Football
Last Friday, the Greenies moved to 7-0 with a shutout 35-0 win at Country Day. It was another well-rounded, team effort by Newman, and the Green N White Club game ball goes to Coach Nelson Stewart, who notched his 150th career win. In his 18 years as Head Coach at Newman, Coach Stewart has consistently won at least 8 games a season, while sacrificing time with his own family to put Newman’s student athletes first. If you see Coach Stew during Homecoming week, please give him a high-five and tell him “congrats and thanks.” He deserves it, and so does the rest of this terrific coaching staff.
In a departure from our typical column, and following the line of highlighting contributors not always in the spotlight, here are a few other Greenies that deserve recognition as we approach the final two weeks of the regular season:
Jacob Dusansky - Our Senior Placekicker has been outstanding all year. He is 34/35 on extra points, with two field goals, and 36 mission critical touchbacks.
Henry “Big Hen” Jackson - Our Sophomore Defensive Tackle / Nose Guard has been a force in the middle of the defensive front, garnering double teams all season long. Big Hen has really stepped up of late, getting tackles for losses in each of the last two games.
Brett Bordelon - Our Junior Offensive Tackle and LSU commit has been crushing the competition this year. Do yourself a favor and focus on Bordelon the next time the Greenies have the ball. You will usually find him 10-15 yards downfield standing over a pancaked defender.
Felipe “Flip” Suazo - Our Senior Defensive End is a wiry 6’3 athlete that runs a 4.4 40 yard dash and is a menace to opposing offenses. Flip leads the team in tackles and is always in the opposition’s backfield.
As for the Country Day game, Newman’s 35 points came via touchdown runs by Will Loerzel (2), Eli Friend, and Hendrix Hill, along with a pick six by Jack Nesser. Once again, Jacob Dusansky was perfect, making all 5 extra points. Flip and Big Hen led the defense with six tackles apiece, while Junior Defensive Tackle Justin Wells had two tackles for loss and a sack. On Offense, Anthony Jones chipped in for 54 yards on 2 receptions, George Loop added a gratifying 43 yard catch and run against his former school, and Seth Perrilliat had 37 yards rushing.
This Friday, the undefeated Greenies have a Homecoming date with MLK. It is also Senior Night. Please come fill the Swamp!!

Swimming
On October 18th, the Newman Greenies competed against Sacred Heart, Mt. Carmel, McGehee, and St. Martin's at a meet hosted by St. Martin's.
Greenies continue to improve with impressive gains over their seed times. Here are a few highlights:
Gio Arenas dropped over 8 seconds in his 100 Fly;
Anjali Dasa dropped over 6 seconds in her 200 Free;
Nick Rezza dropped almost 9 seconds in his 100 Fly; and
Vivian Zhou dropped a whopping 10 seconds in her 500 Free!
The Greenies look forward to their next meet on October 26th at the St. James Aquatic Center. Then, on October 28, Greenie Swim will be hosting the District Meet/Senior Meet in the Palaestra. It will be the final home meet for Greenie seniors Emma Passler and Gio Arenas.
Volleyball
What a week it has been for Newman Volleyball. It started with a District match on Tuesday, October 17th, with 8th grade, JV Green, and Varsity competing against Newman’s oldest rivalry, Academy of Sacred Heart (ASH). JV Green won their match in an impressive 2 sets and Varsity swept the court in 3 sets, winning their match. This is the 3rd year in a row Newman defeated ASH. It is always a fun, but stressful game. 8th grade competed fiercely on the court but fell short losing their match in 2 sets.
The second District game of the week was Thursday, October 19th. JV Green and Varsity traveled across St. Charles Avenue to De La Salle High School for another successful evening. JV Green won in 2 sets and Varsity in 3 sets. Great wins this week for the Newman Greenies. Congratulations to these amazing girls!
Friday and Saturday (10/20-21) Newman hosted their annual Invitational Tournament (NIT). Teams traveled from Ruston, Assumption, Slidell, Baton Rouge, Barbe, Kenner, and the North Shore to play in this very competitive tournament. Our Varsity Newman Greenies never lost a match and took home the first-place silver platter! Congratulations to our coaches and players for an impressive weekend.
As the volleyball season is winding down, this week will be the last regular season matches. On Monday, October 23rd, JV White will compete in their last match of the season against a very competitive Chalmette High School in the Touhy Gym at 3:45. Come support your volleyball Greenies.
Tuesday, October 24th, we will celebrate our Seniors, Ella Faliveno, Carolyn Rushing, Trecia Stanford, and Chandler Gaudin. The evening begins with JV Green versus The Dunham School, from Baton Rouge, LA at 5:00 and then the Senior festivities will follow at 6:00. Come out and support and celebrate our beloved Seniors. Thursday, October 26th, JV Green and Varsity will travel to Dutchtown High School, Dutchtown, LA, for their last regular season game.
Wear your green and let’s pack the Palaestra one last time. We look forward to seeing you all Tuesday, October 24th for Senior Night!
