Cross Country

On Saturday (10/18), the cross country team hosted the Randy Zell Cross Country Classic at City Park. Coach Zell was a beloved and admired member of the Newman community, serving as a coach and educator for many years, and this race serves as an excellent tradition to honor and preserve his legacy.

The day started out rainy, and the course conditions were not ideal, but the Greenies nevertheless managed some strong finishes. Boys' Varsity came away with an award for their second place finish overall out of 19 teams and Girls' Varsity finished sixth out of 18 teams. Boys' Junior Varsity finished first, and Girls' Junior Varsity finished second. By all accounts, it was an extremely impressive day, capped off with a wonderful celebration of the amazing senior class: Lili Arjmand, Louis Barnett, Markie Batten, Cordell Crawford, Tripp de Laureal, Logan DeGruy, Alex Ducote, Garrison Franks, Rivers Lelong, Robert Milling, Brooke Montano, Lucy Belle Morris, and Ian Provosty. Go Seniors!

In the Boys' Varsity race, seniors Rivers Lelong and Logan DeGruy both finished in the top ten, followed by Asher McCoul, Tripp de Laureal, and Michael Madigan rounding out the team’s top five runners. It's worth noting that this race was the first of the season for both DeGruy and Madigan, who are just returning to competition following injuries. Welcome back, gentlemen!

In the Girls' Varsity race, Sophie Nguyen and Emma Grace Stewart were Newman's top two finishers.

In the Boys' JV race, Cordell Crawford, Frederick Finger, Aaron Washington, and Robert Milling all finished in the top ten.

In the Girls' JV race, Tess Petrone, Madelyn Sonnier, and Mia Pollack all finished in the top ten, with Petrone achieving a new personal record on a particularly challenging day.

On Saturday (10/25), the team will return to City Park to compete in its last regular meet of the season at the Jack Schommer Invitational, starting at 7:40am. Come out and support the Greenies!

Football

On Thursday (10/16) at Pan American Stadium in City Park, the Greenies captured their third consecutive win of the season, this one against district opponent Walter L. Cohen High School, in rapid and convincing fashion by the score of 46-8. This game featured fast and effective work by the offense and stifling defense, with the Greenies building an insurmountable 34-0 lead over the Green Hornets by halftime.

Senior captain quarterback Jake Randle had a banner passing night, completing 12 of 13 passes for 190 yards and four passing touchdowns. Randle added 5 rushes for 34 yards, accounting for 224 total yards and four touchdowns by halftime. Junior quarterback Ren Guidry took over in the second half, connecting on 8 of 13 attempts for 193 yards, including a game-high touchdown reception of 78 yards to sophomore Patrick Dugan for his first varsity touchdown.

The receiving corps was led by senior captain wide receiver George Loop, who alone brought in seven receptions for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Hendrix Hill also contributed with five receptions for 63 yards and a receiving touchdown. Sophomore running back Tanner Robert ran five times for 38 yards and a rushing touchdown and had two receptions for 42 yards and a receiving touchdown, his first two touchdowns of the season.

On special teams, senior Jack Falgoust kicked three PATs, sophomore Patrick Dugan added a PAT of his own, and senior Will Pinkerton handled most of the kickoffs, including some long balls and a touchback. Punting was largely unnecessary, but as quarterback, Randle improvised a surprise punt for 44 yards in his first punt of the season.

The Green Machine Defense stifled the Green Hornet defense from the outset. Other than a single long pass, the seniors of the Green Machine starting defense yielded nothing of substance. Captain noseguard Henry Jackson, defensive end Ian O’Boyle, linebacker Corbett Parrino, and defensive backs Calvin Drake and Jack Falgoust shut down any semblance of an offensive from the home team early and often in the first half.

Sophomore linebacker AJ Yunusah led all tacklers with eight, including three sacks and a tackle for loss (TFL), and junior Benjamin Singer added 3.5 tackles. More TFLs by Henry Jackson, Parrino, Casbarian, and O’Boyle suffocated the running game, and Falgoust logged a huge quarterback sack at a critical time. In the secondary, the defensive backs did their thing, with senior Calvin Drake, junior JB Lawrence and freshman Parker Connolly picking off passes for interceptions, a varsity first for Connolly. Other notable underclassmen achievements included 1.5 tackle performances by sophomores Augie Sauska and Colin Farnsworth and freshman Ryan Mullaly, with freshmen Baldwin Scriber, Miller Haynes, JP Perry, Ford Summerour, and Pierce Purcell all with their first varsity tackles. All in all, it was a great team win from top to bottom.

On Friday, the #5 power-ranked Greenies (3-2) host a second district opponent, the Olympians of Sarah T. Reed Senior High School (1-6), at 7pm at Lupin Field. Come wade into the Greenie Swamp as the home team honors its football and cheerleading seniors for Senior Night and works to extend its winning streak to four in a row.

This Friday is Football Senior Night!

Also mark your calendars for Halloween Eve, Thursday, October 30, for another home matchup at Lupin Field against the rival Cajuns of Metairie Park Country Day School. Go Greenies!

Volleyball

Last Week

It was a challenging but valuable week of competition for the Greenies. Both JV and Varsity teams performed well before an electric home crowd in the Fitzgerald-Skertich Arena, but both ultimately fell to Academy of the Sacred Heart in two hard-fought matches that tested their resilience and composure.

The varsity squad then hosted the annual Newman Invitational Tournament (NIT) over the weekend, which proved to be the most competitive tournament in the state this year. The Greenies went 3–2 overall, highlighted by an impressive win over St. Scholastica Academy (SSA), the No. 2-ranked team in Division II, which entered the match undefeated in the tournament. The event was a tremendous success both on and off the court, showcasing high-level play and strong program pride.

This Week Ahead

Tonight, all three teams, JV White, JV Green, and Varsity, will travel to Parkview Baptist School for matches in Baton Rouge. This evening’s trip will mark the final match of the season for JV White, which has had an excellent year and built a strong foundation for the future.

The varsity team will then compete at home in the District Tournament this weekend, featuring Newman as a favorite along with John Curtis Christian School and Academy of the Sacred Heart. Saturday’s matches promise intense competition and high energy as the Greenies look to make their mark in district play. Fans are encouraged to come out and show their support, as your presence makes a difference when the stakes are high!

On Monday (10/27), Newman will celebrate Senior Night in the Palaestra’s Fitzgerald-Skertich Arena. There is no school that day, making it the perfect opportunity for the entire Newman community to come out and honor our seniors and their contributions to the program. Go Greenies!

Swimming

The swim team has been putting in an incredible week of training as it gears up for the District Championship Meet next Tuesday (10/28), at the St. Martin’s Episcopal School’s Thanksgiving Pool, starting at 3:30pm.

Even without a meet this past weekend, the team’s energy has stayed high as swimmers fine-tune their strokes and sharpen their relay dives. Across the board, swimmers have been showing noticeable improvements in speed and endurance, setting personal goals and pushing each other to reach them.
