Tennis
In Monroe last week, the girls tennis team won the Division III state championship, its fifth championship in program history. Congratulations to captain Gwendolyn Gray and Francie Casbarian for winning the doubles state championship over a doubles pair from Academy of Our Lady High School in the title match. | ![]() Instagram: @newmanvarsitytennis |
In defeating Academy of the Sacred Heart New Orleans and Episcopal School of Baton Rouge in the team points competition, the girls were also lead by Ariana Bazan, who made it to the semi-finals. Macy Montgomery reached the quarterfinals, as did the doubles teams of Molly Gorman and Belle Wanek, and Lilly Pollack and Catherine Pietras.
![]() Instagram: @newmanvarsitytennis | Congratulations also to the boys team, which took home Division III state runner-up honors. Singles player Arjun Walvekar reached the semifinals, while the doubles teams of seniors Amar Walia and Fulton Price reached the quarterfinals, as did duos Veer Walia and Evan Sosa and Paul Richard and Jai Bansal. Lacrosse
It was a historic weekend for Newman Lacrosse, which went further than they have ever gone before. On Friday night (5/2), the Greenies won a hard fought semi-final match in a thrilling 12-9 victory over powerhouse Catholic High School on Varsity Sports Now here. The team led from the start, with senior Max Kukuy tallying five goals, two assists and five ground ball recoveries. Fellow seniors Eli Friend added two goals, two assists and eight ground ball recoveries, and William Mahfouz had two goals, three assists and three ground ball recoveries. The underclassman got in on the act with Price DeMeyers’ three goals and two assists.
The defense was the key to the game. Patrick Landry must have cloned himself as he seemed to be in on every play. James Ryan added massive support and Emeric Laborde protected the net with 6 saves. Friend and Vos Finkelstein added to the stellar play with six and seven face-off wins respectively. The victory sent the Greenies to Newman’s first ever state championship final.

Varsity Sports Now, May 2, 2025
The championship final on a sunny Sunday afternoon (5/4) in Baton Rouge against Jesuit High School of New Orleans on VSN here lived up to the hype and then some. The Blue Jays were the clear favorites, returning as two-time defending state champions and having won three out of the last four state championships.
![]() Instagram: @flicksonsy | The Greenies were focused and looking to take the win as a huge underdog. A multitude of Green N White Club supporters, administrators and teachers made the trek. The tournament hosts from Catholic High decorated the locker room for Newman, dressed in green to take tickets, and left the team inspirational “Believe”, “Finish Strong” and “Go Greenies” signs. Ascension Catholic students-turned Greenie supporters came to both matches, this time with player names and numbers painted in green on their chests. A busload of students also arrived to support their team, culminating in an amazing show of community support that was appreciated by all of the players and their families. |
As shown by the Varsity Sports Now highlights here, the team played tough from start to finish. It was a very physical game that went back and forth, with neither team ever leading by more than two goals. It was 2-1 Blue Jays after one, then 3-2 Newman at the half, and a 7-7 tie going into the 4th. Ultimately, Jesuit prevailed 10-9 and earned its third straight state title. Congratulations to the Blue Jays. | ![]() Instagram: @flicksonsy |
![]() Instagram: @flicksonsy | The Greenies were led in scoring by Price DeMeyers with four goals, followed by William Mahfouz with three. Eli Friend added four assists and Max Kukuy managed two goals despite being a strong focal point for the Blue Jays defenders, ending his senior campaign as Newman’s career scoring leader. The entire team played hard and got as physical as Jesuit did, showing Greenie pride throughout. |
Giving all they had and leaving it all on the field, it was a great show of talent, desire and pure sportsmanship from all of the players, with everyone falling in love with the team. The parents could not be more proud.

Softball
The softball team wrapped up a remarkable season, accomplishing several key goals set way back in January despite a demanding schedule filled with some of the top teams in the state. The team finished the regular season with a strong 13-7 record, went undefeated in district play, and captured the 2A-10 District Championship by outscoring district opponents 88-6. A major milestone was also achieved when the Greenies hosted, and won, their first playoff game in over 20 years.
Though the season ended sooner than hoped, the team advanced in the playoffs before falling to D’Arbonne Woods Charter School, the eventual state champion runner-up, in North Monroe. Still, it was a season defined by growth, grit, and achievement.
Playoff Game #1: Dulitz Drives in Four as Newman Dominates Country Day, 24-4, in Historic Playoff Win!
![]() Instagram: @newmansoftball | In the first playoff game on Varsity Sports Now here, Alyse Dulitz delivered a standout performance at The Fly, driving in four runs on two hits to lead the Greenies to a commanding 24-4 playoff victory over Metairie Park Country Day School. The playoff win over the Cajuns was especially meaningful for the Greenies, an electric moment for the program and its fans. Newman made the most of the opportunity, combining an explosive offense with sharp pitching to advance to the next round of the postseason. |
Dulitz sparked the scoring surge with a three-run triple and an RBI single, both during a 15-run second inning that broke the game wide open. Newman’s offensive eruption featured contributions from throughout the lineup, including an RBI double by Felicity Drake, RBI singles from Maryn Huber, Maddox Bazley, and Dulitz, and a series of run-scoring walks and hit-by-pitches. In all, 19 batters came to the plate in the inning.
Though Country Day struck first in the opening frame, Newman quickly flipped the script, plating nine runs in the bottom of the first on just one hit, capitalizing on free passes and a two-run fielder’s choice by Brett Beasley to take a 9-2 lead.
Huber earned the win in the circle, striking out seven over three innings while allowing just five hits and four runs (three earned). Dulitz and Madison Able each tallied two hits for the Greenies, with Able also contributing two RBIs. Caroline Kenter led the team with three walks, part of a patient approach that netted 14 total free passes. On the basepaths, Newman was relentless, stealing 13 bases, including multiple swipes by Huber, Able, Bazley, and Hollier Sutherlin.
Playoff Game #2: Second Ranked D'Arbonne Woods Defeats Newman in Second Round of Playoffs

The #2-ranked D'Arbonne Woods Charter School erupted for seven runs in the third inning to overpower the Greenies in their second playoff game, earning a 10-0 win. The game broke open in the third as the Timberwolves capitalized on timely hitting and a couple of defensive miscues.
With the loss, the Greenies’ season came to a close, while D'Arbonne Woods ended up advancing to the state championship finals and finishing their season as the eventual state champion runner up.

