Swimming

The Newman girls swim team delivered a standout performance at the state championship meet in Sulphur, placing third overall, its highest finish since moving up to Division III three years ago. Despite losing several swimmers to illness just before departure, the Greenies powered through the meet with depth, resilience, and breakthrough swims across the lineup.

Relay Power Sets the Tone

The girls’ 200-yard medley relay team of Lily Dravid, Morgan Breaux, Madelyn Argote, and Adaeze Okoye launched the meet with a massive seven-second drop in the preliminaries, ultimately finishing 5th in the finals. The team continued the relay momentum later with a strong showing in the 200 free relay, where Charlotte Norwood, Amelia Cho, Madelyn Argote, and Vivian Zhou took fourth highlighted by a blistering 26.83 split from Argote, a personal best. To cap the meet, the 400 free relay of Zhou, Norwood, Breaux, and Okoye finished fourth, clinching the Newman girls' overall third-place team finish.

Individual Highlights

  • 200 Freestyle: Norwood placed sixth, while Breaux finished 10th.

  • 200 IM: Zhou secured ninth in a competitive field.

  • 50 Freestyle: Prelims brought drama when Okoye and Argote actually tied against themselves, forcing a swim-off to determine the A-final qualifier. Argote won that race to take the eighth seed and ultimately finished eighth, while Okoye finished 9th. Norwood added points with a 16th-place finish.

  • 100 Butterfly: Argote impressed again, finishing seventh.

  • 100 Freestyle: Okoye made the A final, placing eighth, an exceptional achievement for a newcomer, while Dravid placed 15th.

  • 500 Freestyle: Zhou continued her strong meet with a ninth-place finish, and Cho dropped eight seconds from her time to secure tenth.

  • 100 Backstroke: Dravid earned seventh place.

  • 100 Breaststroke: Breaux rounded out the individual events with an eighth-place finish.

While no boys were able to compete at the state meet due to illnesses, senior swimmer Turner Mazzanti and freshman swimmer Noah Kornman traveled with the team to Sulphur. Their presence was invaluable, helping record splits, time races, and cheer for their fellow swimmers.

Season Wrap Up

In their third place finish, the Newman girls finished just behind second place Parkview Baptist School in a narrow margin that underscores how competitive the Greenies have become in Division III. After back-to-back 7th-place finishes the past two seasons, this year’s leap to third place marks a major milestone for the program. From newcomers stepping into the A finals to veterans dropping significant time from their personal records at state, the team’s success reflects months of dedication, camaraderie, and belief in one another. Despite illnesses and adversity, the Greenies delivered one of their strongest seasons in recent history, setting the stage for even more growth in the future.

All should be proud of how the team performed at state and the effort the swimmers put in throughout the season. Both the girls and the boys swimmers will continue to do great things in upcoming seasons. Go Greenies!

Editors’s Note: Congratulations to senior swimmers Anjali Dasa, Morgan Breaux, Vivian Zhou, and Turner Mazzanti on this their last state meet. Their senior leadership was integral to the team’s success and they served as strong positive role models for the younger swimmers.

Well done!

Football

After a first round bye, the well-rested Greenies hosted Holy Savior Menard Central High School from Alexandria at Lupin Field and dominated from the first play. On the game opening kickoff senior captain George Loop fielded the kick on the eight-yard line and slashed and burned 91 yards untouched for his first of three touchdowns on the night.

After the Green Machine Defense shut down the Eagles’ attempt at an initial drive, senior captain quarterback Jake Randle took command with a masterful offensive drive capped with a four-yard touchdown run. On the second drive, captains Randle and Loop, this time at wide receiver, connected for a long 87-yard touchdown.

After another Green Machine stop and offensive drive, Captain Randle rushed for his second rushing touchdown with a 22-yard run. Yet another successive drive culminated in Captain Loop’s third touchdown of the night on a 47-yard pass from Randle. To cap off the offensive onslaught Randle connected with junior wide receiver Hendrix Hill for a high-point dazzling catch for the sixth and final Greenie touchdown on the night, all in the first half. The Greenies went for two on the PAT and the Randle-Loop connection hit again for the two-pointer, bringing the score at halftime to 42-0 in favor of the Greenies. The Greenies returned from half to running time, and the second team took over the close out the game.

On the night Randle completed 10 of 14 passes for 263 yards and 3 touchdowns, along with 8 runs for 65 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Randle accounted for 325 total yards and 32 total points by pass or run.

