This past weekend Newman hosted the annual Randy Zell Cross Country Classic in City Park. It was a great race day for our team as we celebrated our Seniors.

Newman had Twelve Top 10 finishers including Ava Hartman - 1st Place, Avery Summerour – 5th Place , and Jadyn Schwartz – 10th Place for the Varsity Girls. Sam Haber finished 5th Place for Varsity Boys.

The JV Girls finished with Charlotte Estrada (1st Place), Sydney Gallagher, AnneLise Drouin, Belle Wanek, Lyla Gordon, Madelyn Sonnier, Alex Ducote, and Lauren Favrot all in the Top 10.

Both Varsity and JV Girls were Team Champions for the Zell Classic. Boys Varsity received Team Runner-Up.

Congratulations to Sam Haber on winning the MileSplit LA Boys’ Athlete of the Month!  Go Greenies!!

Football

Last Friday evening, Newman got a huge come-from-behind 29-24 win against our cross-street rivals, the De La Salle (DLS) Cavaliers. In a back and forth affair, the Cavaliers took an early 3 point lead after Senior CB D.J. “Shifty” Thomas broke up a DLS pass attempt in the end zone, holding the Cavaliers to a field goal. The Greenies then countered with a huge special teams touchdown by Senior TE Will Loerzel, who blocked a Cavaliers punt (his second of the season) and scooped the ball up in the end zone to put Newman ahead 7-3.

In the second quarter, the physical Cavaliers running game produced two touchdowns, while the Greenies added a running touchdown by do-it-all Quarterback Eli Friend. At half, DLS was up 14-17.

The second half started slowly. The Greenies were forced to punt on the opening possession. The Cavaliers marched down for their third rushing touchdown and took a 14-24 lead. At that point, the halftime adjustments by Coach Stewart’s offense and Coach Noth’s defense finally took hold and the Greenies began to fire on all cylinders. It started with Friend finding Senior WR Peter Loop for a 22 yard TD. Then, the Greenies got a key stop on Defense, forced a DLS punt, and Newman took the lead on a touchdown pass to Senior WR Anthony Jones. The Greenies added two more on the PAT, when Friend mishandled the snap but recovered beautifully, passing to Sophomore Charles Wilson for an important two-point conversion.

The talented Cavaliers did not quit and marched deep into Newman territory to start the 4th quarter. However, the Newman D, powered by leading tacklers James Reiss (10 tackles), Bobby “Big Game” Kerrigan (9 tackles, plus 2 key TFLs) and Jack Nesser (7 tackles), was ready for the challenge. With 9 minutes left in the game, DLS faced third down with two yards to go on Newman’s 9 yard line and Bobby Big Game came through with a tackle in the backfield forcing a 4th down play. Down by 4 points with just over 8 minutes left, the Cavaliers went for it and D.J. “Shifty” Thomas broke up a pass attempt in the end zone (for the second time on the night) as the Cavaliers turned the ball over on downs.

The Newman Offense took the ball on its 10 yard line with just under 8 minutes left and never gave it back. The Greenie Offensive Line, Brett Bordelon, Heid Manning, Griffin Maxwell, Brandon “Big B the Homecoming King” Wilkins and Jack Del Castillo, was dominant and paved the way for a final drive where Friend, Senior RB Seth Perrilliat, and Loerzel pounded out clock-killing rushing yards and first down after first down. The game ended with the score Newman 29 and DLS 24, with Senior Placekicker Jacob Dusansky adding three absolutely critical PATs.

The Greenies are now 6-0 and face rival Country Day in Metairie on Friday.

This is a BIG week for volleyball at Newman as they prepare to play Academy of Sacred Heart (ASH).