Newman Softball bids a heartfelt farewell to its three seniors: Brett Beasley, Catherine Fitzpatrick, and Sydney Gallagher. These student-athletes have been foundational to the success of the squad and instrumental in reviving varsity softball following a 15-year hiatus. While it’s bittersweet to see their time in a Greenies uniform come to a close, the entire Newman community is proud of everything these seniors have accomplished. Their impact on the program will be felt for years to come. | ![]() |

Track and Field
LHSAA 2A - Region 3 Championship Meet - April 29
This past week, our Greenies took on stage two of the journey to States. The barricade to Baton Rouge lies north, over the lake. The only way to reach the final stage, at Louisiana State University, is to pass through the gates of Covington. (For argument’s sake, let’s just say I-10 was closed.)
The Regional 3 Championship meet is the determinant for who gets to compete at the State Championship. In this meet, the top six athletes in an event score points, and the top three athletes move on. As a result of hard work, intense focus, and pure guts, Newman had 21 qualifying marks and times across 17 different events, and, ultimately, is sending 22 athletes to the state championship meet. Let’s dive into just some of the many outstanding performances our athletes put on below.
Defending the Belt
Jada Recasner, the District Meet MVP, gracefully hopped, skipped, and jumped her way to a gold medal with ease in the triple jump, securing the title of Regional Champion. She looks beyond, to states, to defend her State Champion title in the triple jump from this year’s indoor season. Great job, and best of luck in Baton Rouge! | ![]() Instagram: @newmanathleticsphotos |
Slaying the Beast
In the Boys 800m, breaking two minutes is a monstrous task that all runners view as an admirable checkpoint. Rivers LeLong has been battling this beast all season long, knocking on the door of victory many times, and the beast is no longer. LeLong came through his first lap in 56 seconds, and that’s when it became clear he came to this fight with a furrowed brow. He finished his race in 1:59.26, earning a silver medal as a token of bravery. However, his journey is not over. Many tales have told of the secret powers that lie beyond the two-minute mark, and 800m times tend to see a burst of energy after overcoming this checkpoint. He will look to improve on his new PR at LSU.
Very Valuable Indeed
Logan DeGruy and Dylan Kolenovsky have displayed time and time again their abilities to stack up points in multiple events. These two were crowned Boys Track MVP and Overall MVP, respectively, two weeks ago at districts. They’ve done it again! | ![]() Instagram: @newmanathleticsphotos |
DeGruy won two golds and a silver medal on the track in the 1600m, 3200m, and 4x800m relay at Regionals, and Kolenovsky won two golds and a bronze medal in discus, shot put, and javelin. Congrats to these MVPs for their performances and their chances to compete in three events at the state championship.
Death, Taxes, and the 4x400m Relay
It always comes down to it, a sure thing. Regionals was no different. Perfectly balanced as all things should be, the team scores were subject to defining changes based on the points awarded in the 4x400m. Going into the final event, the boys team was in third place, three points behind Slaughter Community Charter School, and the girls team was also in three place, three points behind Northlake Christian School. Points are awarded from first place to six place as follows: 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 1.
The girls team was seeded second overall in the relay, and to win the Team Runner-up award, they needed to score four more points than Northlake Christian. When it came down to it, the girls understood the assignment. Not only did they secure a silver medal for eight points, they ran a PR by a whole eight seconds, with Avery Summerour, CC Eustis, Brooke Montano, and Eloise Puckett all running or tying their fastest splits all season. The Wolverines couldn’t keep up, taking fifth in the relay (two points) and relinquishing the Team Runner-up title to our girls. Congratulations to our Girls Regional Meet Runner-ups!
The boys team, which was also three points behind Slaughter, was seeded fifth in the event, and less than a half second ahead of the sixth and seventh seeds. Fifth place would only earn the boys two points, and even if the Knights didn’t place, that wouldn’t be enough. The Greenies needed more. | ![]() |
![]() | The relay team of Jack Hance, Nick Coffin, Cyrus Arjmand, and Rivers LeLong knew it was going to be a guts race. The relay team ran a six second PR, all running or tying their fastest splits of the season, and here’s the kicker. Arjmand, the third leg, was handed off the baton in fifth place, perfectly in line with their seeded position. Again, that wouldn’t be enough. |
On his second curve, Arjmand passed two runners and handed off the baton in third place to LeLong. On the first straight away, LeLong was passed by Independence High Magnet School’s anchor leg, but LeLong held on. In the final stretch, LeLong came back up to Tiger runner’s right side, battling it out for 50 meters and ultimately pulled ahead! With the 4×400m relay bronze finish and Slaughter’s scoring no points in the event, the Greenies boys secured the Regional Team Runner-up title. Congratulations to our Boys Regional Meet Runner-ups!
Next up is the state championship meet this Friday (5/9) at LSU in Baton Rouge. Good luck Greenies!
