Volleyball
The Greenies (19-8) had an action-packed week filled with victories. On Wednesday (10/16), the varsity girls triumphed over the Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy (23-4) in a thrilling four-set match. The Greenies took the first set 25-10, but the Swamp Owls fought back, claiming the second set 25-22. The Greenies regained their momentum and determination, amd despite the Swamp Owl’s strong defense, won the third and fourth sets 25-14 and 25-21, respectively. The JV Greenies also emerged victorious, sweeping the Swamp Owls in two sets. Well done, Greenies!
Over the weekend, the Greenies were busy in the highly competitive and thrilling Newman Invitational Tournament (NIT) in the Palaestra. On Friday (10/18), the varsity girls kicked off the tournament with a big win over Assumption High School, coming back after dropping the first set to the Mustangs to secure victory in three sets (12-25, 25-17, 15-11). However, the evening concluded with a hard-fought loss to Archbishop Chapelle High School, falling in three sets to the Chipmunks (25-20, 20-25, 11-15).
On Saturday, the varsity girls were back in the Palaestra for more volleyball, and started the day with an early morning victory over the Bulldogs of Fontainebleau High School in three sets (25-8, 14-25, 15-13). This match saw contributions from the entire varsity bench.
Advancing to the tournament playoffs, the Greenies faced a tough challenge from powerhouse Hahnville High School, ranked second in the D-1 power rankings and 24-5 on the season. The Greenies rose to the occasion, defeating the Tigers in two sets (25-19, 25-15), avenging a previous sweep from earlier in the season. In the championship game, it was Fontainebleau’s turn for revenge, coming back and beating the Greenies in two tight sets (24-26, 21-25). Despite the loss, the Greenies showed great determination and effort, and overall, the NIT was a huge success with intense competition and high-level volleyball. Congratulations to all the teams involved!
Looking ahead, on Tuesday (10/22), the Greenies, now 19-12 and #3 in the statewide D-IV power ratings, will head to Mandeville to take on the Lakeshore Titans (11-11). JV Green will play Lakeshore at 4pm and varsity will follow at 5pm. Meanwhile, JV White will be playing its last game of the season in the Tuohy Gym against John Curtis Christian School at 4pm. On Wednesday (10/23), the Greenies face off with the Booker T. Washington Lions (18-9) in the Palaestra. JV will begin at 4:30pm, with the varsity girls to follow. To round out the busy week, from Thursday to Saturday (10/24 - 10/26), the JV and varsity teams will compete at the John Curtis Christian School (24-6) district tournament for District 10. Matchups and schedules will be announced soon. Best of luck to the Greenies in the upcoming matches!
Football
On Thursday (10/17), Newman hosted Walter L. Cohen High School at Lupin Field for its second district 10-2A match of the season. The Greenies offense came out fast and furious when running back Jake Randle, at the 11:38 mark of the first quarter, ripped off a 65-yard touchdown run.
The Mean Machine Defense then stuffed the Green Hornets’ offense, forcing a punt attempt that was dropped by the punter and recovered by Archie Casbarian. Quarterback Eli Friend kept the petal to the metal by completing a 10-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Hendrix Hill for the second rapid touchdown in the first quarter.
Back on defense, at the 9:45 mark in the first quarter, senior Brandon Favrot intercepted a Cohen pass and brought it home for a 59-yard touchdown.
After another defensive stop, Friend capped the next drive with a 25-yard rushing touchdown with 5:35 still remaining on the first quarter clock.
The defensive onslaught continued when junior linebacker Corbett “Corvette” Parrino got his own pick six, bringing the first score to 35-0.

Varsity Sports Now, October 17, 2024
In the second quarter, with running time implemented, Hill caught his second 10-yard touchdown pass from Friend. Randle’s 39-yard touchdown run and Favrot’s fumble recovery rounded out the evening for the starters. In the second half, the second team took over under more running time and maintained the 49-0 shutout of the Green Hornets.
The defense had two pick sixes on the night, and shut down the Green Hornets from the jump. The usual suspects of Justin Wells, Henry Jackson, James Reiss, and Henry Cook had a great night of tackles for loss and sacks. The second teamers of AJ Yunusah, Atticus Lafleur, Carter Farnsworth, and Alex Roth all had tackles to defend the shutout in the second half.
For his part, Friend ended up five of seven for 38 yards and two passing touchdowns. Backup quarterback Ren Guidry went three of four for 29 yards in the second half passing. The receiving corps was led by Hill who had two receptions for 20 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Randle led the rushing attack with 109 yards on four runs and two touchdowns.
