The varsity team started out strong in their postseason run, defeating Pine Junior/Senior High School and Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies in the bi-district and regional rounds of the playoffs, both in straight sets. The regional round win over the Jaguars marked the final home match for our seniors, making the night especially meaningful.

Captains Jesse Lambert and Caroline Beahm, who have been fixtures on the varsity court since their freshman year, led with the same poise and intensity that have defined their careers. Their leadership will be vital in the push toward another title.

Football

On Friday (11/7), the Greenies loaded the buses for a long drive south to Empire to face South Plaquemines High School for final regular season game of the season that would decide the District 10-2A Championship. In a hard-fought game broadcast on YouTube here, the Greenies dominated the Hurricanes 28-0, clinching their second consecutive District 10-2A Championship title.

Senior captain quarterback and New Orleans Area Prep Football Player of the Week frontrunner Jake Randle had another stellar night, completing 15 of 21 passes for 233 yards and three passing touchdowns. He added 12 rushes for 53 yards and a rushing touchdown. Randle’s total offensive output for the district championship night came to 286 yards and four touchdowns by pass or run.

Senior Collier Villere led the receiving corps with three catches for 64 yards and caught the game’s first touchdown.

WGNO’s Friday Night Football

Junior receiver Hendrix Hill got on the board next with a beautiful 48-yard receiving touchdown. Senior captain receiver George Loop caught four for 51 yards to keep the first down chains moving and grind down the field. Sophomore Tanner Robert rushed three times for 21 yards and in the second quarter caught a 22-yard pass from Randle for the third score of the night. Randle would add the final score of the night in the third quarter with a 2-yard goal line run, capping the title fight with 28 points for the night. Senior kicker Jack Falgoust was a perfect 4 for 4 on PATs.

The Green Machine Defense took another important step forward by playing all-hands-on-deck and bend-but-don’t-break team defense, holding the Hurricanes scoreless all game, the first time they had been shut out at home in over ten years. The defense prevented big plays and came up with important interceptions by AJ Yunusah and Ben Singer.

WGNO’s Friday Night Football

Senior Falgoust led the defensive efforts with seven solo tackles, five assists, a sack and two tackles for loss (TFLs). Senior Archie Casbarian continued his dominance with five solos, two assists, and a TFL. Senior Ian O’Boyle was everywhere and ended with five solos and 4 assists. Senior Corbett Parrino logged seven tackles, and senior cornerback Calvin Drake put the Hurricane receivers on lock down all night.

Junior Alex Roth continued his run with a sack and a TFL with several solos and assists. In his first start at nose guard, replacing injured senior captain Henry Jackson, Auggie Sauska did a great job clogging running lanes, providing great push on the Hurricane quarterback, and chalking up four tackles on the night. Nick Gardner logged three assists and Emerick Laborde brought down two. With the 28-0 final score, the shutout district title victory was the perfect culmination of the regular season for this defense at the right time going into the playoffs.

The Greenies’ fifth win in a row, all by more than 20 points, settled their playoff seed at #4 in the Division III Select playoff bracket here and earned them a first bye and home field advantage for at least the next two rounds. On Friday, November 20, the Greenies will face the winner of Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies (#20) and Holy Savior Menard Central High School (#13). Mark your calendar for Friday, November 20 at Lupin Field for the next step of this team’s quest to take the state title.

Swimming

On Thursday (11/6), Newman hosted a Last Chance Meet to give swimmers the opportunity to see their progress heading into state and add new qualifying times. Overall, the meet was a success with some exciting highlights:

  • Zoila Linares became a first-time state qualifier, hitting the cut in the 200 freestyle.

  • Frances Mann qualified in the 500 freestyle, earning a personal record in the process.

  • Standout Amelia Cho also qualified in the 500 freestyle, marking an impressive performance.

  • Adaeze Okoye continued her strong season by qualifying in the 100 freestyle, adding to her growing list of accomplishments.

  • Freshman Millie Eisner achieved a personal best in the 100 breaststroke, showing steady improvement.

  • Freshman Noah Korman posted a best time in the 100 backstroke, rounding out a strong day of swims for Newman.

This past weekend, the swim team traveled to Mandeville to compete in the New Orleans Metro Championship Meet held at Franco’s Aquatic Center. Metro is an open invitational featuring schools from all four divisions competing together, making it the most competitive meet of the season. The qualifying standards for Metro are even faster than those for the Division III State Meet, so simply earning a spot is an impressive accomplishment. Placing in the top 16 means beating swimmers not just from Newman’s division, but from all four divisions in the New Orleans area.

This year, Newman brought six swimmers to Metro, the team’s largest group since 2022, and all six were girls. Senior captains Morgan Breaux and Vivian Zhou returned for their third appearance at the meet, providing leadership and experience. Despite battling illness, Zhou posted strong times in both the 200 IM and 100 freestyle. Breaux earned a spot in the B Final of the 100 breaststroke for the second year in a row, improving her prelim time and finishing 14th overall, her most competitive swim of the season.

Adaeze Okoye made her Metro debut, earning an alternate spot in the 50 freestyle, one of the most competitive events of the meet. Competing against some of the fastest high school swimmers in the New Orleans area, Okoye also turned in an impressive performance in the 100 breaststroke.

Junior Charlotte Norwood raced in the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle, narrowly missing the B final in the 200 free. Junior Lily Dravid excelled in the 100 backstroke, winning her heat and dropping two seconds from her previous best, an encouraging sign heading into the state meet. Junior Madelyn Argote also had a strong showing in the 100 butterfly, continuing her steady season progress.

Newman’s relay teams also delivered standout performances. The 200 freestyle relay (Okoye, Dravid, Norwood, Zhou) finished 10th in prelims, securing a spot in the B final. The 400 freestyle relay (Okoye, Breaux, Norwood, Zhou) placed 7th in prelims, qualifying for the A final.

On Day Two, the girls returned ready to compete. The 200 freestyle relay held their 10th-place seed in a competitive field where many teams dropped time. Breaux followed with her B final in the 100 breaststroke, improving her prelim swim to finish 14th overall. The meet concluded with the 400 freestyle relay, where the girls dropped five seconds from their prelim time to place 7th overall, coming within reach of 6th place. The relay is already several seconds faster than last year’s time, an exciting sign for state competition ahead.

With only six swimmers, Newman finished 13th overall, an impressive result at the toughest meet of the year. The team’s performances at Metro demonstrate both individual growth and strong team depth heading into the final stretch of the season. With continued time drops, new state qualifiers, and strong performances, the Greenies are carrying powerful momentum into the upcoming Division III State Championships held in Sulphur on November 18th and 19th.
