Football
Last Friday, the Greenies hosted Homecoming against Riverdale High School on VSN here, and what a Homecoming it was. The Green Machine defense started fast and furious with an interception by Jack “Goose” Falgoust on Riverdale’s first offensive play. Quarterback Eli Friend capitalized quickly with a quick 20-yard touchdown strike to Hendrix Hill.
The next 45 seconds would prove to be historic. First, Riverdale took the Greenie kickoff return 93 yards for a touchdown. Not to be outdone, Jake Randle immediately took the ensuing kickoff return 91 yards to the house bringing the score to 14-7.

As Riverdale tried to put their first offensive drive together, Falgoust intervened with his second interception of the quarter for a pick-six touchdown, bringing the score to 21-7. Friend and the Greenie O were able to get the ball back and scored on a 55-yard strike to George Loop making it 28-7. In a total timespan of only 45 seconds off game clock, the Greenies had dominated the Scottish Rebels by scoring three lightning-fast touchdowns.
The Green Machine D was superb all night and continued to lock down the typically prolific Riverdale offense. The D stymied the Riverdale attacks and allowed only 38 yards of rushing for the entire game. In the second quarter on a tipped pass by Henry Jackson, senior Justin “Time” Wells pulled in an interception, and also logged a sack and two tackles for loss (TFLs). Ian Oboyle added four tackles plus three assists and a TFL, while Corbett Parrino had three tackles, an assist and 2 TFLs. In addition to his two pass deflections, Jackson had four tackles and TFL of his own.
The second quarter featured wide receiver Charles Wilson with two touchdown receptions of 22 and 65 yards from Friend. Running back Jake Randle closed out the offensive display with a 66-yard rush for a touchdown, bringing the score to 49-7 at halftime.
Due to the score differential, the game clock went to running time in the second half as the starters took a seat, and the second and third team got some valuable varsity game experience.
Friend ended his night at half after throwing eight completions on only nine attempts for 242 yards and four touchdowns. Folks, that’s a completion average of 30-yards! Randle ended up with 88 yards on five rushes with one rushing touchdown - average per carry of 17 yards - and the 91-yard kickoff return touchdown, for a total of 179 yards in his one half of play. Loop led the receiving corps with 118 yards on three receptions and a touchdown. Wilson had the longest reception of 65 yards and two touchdowns for the night.
As for the JV football team, it braved a bus ride over Lake Pontchartrain last week and prevailed 20-6 over Pope John Paul II. The offense had several standout performances, led by quarterback Ren Guidry, who started off the scoring on the first drive with a 10-yard scramble for the squad's first score. On the next possession, Thomas Smallpage took a wide receiver screen pass and turned it into a 50-yard yards after catch (YAC) attack. Elliot Rice then mossed several Jaguar defenders for a 30-yard touchdown. Augie Sauska finished up the Newman scoring on the Greenies’ third possession with a 15-yard touchdown reception that ended the first half, and Tanner Robert added the two-point conversion. The Greenies defense was stout throughout the game, forcing the Jaguars into repeated three-and-outs each series until finally giving up a score on the last possession. Linebacker Atticus Lafleur's fingertip, diving interception was a crowd favorite amongst many stellar efforts by the defense.
Next up, be sure to join the Greenies varsity team this Thursday, October 10, at Pan Am Stadium, 194 Zachary Taylor Drive, as they face Martin Luther King High School in district play. Game starts at 7 PM.

Cheerleading
Homecoming Week is one of cheer’s busiest weeks, with school spirit being the name of the game! After a week of dedicated practice, the cheer captains kicked off festivities by escorting Newman's kindergarten court during the morning homecoming assembly. Later, the cheer team energized the entire school with a spirited pep rally. They paid tribute to the senior football players by proudly wearing the boys’ jerseys. At halftime of the game, cheer continued a long standing tradition of flanking and cheering for the Homecoming Court as they made their way across the field. Following the presentation, the team quickly changed into their pink-lined uniforms in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This week, the team is refining their cheers for Thursday's varsity volleyball match at Academy of the Sacred Heart, followed by the football game at Martin Luther King Charter. The squad will be working hard to energize the traveling Greenie Swamp. Go Greenies! | ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Swimming
This past weekend, the varsity swim team competed in a home meet, continuing its strong season with several swimmers achieving state-qualifying times. The team's hard work and dedication were evident as the group secured impressive results across multiple events.
The following swimmers qualified for state in the following events:
Nick Rezza ’25 – 100 Breaststroke & 100 Butterfly
Drew Sonnier ’25 – 500 Freestyle
Vivian Zhou ’26 – 500 Freestyle & 50 Freestyle

Volleyball
Last week, the varsity and JV volleyball squads traveled to Thibodaux for matches against a strong D-III opponent, E.D. White. While the Greenies teams played hard, both suffered losses, including a 17-25, 17-25, and 18-25 defeat for the varsity team. Despite numerous adjustments being made, the Greenies just could not pull off a win against the exceptional Cardinals. Great effort, Greenies!
On Saturday, in the St. Joseph’s JV Tournament both JV teams did an awesome job, with JV Green beating Fontainebleau and East Ascension before eventually losing to St. Thomas More.
Today (10/8), the varsity girls, now 13-6 on the season and 6th out of 52 teams in the statewide D-IV power rankings, will meet Parkview Baptist in the Palaestra building for 5:30pm. JV Green and JV White will open the action with matches against their junior varsity counterparts at 4:30pm. If you can’t make it to the varsity match, tune into the action with your VSN subscription here.
On Thursday (10/10), the Greenies will face off against archrival Academy of Sacred Heart down the street at ASH Rosary Gym. JV Green will lead off at 4:30pm and varsity will follow at 5:30pm. Good Luck to all teams! Go Greenies!
Cross Country
Over the weekend, the cross country team traveled to Baton Rouge’s Highland Road Park to compete in the St. Joseph’s Academy Cross Country Invitational. It was a very competitive field, with dozens of schools participating. The girls varsity placed 12th out of 28 teams and the boys varsity placed 14th out of 44 teams. The girls JV placed 4th out of 9 teams, and boys JV placed 15th out of 27 teams.
The varsity girls were led by CC Eustis, with a 3-mile time of 20:33, followed by Elise Barnett, Avery Summerour, Lillie Dodd, and Eliza Pilant. On the varsity boys’ side, it was Maslen L’Esperance leading the way with a time of 15:53, with Rivers Lelong, Jack Hance, Asher McCoul, Michael Madigan, and Trey Nguyen rounding out the top five. The full results can be found here.
The Greenies are off this weekend, before returning to City Park on October 19 at 7:30 a.m. for the Randy Zell Classic (Senior Day), hosted by Newman. Everyone is invited to come out and support the runners and honor beloved Coach Zell!