NOLA.com, November 21, 2025

In a career night, Loop had five touches in the first half, the big kickoff return and four pass receptions, generating 260 all purpose yards, three touchdowns, and the two-point conversion for 26 points of production. Based on his stellar performance, Loop was nominated for both the NOLA.com and WDSU 6 Sports Player of the week.

All the yards would not have been possible without the unsung offensive line who opened holes and gave the offense time and opportunity to produce. The season-long hard work and team development of senior tackle Corbett Parrino, center Jack Roos, guards Brady Magee and Charles Jackson, tackle Emory Wolfson , and tight end Augie Sauska have culminated in a disciplined offensive line that communicates well and plays together to give the offense opportunities.

Senior kicker Jack Falgoust nailed four PATs and senior kicker Will Pinkerton had four long kickoffs, including three touchbacks.

The Green Machine Defense came to play in the first half and made quite clear they were no “finesse” team. Generally stifling, the starting defense bent but never broke, even when the Eagles got some forward motion on offense. Defensive highlights included TFLs from seniors Archie Casbarian and Calvin Drake, an interception by sophomore AJ Yunusah, and a fumble recovery by junior Alex Roth.

Ten players logged at least four tackles namely seniors Jack Falgoust, Ian O’Boyle, Corbett Parrino, Calvin Drake, and Archie Casbarian, plus AJ Yunusah, Ben Singer, Augie Sauska, and Jayce Irving. The second team defense got in on the action with tackles logged by seven different players, namely Miller Haynes, Colin Farnsworth, Emeric Laborde, Ford Summerour, Hunter Conway, Hunter Johnson, and Charles Feirn. It was a great defensive night for a true team defense.

With the playoff victory, the Greenies have now reached the LHSAA quarterfinals consecutively for the past 12 years. The Greenies (7-2) and have scored at least 40 points a game in their seven wins.

On Friday (11/18), Newman (#4) will host Baton Rouge’s The Dunham School (#5) at Lupin Field at 7pm in the Division III Select Quarterfinals. Dunham features a 6’5, 215 pound 5-star nationwide recruit at quarterback with offers from the likes of Alabama, Penn State, Georgia, and LSU. His favorite target is a 6’5, 195-pound wide receiver who has committed to the University of South Alabama.

The Tigers will provide an exciting test for the Greenies, whose bend-don’t- break defense will go up against a pedal-to-the-metal offense. The Tigers’ only loss this year was back in September to St Charles Catholic High School, a team that also handed a loss to the Greenies. The winner of this game will face either Lafayette Christian Academy (#1) (on the road) or Catholic High School, New Iberia (#9) (at home) in the semi-finals.

The Dunham School fans travel strong, so the Greenies need your support! There is no substitute for Friday Night Lights at Lupin with full stands, a rocking Greenie Band, and a rollicking kickoff with the Greenie Swamp. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s go out and enjoy the live atmosphere and cheer on what could be the first team in Newman history to play for a championship in the Superdome. Go Greenies!

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team started the season this past week and had a great week of games. The team is not yet in full force, with a number of players still recovering from some pre-season injuries. Fortunately, the remaining members of team made a strong showing.

The team battled Pearl River High School in the home opener. The first half of the game was close, but the visitors pulled ahead at the end, 55-48.

Piper Christian scored 12 points, Katherine Aucoin scored 11 points, Amari Jones scored ten points, and points were also scored by Sophia Mills, Jordin Daniels, and Breigha Leal. Christian and Aucoin each made two three-pointers.

Only two days later, the team bounced back with an exciting road win over Northlake Christian School, 39-38: the team’s first one-point win in three years! In that game, Piper Christian scored 13 points, Katherine Aucoin scored 12 points, Amari Jones scored seven points, and Sophia Mills and Jordin Daneils also made baskets. Aucoin had a particularly impressive showing with three three-pointers.

The team heads back on the road this week, competing in the The Dunham School Tournament in Baton Rouge. Good luck Greenies!

Boys Soccer

Last week, the boys varsity soccer team kicked off its campaign to repeat as the Division IV state champion, albeit without 11 seniors, including nine starters, from last year’s undefeated team. The boys started off the season very well with two strong victories against two district opponents from Jefferson Parish: Fisher Middle/High School and Jefferson RISE Charter School.

In Tuesday’s home match against Fisher, the boys dominated from start to finish, scoring 11 goals in a shutout against the Gators that ended early at halftime due to the maximum goal differential rule. Reed Sanford led the attack with five goals and Veer Walia netted three. Hamilton Houghton added a nice goal and two assists, Jake Isenberg scored on a free kick and had three assists, and Weston Beevers scored on a penalty kick.

