After kickoff, the Green Machine set the tone early with a three and out defensive series to start the game. In their first offensive series, quarterback Eli Friend led the Greenies offense with a clutch run on a fourth down conversion. On the next play, Friend threw a 29-yard touchdown strike to James Reiss at the 7:58 minute mark in the first quarter.

The Hurricanes mounted a promising drive that was snuffed out by senior Alex Dulitz, who came up with an interception as the first quarter came to a close. After some back and forth through the second quarter, Friend found Charles Wilson for a 56-yard receiving touchdown with 1:33 left in the half. The Hurricanes mounted a quick drive that led to a field goal attempt at the close of the first half that was no good. At half, the Greenies led 14-0.
The Greenies had a rough third quarter plagued with a turnover and an invigorated Hurricane offense that was able to score two touchdowns in the third quarter. Then the tide started to turn. The Hurricanes missed their second PAT attempt of the game, leaving the score at 14-13 at the end of a challenging third quarter.
On the heels of the missed PAT, the Greenie offense responded with an important drive finished off by last week’s Fox 8 Prep Football Player of the Week, Jake Randle, who had the 6-yard rush for a touchdown. With an important successful PAT by Jack “Goose” Falgoust the Greenies led 21-13 with 9:31 remaining in the game.
The Green Machine Defense did some responding of their own when Archie Casbarian caused a fumble that was recovered by Corbett “Corvette” Parrino on the Hurricane 21. A stout Hurricane defense held the Greenies in check until Falgoust drilled his 30-yard field goal attempt to bring the score to 24-13.
Showing the most fight of any opponent yet this season, the Hurricane mounted a fourth quarter drive for a touchdown and successful 2-point conversion to cut the lead to 24-21. The Greenies were forced to punt it back to them as the clock continued to tick down in the fourth quarter. Again the competitive Hurricanes put together a drive to attempt to take the lead for the district championship. With 34 seconds remaining, however, Henry Cook marshalled an interception to capture the district championship and dash any Hurricane hopes of last-second heroics.

Friend ended the night 9 of 17 passing for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Charles Wilson led in receiving with 81 yards, including a long of 56 yards and a touchdown, and Reiss caught two passes for 41 yards and a touchdown. Randle rushed 14 times for 61 yards and a touchdown, and Friend added 8 rushes for 88 yards. Falgoust kicked touchbacks all night on kickoffs and hit all his PATs and a field goal for what would be the difference.
The Green Machine Defense was led by Parrino, who tallied five tackles with four assists and a fumble recovery, and Henry Cook, who counted three solo and four assist tackles, plus the game ending interception for the win. Reiss, Justin Wells, and Brett Bordelon each had tackles for loss (TFLs), and Wells notched an important and timely quarterback sack.
With the 24-21 win in a competitive championship and playoff atmosphere, the Greenies claimed the 10-2A District Championship. The Greenies ended the regular season undefeated (8-0) and are ranked #2 in the Division III Select playoff bracket.

It was clear they were giving it their all, even though it was just a scrimmage. The team’s chemistry and determination could make them fun to watch all season.
The official season will tip-off next Tuesday (11/19) on the road against Patterson High School, but first the boys will compete on Saturday (11/16) in the McDonogh 35 boys basketball jamboree. Game times are to be determined, and tickets can be purchased here. Go Greenies!
