2025 LHSAA State Outdoor Championship Meet

This reporter is writing his last piece on the heels of our final team dinner, where athletes, parents, and coaches gather each year to celebrate what was hopefully a successful season. For the Newman track and field team, it certainly was.

At the state outdoor championship meet last week in Baton Rouge, the Newman athletes pulled up to the host venue at Louisiana State University in style. The mustard yellow school bus glistened along with its bright red hazard lights flashing in a recognizable rhythmic pattern. The coaches hopped off the bus to unload and set up the tents like a well-practiced pit crew.

After setting a personal record in tent construction, the coaches stepped back onto the bus followed by the squishing sound of sopping wet shoes. “Alright y’all, it’s time to go,” the coaches said as water droplets were rolling off their already soaked clothing.

The track team was met with some of the hardest conditions in which to compete. Heavy rain layered the environment for the entirety of the meet, followed by a drop in temperature that added a cataclysmic chill as the cherry on top. Performing in this kind of weather always proves to be difficult, especially when wearing shorts and a singlet. Runners are weighed down, hurdlers fear for their landing, jumpers struggle to find their footing, and throwers desperately try and stay warm and keep their muscles loose in-between throwd. The thought of personal records fly out the window in this environment as athletes are just trying to survive. But not the Greenies. No, the Greenies were unphased.

Setting the Tone

Just as all our stories begin, the 4x800m relays lead off the meet. Seniors CC Eustis and Avery Summerour, who are no strangers to running this event at the State Meet, literally and figuratively, passed the baton on to the freshman legs of the relay, Elise Barnett and Sadie Meyer. The crew secured a bronze finish in the relay, and seniors gave way to the freshman to carry on the girls’ relay tradition.

In a similar fashion, senior Jack Hance led off the boys 4x800m relay one last time, putting the rest of the crew (Asher McCoul, Rivers LeLong, and Logan DeGruy) in position to secure silver medals. Congratulations to our podium-worthy relay teams!

A Story Untold

Logan DeGruy, the district and regional Track MVP, put it all out there for this one. Anchoring the 4x800m relay, and running in the 1600m and 3200m, DeGruy was faced with running 3.5 miles at varying speeds in a downpour. Quietly battling intense shin splints all season long, and refocusing his training routine midseason from the 800m to the 3200m, DeGruy has pushed through to achieve so many successes. In Baton Rouge, his hard work culminated with a blazing personal record time of 4 minutes and 27 seconds in the 1600m in the worst weather conditions. His embodiment of true resilience and fortitude this year makes him worthy of high praise.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner

There are unsurprisingly several state champions amongst our Greenies. In the long jump, Remi Cousin launched herself into a sopping muck of a sandpit further than anyone else could, though Claire Charpentier was only half a foot behind, securing second. Jada Recasner, with a fierce focus like no other, successfully defended her title of indoor state champion in the triple jump.

And Dylan Kolenovsky, with no need for his signature sunglasses at this meet, launched the discus and shot put into the storm for two winning marks. Congratulations to our 2025 Outdoor Track and Field State Champions!