On Wednesday, the boys headed to the marshy Estelle Playground in Marrero for a road match against the Blazers, a tougher side that put up a better fight but still fell to the Greenies, 6-0. Sanford led the team again, with two goals, and the other contributors on offense were Joe Morris (one goal, one assist), Walia (one goal, one assist), Daniel Taylor (one goal), Aiden Berner (one goal), and Beevers (one assist). In goal, senior Henry Houghton had a nice save to preserve the second consecutive shutout of the young season.

The boys will now head back to the training pitch to fine tune and prepare for some quality opponents in the first week of December: Archbishop Shaw High School (home), Pope John Paul II High School (away), and Dutchtown High School (home).

Newman Greenies Battle Through Back-to-Back Home Performances, Led by Freshman Scoring Phenom

The boys basketball team showcased grit, talent, and early-season identity during its two-game home stretch this week, a sequence that featured a decisive opening win and a dramatic overtime thriller that slipped away in the closing moments. Through it all, one thing has become clear: this year’s Greenies have firepower, balance, and a hunger to keep growing

Freshman Sly Johnson Leading the Charge

Newman’s offense has been fueled by one of the biggest stories in the city: freshman guard Sly Johnson, who is currently leading the team in scoring with an impressive 21.5 points per game. Johnson’s poise, shot-making, and ability to score at all three levels have quickly made him one of the most exciting young players in the region.

Right behind him is the steady play of Carter Farnsworth, averaging 14 points, followed by Aaron Washington Jr. contributing 13 points per game, and Pierce Cunningham adding 8 points. Together, this core has given Newman a balanced, explosive attack that has kept them competitive in every contest so far.

A Strong Start: Win Over NOMMA

In their first game of the home stand, the Greenies took care of business with a strong win over New Orleans Military & Maritime Academy. Newman controlled the tempo early, using defensive pressure to force turnovers and converting in transition. Johnson’s scoring set the tone, Farnsworth knocked down key perimeter shots, and the supporting cast delivered timely plays to secure the victory over the Bulldogs. The win showcased exactly what Newman basketball is built on: teamwork, conditioning, and a willingness to push the pace.

A Heartbreaker: Overtime Loss to McMain

The second game brought a battle against Eleanor McMain Secondary School, a matchup that turned into a back-and-forth thriller from start to finish. Despite the Greenies’ strong effort and multiple chances to secure the win in overtime, the Mustangs made just a few more plays down the stretch, handing Newman a tough loss.

Even in defeat, the Greenies showed resilience and maturity. Their ability to fight through runs, respond to pressure, and execute late in the game proved that this young team is learning fast. The overtime loss will serve as a valuable lesson, especially knowing they had opportunities to close it out.

Eyes Forward: Holy Cross Tournament Up Next

The season doesn’t slow down. Newman immediately turns its focus to a new challenge: the Holy Cross High School Basketball Tournament. The Greenies’ played the host last night, with full coverage of that game coming in next week’s report. They’ll also face Benjamin Franklin High School and St. Thomas Aquinas High School. With their offensive leaders clicking and the team continuing to grow together, this upcoming stretch offers another chance for the Greenies to sharpen their identity and build momentum.

Continuing the Work

Despite the mixed results in their home stand, the message around the program is clear: keep improving, stay together, and trust the process. With a standout freshman leading the scoring, strong contributions from Farnsworth, Washington Jr., and Cunningham, and a competitive edge that showed in overtime, Newman is positioned to make noise as the season progresses. The Greenies are hungry, focused, and ready for the challenges ahead!

Girls Soccer

The Greenies opened their varsity girls’ soccer season with an emphatic 8–0 win over Sarah T. Reed High School last night. The team came out strong and dominated possession early, setting the tone with an opening goal from Alyse Dulitz. Scoring continued against the Olympians steadily throughout the match with goals from Brooke Montaño, assisted by Sara Córdova, another from Dulitz off a setup by Jane Summerour, and additional finishes by Maggie Schonberg, Ann Schonberg, and Amelia Claverie. A standout moment came when CC Loerzel delivered a perfect cross to Cici Burns for a clean finish, one of the night’s sharpest attacking sequences. With a confident start to the season, the girls capped the match with a final goal by Loerzel herself, securing the mercy-rule finish.

The Greenies now look ahead to their home matchup against St. Michael the Archangel High School tonight at 7pm. on Lupin Field. The team will then hit the road next week for a challenging stretch, traveling to Fountainebleau High School in Mandeville on Tuesday before a trip to Lafayette, where they’ll face Loyola College Prep on Friday night and Lafayette High School on Saturday morning.
