On Friday (10/30), the Greenies feasted on their rival Metairie Park Country Day School at Lupin Field, claiming their seventh victory in a row over the Cajuns, leading 28-0 at halftime and ending with a final score of 42-14. For the second week in a row, the Greenies scored a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. In this week’s version, senior captain offensive guard Henry Jackson pulled and sealed off the defensive end, allowing senior captain quarterback Jake Randle to blaze around the corner untouched for a 52-yard burner down the sideline.

This starter was just an amuse-bouche for the gaudiest stat line of Randle’s career, topping even last year’s epic five-touchdown effort. Though he would end his night early in the fourth quarter with a comfortable lead, Captain Randle threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns on 12 of 18 passing. He also rushed 16 times for 143 yards and two rushing touchdowns. In all, Randle accounted for 480 yards of total offense and six touchdowns.

Also on offense, senior captain receiver George Loop had four catches for 103 yards and a touchdown, including a long of 43 yards. Junior receiver Hendrix Hill caught 7 for 154 yards and two touchdowns including a long of 62 yards. Sophomore running back Tanner Robert topped it off with an 80-yard burner for a touchdown, and senior kicker Jack Falgoust added four PATs.

On the other side of the ball, the Green Machine defense dominated the prolific offensive attack of the Cajuns. The defense shut down Country Day’s attempts in the red zone with four goal line stands, allowing zero scores.

On one of those goal line stands in the second quarter, senior defensive team captain Henry Jackson #64, who had already logged four tackles, three pass hurries and a tackle for loss, sustained a season-ending knee injury while blocking for the offense. A four-year starting nose guard at Newman since the first game of his freshman season, he will cheer on his teammates through the playoffs after a successful surgery, and continue his football career in the fall with Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Go Greenies and Go Big Red!

With a next-man-up esprit de corps, the Green Machine went to work to fill the void and complete the shutdown of the Cajuns. Senior Ian O’Boyle was a man on fire with two sacks and three tackles for loss, including one on a critical fourth-down stop.

Senior Archie Casbarian grabbed another interception along with one sack, one tackle for loss, and seven tackles. Senior Jack “Goose” Falgoust was everywhere, scooping an interception and piling up twelve tackles. Senior Corbett Parrino logged four tackles and shut down the drag routes. Senior cornerback Calvin Drake erased his opposing receivers, making them a non-event for the game.

The juniors and sophomores also stepped up in a big way. Augie Sauska took over at nose guard, applying pass-rush pressure and closing running lanes while Alex Roth lit up the Cajuns for four sacks, four tackles for loss, and eight tackles. AJ Yunusah was everywhere, stifling the Cajuns with nine tackles, one tackle for loss, half a sack, and three passes defended. JB Lawrence added four tackles and a tackle for loss, and Emerick Laborde stole an interception to even further crush the Cajuns’ hopes. In the end, the defense came together and held the previously high-scoring Country Day offense to its lowest point and yardage total of the season.

With the all-around victory, their fifth in a row by 20 points or more, the Greenies improved to 5-2 on the year.

On Friday (11/7) at 7pm, the Greenies travel to South Plaquemines High School (7-1, 3-0 in district) to play a very good Hurricanes team in their last regular season game of the year. With both teams unbeaten in district play, the winner will claim the district championship.

Greenies fans, grab your crew, pack an ice chest and join the convoy to Buras for Friday’s epic match up.

Let’s go Greenies!

Last Week

After a memorable Senior Night win over Berwick High School, the JV Green and Varsity teams closed out the regular season on the road at Dutchtown High School. Facing one of the top programs in the state, Varsity dropped the opening set but answered with focus and intensity. The team rallied to win the next three sets in a row, taking the match 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18) and finishing the regular season on a strong note. That victory helped Newman (24-9) climb to the number two spot in the power rankings, a statement finish that reflects the growth and toughness of this group.
