Drake’s Clutch Hitting Propels Greenies to Victory Over Warren Easton

Earlier in the week, Felicity Drake drove in seven runs on three hits to lead the Greenies past Warren Easton Charter High School 19-1.

Drake tripled in the third scoring three, hit an inside the park home run in the fourth scoring two, and singled in the fourth scoring two.

The Greenies beat the Lady Eagles thanks in part to five runs in the third inning, including Drake’s triple and a run-scoring single by Madison Able. Newman erupted for twelve runs in the fourth inning, with runs batted in by Maryn Huber (double), Drake (home run and single), Alyse Dulitz (triple), London Lumpkins, Sydney Able, Jesse Lambert (double), and Piper Christian.

Lambert stepped in the circle first for Newman. The hurler surrendered just three hits and one run over four innings, striking out seven and walking five. The Greenies collected 14 hits and drew ten walks while committing no errors in the field. Madison Able and Maddox Bazley each walked twice to lead the team.

Newman Greenies Fight Back Against Haynes Academy, Lose on Walk off in Extra Innings

On Thursday, the girls fell to Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies, 14-13 at JPRD on the final play of the game. The game was tied at 13 in the bottom of the seventh when the Yellow Jackets singled, scoring the winning run.

The Greenies dug themselves an early hole by allowing twelve runs in the first inning. However, the Greenies fought back and were able to eventually take the lead over the Yellow Jackets in the fifth 13-12 before eventually falling 14-13 in extra innings.

Newman Greenies got on the board in the first inning after Sydney Able singled, scoring two runs and scored five more runs on three hits in the top of the third inning. Alyse Dulitz and Piper Christian both had run-scoring singles and Sydney Able’s ball to the shortstop was scored an error scored and allowed three runs to score.

Newman Greenies made the score 12-11 in the top of the fourth inning when Jesse Lambert hit a monster solo home run to center field. Felicity Drake then tripled, scoring one run, Madison Able doubled, scoring one run, and Piper Christian doubled, scoring one run.

Lambert pitched five innings in relief as the Greenies fought all the way back from the 12-2 deficit. The senior allowed four hits and two runs while striking out six and walking three.

Christian led the team with four runs batted in, Lambert and Madison Able collected four hits apiece and leadoff hitter Sydney Able had two of the team’s seven walks. Lambert also stole three bases.

Gymnastics

Greenies Gymnasts Shine at Baton Rouge Magnet High Invitational #2

The gymnastics team delivered a strong performance at the Baton Rouge Magnet High Invitational #2 on Saturday in Baton Rouge. Jackie Bellaire stood out with a third-place finish on both floor exercise and vault.

Teammates Esme Brannon, Claire Cope, and Mia Hoffman also turned in solid routines across the competition, and working hard in advance of next month’s state meet. Good job, Greenies!

Tennis

Last week, the girls tennis team had a strong and exciting week of competition. On Wednesday, the Greenies earned a big 3-2 win over their rival, Academy of the Sacred Heart, in a competitive match at the City Park Tennis Center. The team showed great focus, teamwork, and spirit throughout the match.

Over the weekend, the girls traveled to Baton Rouge to compete in the SJA Tournament at Highland Park Tennis Center, facing extremely strong competition from teams in Louisiana and Mississippi. Despite the tough matches, the tournament provided valuable experience for the girls and served as a great warm-up as the regionals tournament approaches.

The boys team also had a great week, taking on Benjamin Franklin High School and coming away with a hard-fought 3–2 victory. One of the standout moments came from the doubles team of Jai Bansal and Thomas Gershanik, who delivered an emphatic 6–1, 6–1 win, setting the tone with confidence and precision. Every match was competitive, but the team stayed composed in key moments to secure the win.

The momentum carried straight into Thursday, when the boys traveled to Baton Rouge to face St. Michael the Archangel High School. This time, there was no drama, and just dominance. From the first serve to the final point, the team controlled every court, sweeping the match 5–0. The final point of the day came from Micah Eisner, who completed the sweep in style with a decisive and lengthy three-set victory, battling through a tough match to close things out.

