Newman Gets Strong Pitching Effort But Falls Late to Notre Dame, 3-2

In Saturday’s first game, Newman carried a lead into the final inning behind a strong performance on the mound but gave up two runs in the seventh, falling 3-2 to the Pioneers.

In the first inning, catcher Charles Wilson delivered a run-scoring double to put the Greenies ahead 1-0. Newman continued to apply pressure in the middle innings, with right fielder Malcolm Schairer reaching and eventually scoring in the fourth after pitcher Jack Falgoust came through with an RBI single to regain a 2-1 lead.

Newman’s pitching set the tone early. Falgoust delivered a strong start, working 4.1 innings while allowing just one run and striking out five. Collier Villere followed with 2.2 innings of relief, limiting damage despite a late push from Notre Dame. As a staff, Newman held Notre Dame to just four hits and one earned run across seven innings. However, in the top of the seventh, the Pioneers were able to single and score two runs in what would ultimately be the game winners, snapping the Greenies’ 15-game winning streak.

In the second game later that evening, facing elimination, Newman used early execution and dominant pitching to secure a 2–1 win over the Pioneers, holding firm late to close out a tight playoff game. The away team for this one, Newman struck first in the opening inning when leadoff hitter Jack Falgoust reached and moved into scoring position before Atticus LaFleur delivered an RBI single to right.

In the top of the second inning, the Greenies manufactured what proved to be the decisive run. Left-handed hitter Malcolm Schairer reached base and ultimately stole home to extend the lead to 2–0. Tanner Robert, Atticus LaFleur, Benjamin and Schairer also collected hits for the Greenies.

On the mound, Newman ace Christian Sauska worked six strong innings, consistently attacking the zone and neutralizing Notre Dame’s strong lineup. The hurler gave up six hits and one run (zero earned) over six innings, striking out eight and walking none. In the seventh, reliever Collier Villere entered and retired the side, finishing the game with a clean inning to secure the exciting win and force a Game 3.

Sophomore Pitchers Lead Newman to Series Victory in Decisive Game 3

In the third and final game of the series on Sunday afternoon, the Greenies started with sophomore Augie Sauska on the mound. Although Notre Dame took the lead with a solo home run in the first inning, the younger Sauska pitched a gem, giving up just the one hit and striking out three in four innings pitched. In the fifth inning, sophomore Peter Barras came on in relief and allowed just two hits, with a strikeout.

After Newman failed to reach base in the first three innings, the Greenies erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jack Falgoust led off with a walk and Charles Wilson bunted his way on. Cleanup hitter Atticus LaFleur doubled in two runs to take the lead, and two more scored when Benjamin Singer and Tanner Robert were hit by pitches with the bases loaded. Falgoust batted again in the inning and laced a three-run double to clear the bases and make it 7-1. The Greenies would score another run on a sacrifice fly by Collier Villere and hold on for the huge 8-3 win.

This weekend, the Greenies (#2 seed) will host The Dunham School (#11 seed), at Avenger Field in another best-of-three series. The games are Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 12pm, and if necessary, on Saturday following the earlier game, around 3pm. Good luck, Greenies!
