Volleyball
Newman (13-6) had a great week! On Tuesday (10/8), the Greenies defeated Parkview Baptist (13-3) in the Palaestra on VSN here in five sets (26-24, 22-25, 20-25, 25-10, 15-10). The home team beat the Eagles in the last two sets of the match and saw huge contributions from Tatum Young (19 kills, including the match winner), Caroline Beahm (14 kills), LeiLani Reid (6 kills), Kingsland LeBourgeois (15 digs), and Catherine Lapeyre (14 digs).

The junior varsity teams won their matches against the Eagles as well. JV White prevailed in two sets (25-21, 25-20), as did JV Green 25-14, 27-25. Keep up the good work!
Two days later (10/10), the varsity girls faced off against neighborhood arch rival Academy of the Sacred Heart in a huge match at the Rosary Gym on VSN here. It was an amazing game all all the girls contributed to the big win, but it was a block by Young that finished the fourth set and sent the frenzied Newman faithful rushing onto the court.

For their part, the JV girls fought hard but unfortunately could not pull off a win against the Cardinals. With the varsity win (25-18, 24-26, 25-20, 25-17), the Greenies improved their record to 14-6. A shout out here to the Greenies fans and cheerleaders for coming and showing such great support!
Now sporting a 15-6 record, the varsity girls, along with JV Green, will play away tomorrow (10/16) against a strong team at Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy (21-3). JV Green will lead off at 5pm and varsity will follow at 6pm.
This weekend, come out to support the Newman Greenies as they host the prestigious Newman Invitational Tournament (NIT) this weekend in the Palaestra. It will be a fantastic weekend of great volleyball, and there are some great teams coming in to showcase their talents. See you at the Palaestra!
Football
On Thursday (10/10), the football team headed to Pan American Stadium to face Martin Luther King High School for the Greenies’ first competition in District 10-2A and game four of the 2024 campaign.
On the Greenies’ first drive, running back Jake Randle fired off a 41-yard touchdown run, and James Reiss came up with an interception in the Jaguars’ first offensive effort. The Jaguars then caused a turnover and returned the ball to the Newman 4-yard line, but the Green Machine Defense had a huge goal line stand led by Henry Jackson and Henry Cook, causing a turnover on downs and preserving the early shutout.
Quarterback Eli Friend and the offense took over and drove 99 yards for Randle’s second rushing touchdown of the night, bringing the score at the end of the first quarter to 14-0.
In the second quarter, after another stop by the Newman defense, quarterback Eli Friend connected with receiver George Loop on a screen play and Loop took it 85 yards for the touchdown.

Another stop for the defense led to a punt that the Greenies blocked and sophomore Hendrix Hill recovered for a touchdown. Charles Wilson finished the last Greenie drive of the first half with a 5-yard reception from Friend for another touchdown, making it 35-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, under running time, the Jaguars fumbled a punt attempt into their own endzone culminating in a safety for the Greenies. Randle closed out the scoring with a 19-yard receiving touchdown that brought on the reserves, and the Greenies cruised to a 44-0 win.

Offensively, Friend ended the night with eight completions on 11 attempts for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Randle had 93 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 10 attempts, with a long of 41 yards, plus the touchdown receiption. Loop had the longest reception of the night at 85 yards for the touchdown. Other notable receptions were made by the senior Reiss, junior Price Demeyers, and the sophomore Hill, as Friend surgically spread the love.
On the defensive side, the Green Machine shut down the Jaguars, stopping all five attempts to convert on fourth down. Team D was the call of the night with an interception by Reiss, a sack and a tackle for loss by Jackson, a tackle for loss for Jack “Goose” Falgoust, three tackles and three assists by Calvin Drake and six tackles and three assists by Henry Cook. The third quarter reserves on defense were led by Atticus Lafleur and AJ Yunusah with three tackles each to hold the shutout.
Speaking of those reserves, the JV football team last week hosted cross-St. Charles Avenue rival De La Salle at Michael Lupin Field. The game was a back and forth affair, with Newman climbing back into the game several times before ultimately falling 14-29. A stout Cavaliers defense stymied the Greenies’ running game for most of the night. Late in the second half, Newman finally posted a score on a touchdown pass by quarterback Ren Guidry and an amazing finger-tips grab by Emeric “Only TDs” Laborde. How much Stickum was on those gloves!! The defense had a few standout performances, led by linebacker Lafleur with a pick-six, his second interception in as many games. | ![]() |
This Thursday (10/17), the varsity Greenies (4-0) are back home against the Walter L. Cohen Green Hornets for their second district match of the season. Please come and support the team, as it takes another step in its championship march to the Dome! Kickoff is at 7pm. Go Big Green!
