Baseball
While the Diamond Greenies’ season ended last Saturday in a tough playoff match-up at Pope John Paul, the outcome of that series does not in any way diminish the success and excitement of the 2024 campaign. Led by a great group of Seniors (pictured above) - Clayton Stevens, Jacob Dusanksy, Peter Loop, Guy Guidroz, Conners Palmer, Jack Nesser, Ethan Dulitz, and Brendan Blackburn - Newman went 17 - 10, earned the #9 seed in the Select Division III playoffs, had a 9 game win streak, followed by a 9 game losing streak, then another 8 game win streak, and five absolutely epic wins in memorable battles against Eunice (2-0), Holy Cross (4-2), Country Day (2-1), Shaw (11-9) and H.L. Bourgeois (11-10), the last two of which involved 5 run and 7 run comebacks in front of incredible home crowds at Avenger.

Diamond Greenie Dinner for the Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores at world famous Charlie’s Steakhouse. More onion rings, please!
The 2024 Diamond Greenies and their parents extend a huge thank you to Head Coach Pat Adams and Assistant Coaches Steve Victory, Logan Taravella, Andrew Scherer, and Frankie Glaviano, for their hard work, dedication and leadership this season!
While the 2024 team graduates a solid group of Senior leaders, the 2025 team promises to be special, with a bevy of experienced pitchers, fielders, and batters returning. The future of Newman baseball is definitely bright. Go Greenies!
Golf
The 2024 Newman Boys Golf team completed a very successful season by finishing in fourth place in Division III of the LHSAA State Golf Championship. Congratulations to the entire golf team and Coach Giorlando on a great year!
After inclement weather in the Lafayette area on April 29th canceled all round one play, the Greenies played 36 holes on April 30th in grueling variable conditions and fought hard all day. Noah Chavin of Ascension Episcopal set a course record (and LHSAA record) with a -9 under par 63 in the second round to lead the Blue Gators to their sixth straight Division III title. Trailing Ascension Episcopal in the team rankings was a very strong Loyola Prep team, Parkview Baptist was third at (637) and Newman was fourth at (644).
Newman Senior Niel Phillips (pictured above) was the individual runner-up medalist, shooting rounds of 68 and 73 (141) to finish -3 under par for the tournament.
Individual Results:
Niel Phillips 68-73--141
DJ Randolph 84-81--165
Chase Hoffman 82-87--169
Jax Mendler 83-86--169
Rowan Dravid 93-88--181
Newman Boys Golf has come a long way in the last few years. The 2024 team defeated longtime rivals and nemesis Jesuit and St. Charles Catholic, won a District title for the third year in a row, qualified as a team for the State tournament for the second consecutive year, and then competed against some of the best teams and players in the state regardless of division.
Well done boys!
Lacrosse
The Newman Greenies Lacrosse team came up just short against the Catholic Bears last Friday night in the Semi Finals of the LHSAA State Lacrosse Championship in Baton Rouge. The Greenies were undeterred early on after two quick goals in the first quarter of the game by Catholic, and continued to fight and claw back throughout the remainder of the contest – finding themselves with a tied ballgame at both the half and heading into the 4th quarter. The ball simply bounced in favor of the Bears in the 4th, and when the final horn blew, someone had to get on the bus disappointed – and for this 2024 season, it was unfortunately Newman.
However, there is a ton to be proud of this season for the Greenies (including statistically, fielding the most successful and well-rounded squad in the entire 8 year history of the program, spanning back to the inaugural 2017 season). Here are some of those stats:
6 players with 10+ goals on the season
21 players who saw significant minutes in meaningful games (for context, the initial 2017 team had 16 players – TOTAL)
0 Sideline penalties
0 player conduct penalties
0 broken windows at Newman
A huge congratulations to our seniors, most of whom have been part of the program since 8th grade, and to the new Greenie Lacrosse captains, as nominated by their teammates for the 2025 season – Max Kukuy, Patrick Landry, Eli Friend and William Mahfouz.
At their end of season banquet on Monday, Coach Burns also presented the team awards for the 2024 season, as follows:
Overall MVP: Max Kukuy
Best Offensive Player: Eli Friend
Best Defensive Player: McCall Engelhardt
Coaches Award: Patrick Landry
There is a ground swell of talent in the Newman Lacrosse program, both with rising upperclassmen and coming in from the now 2-time champion Newman Middle School Lacrosse Team. The future is very bright for the program, and we could not be more proud of these boys. A HUGE final thanks to all the coaches and their time, dedication and mentoring of our student athletes.
Till next season….
