Football
Newman got a huge double overtime win against the 4A Belle Chasse Cardinals at home on Friday night. The Greenies started fast when Jake Randle ripped off a 55 yard first quarter run, setting himself up for a 4 yard TD, which put the Greenies up 7-0. Shortly thereafter, Randle went down with a knee injury and the game turned into a slugfest. Newman’s defense put on another clinic, holding the Cardinals scoreless over 3 quarters while the Newman offense struggled to find its groove. The Greenie D gave up a late 4th quarter touchdown, leaving the game knotted at the end of regulation.
This bunch of gritty Greenies was not done, however, as Senior Middle Linebacker Bobby Kerrigan helped will the team to a thrilling overtime victory. First, Kerrigan came up with a critical interception ending Belle Chasse’s possession and holding them scoreless in the second OT. Then, with Randle injured, Kerrigan came in at Running Back on offense and delivered a key block, allowing Eli Friend to walk into the end zone untouched for the game winning touchdown. With those two game-turning plays, Kerrigan was the easy pick for the Nola.com Player of the Game, and the victory kept the Greenies undefeated at 5-0 on the season. Please cast your vote for Bobby Kerrigan as Nola.com Player of the Week by clicking here!
In addition to Kerrigan’s heroics, Newman’s stout defense got terrific play from Junior DB James Reiss and Junior DT Justin Wells, who each had 8 tackles and a tackle for a loss. Senior two-way star D.J. “Shifty” Thomas added a very important first quarter interception that ended a Cardinals’ drive deep in Newman territory. George Loop caught a TD to tie the game up in the first overtime, and Friend had 65 gutsy yards rushing, in addition to the final TD.
This Friday, Newman faces off against its cross-street rival, the De La Salle Cavaliers, in another tough matchup at Michael Lupin Field. Please come fill the Swamp and cheer on your undefeated Greenies!

Volleyball
It was a great week of volleyball from our Newman Greenies. Tuesday, October 3rd, JV White, JV Green, and Varsity competed against the number one seed in our division, John Curtis. JV White fought through 3 very competitive sets but came up just short in the 3rd. JV Green and Varsity swept the floor, not losing a set!
On Thursday, October 5th, Varsity traveled to the International School of Louisiana and won their match in 3 sets. Way to go Girls!!!
It was an early start on Saturday, October 7th, as Varsity played in a tournament at the Academy of Our Lady in Marrero. The girls were on the bus for 6:40am and the first game was at 8:00am against Walker High School from Walker, LA (Varsity won in 3 sets), then a 10:00am match against Woodlawn High School from Baton Rouge, LA, and a 1:00pm Academy of our Lady from Marrero, LA (won in 3 sets), and then the championship at 2:00pm against a very competitive Slidell High School from Slidell LA (lost in 2). It was an unfortunate finish, but as always, good lessons gained from good competition.
This will be another tough week for our volleyball Greenies as they battle E.D. White from Thibodaux, LA on Tuesday, October 10th and then The Willow School from Uptown New Orleans, LA on Thursday, October 12th. All games will be played at Newman in the Palaestra, starting with JV White at 4:30, JV Green at 5:30, and Varsity to follow. Wear your green and come out and support volleyball this week.
On Friday and Saturday Varsity will travel to Morgan City for the Morgan City High School Tournament.
We look forward to seeing Greenie Fans in the stands!
