Girl Basketball
The Newman Girls Varsity started the season last week with a nail biter against Pearl River. The game was televised on VSN.
The game led off with a tremendous offensive scoring display by Anaya Yunusah, who had 11 of her team-high 20 points in the 1st quarter. But Pearl River’s pesky defense kept the game close. The Greenies went into halftime down 26-23. But a strategic halftime plan, led by Coach Tracy Blackerby, brought the Greenies back. The Greenies were led by Sanaa Bean, who had 10 of her 15 in the 3rd quarter. Great defense by Maddie Hebert and Talia Parnes helped neutralize the Pearl River attack. Madison Williams had two key steals and turned them into four fastbreak points. Jessica Taranto hit a 3-pointer and hit the final free throw to ice the game, which ended with a Newman win, 54-50.
The second game of the week, against West Jefferson, was a very different game. The Newman Girls dominated it. The scoring was led by Anaya Yunusah with 12 and Sanaa Beanwith a team-high 17. Talia Parnes had multiple assists and scored 5 points. Camille McCann hit a long 3-pointer to add to the lead. The halftime score was 37-0. The coaches decided to pull the starters and allow the rest of the team to get valuable minutes. Kasia Wells and Maggie Richardson orchestrated the offense, and center Stella Joyce scored on a sweet move in the paint. Joyce also had many rebounds. The Greenies cruised to an easy victory, winning 47-16.
The next game is Tuesday, November 28th, at home versus Hahnville at 6 pm. We also look forward to our first NIT on Thursday, November 30th, through Saturday, December 2nd. We hope you will join us.
Football
Last Friday, the Greenies played lights out in all phases on the way to a resounding 45-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. The Greenie offense was led by Quarterback Eli Friend, who had his most complete performance of the year, passing for over 200 yards with 3 touchdowns and running for +100 yards and another score. Running Back Jake Randle also had +100 yards rushing and a score, and the dynamic Senior WR duo of Anthony Jones and Peter Loop combined for 150 yards receiving and 3 TDs.
Two-way star D.J. Thomas chipped in with 50 receiving yards and an interception. Felipe Suazo, Bobby Kerrigan, James Reiss and Isaiah Grant led the defense in tackles, while Reiss and Paolo Guillen both recovered fumbles.
Senior Placekicker Jacob Dusansky, who has had a remarkable season and just picked up an offer from Centenary College (Congrats Jacob!), had a 34 yard field goal plus 6 touchbacks, and was 6-6 on PATs.
With the win, Newman moves on to the Quarterfinals, and will host the Episcopal Knights from Baton Rouge, Louisiana at home on Friday. Episcopal will be coming in hot, after an upset 38-14 victory over Bunkie last Friday. Please fill the Swamp and make some noise for what may be the last home game of the year.
And remember, winter is coming!!
Tickets to the quarterfinal playoff game against Episcopal must be purchased through Newman’s digital box office. All attendees (students, faculty, administration, and Green N White Club members) must buy tickets using this link:

Boys Soccer
The Newman soccer boys got off to a strong start on Tuesday night with an 8-0 home win in their season opener against district opponent Thomas Jefferson.
An exciting header into the back of the net as time expired in the first half by sophomore striker Daniel Taylor gave the Greenies the maximum goal differential and an early match termination for the boys’ first win of the season!
Left winger Rylan Claverie (3 goals), center midfielder George Villere (2 goals), and striker Boyce Batten (2 goals and 2 assists) also scored for the Green and White.
On Saturday, the boys duplicated their 8-0 effort against another district opponent, Sarah T. Reed High School. Rylan Claverie paced the Greenies with four scores against the Olympians, including a walk-off header that ended the game early midway through the second half, and two assists. Captain Boyce Batten added a goal and dished out five assists, and junior midfielders Paul Richard, Amar Walia, and George Villere also found the back of the net.
With a short break this week from match play, the boys’ next game is scheduled for Tuesday, November 28, at 5pm, at home, against another district opponent, Fisher High School.
Girls Soccer
The Newman soccer girls (1-0) opened the season last week with a decisive 7-0 win against district opponent Thomas Jefferson (1-1). Though the Jaguars had easily won their first game against a D-1 opponent, they were no match for the Greenies at Michael Lupin Field. Captain Hannah Plaisance and Catherine Lapeyre had two goals apiece, and Isabelle Wanek got on the score sheet as well.
With many of the starters resting in the second half, the reserves continued to control the game. Sophomore birthday girl Lily Elichman scored two goals on her special day, with the second strike coming after weaving her way through a pair of defenders on a 50-yard solo jaunt from midfield.
The win marked the sixth win in a row for the girls dating back to last season’s state championship run. On Tuesday, the Greenies will host Vandebilt Catholic, with kickoff scheduled for 7pm.
