestra, Monday, September 11th with JV Green at 4:30 and Varsity to follow playing at 5:30.  Then Wednesday, September 13th, JV Green and Varsity will travel to the Northshore to take on Fontainebleau High School, JV Green to play at 4:30 and then Varsity to follow playing at 5:30.

We look forward to seeing everyone cheering in the stands.