With only one loss on the season, the boys have put together an extremely strong campaign, combining resilience in tight matches with the ability to completely overwhelm opponents.

Next up is Senior Night against Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies at the Audubon Park Tennis Courts on April 14. The boys will be especially motivated to win this one as they look to keep the momentum going and celebrate their seniors.

Track and Field

Argote Shatters a 16-Year-Old Record as Greenies Dominate Multiple Events at Mardi Gras Relays

The atmosphere at Tad Gormley Stadium was electric on Friday but nothing moved faster than the Greenies track and field team. In a night defined by shattered records and personal bests, the Greenies turned the Mardi Gras Relays into a historic showcase of speed and strength.

The highlight of the evening belonged to Madelyn Argote, who delivered a performance for the ages in the 400m. Blasting out of the blocks and maintaining a blistering pace through the final turn, Argote crossed the finish line in a stunning 57.89 seconds. The time earned her a gold Mardi Gras Medal and officially erased the long-standing Newman school record of 58.16, set back in 2010 by Lily Miller. Argote has made a habit of hitting personal records (PRs) this season, and with her current trajectory, the New Orleans track community expects those numbers to keep dropping as she progresses through the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, Newman’s relay teams weren't content with just winning, they wanted to be in the history books. In the 800m sprint medley relay (SMR), the girls powerhouse quartet of Lili Arjmand, Remi Cousin, Jada Recasner, and Argote didn't just break the school record, they demolished the venue record. The team clocked in at 1:51.66, nearly seven seconds faster than the previous venue record held by St. Mary’s Dominican High School.

In the boys 4000m distance medley relay (DMR), the distance squad proved they have the lungs and the heart to match the sprinters. Rivers LeLong, Cyrus Arjmand, Asher McCoul, and Logan DeGruy combined for a tactical masterclass. Their finishing time of 11:07.45 set a new Tad Gormley Stadium record, surpassing the 11:18.44 mark previously held by Brother Martin High School.

The Greenies were equally dominant in the field and individual distance events, racking up gold medals across the board:

Remi Cousin: Already a factor on the SMR team, Cousin soared to a massive PR in the long jump, hitting 18' 1" to take first place. She also secured a silver medal in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.95.

Dylan Kolenovsky: A force in the throwing circle, Kolenovsky took home first place in the discus (147' 7"), second place in the javelin (162' 8"), and third place in the shot put (45' 9").

Kiyari Ivey: Consistency was the name of the game for Ivey. She secured first place in the discus with a throw of 85' 3", third place in the shot put (28' 7"), and a fourth place finish in the javelin (84' 8"), hitting PRs in all three.

Rivers LeLong: Adding to his relay success, LeLong dominated the Boys 800m, taking gold with a sharp 2:01.93.

Aaron Washington: Had a busy and successful day, taking second in the long jump (20' 7"), second in the high jump (5' 6"), and fourth in the triple jump (36' 11").

Tripp De Laureal and Michael Madigan took second and third in the 3200m respectively, while Asher McCoul grabbed a third place finish in the 1600m (4:52.78).

Randall McMillan: Secured a silver medal in the pole vault (7' 0") and she had a strong fifth place finish in the 400m.

Genevieve Plaisance: Earned a bronze medal in the high jump with a leap of 4' 8".

"To see these records fall after 16 years, and to see our relay teams taking down venue marks, shows exactly where this program is headed," noted head coach Uche Okpalobi after the meet. “These athletes are exactly who we thought they were and more,” he added.

With the Mardi Gras Relays in the rearview mirror, the Greenies carry immense momentum into the heart of the outdoor season. If Friday night was any indication, the Newman record board might need a fresh coat of paint by the end of May.

Baseball

Newman Breaks It Open in the Fourth to Defeat Archbishop Shaw 5–1

The baseball team used a four-run fourth inning and a complete performance on the mound and in the field to defeat Archbishop Shaw High School 5–1 last week. In a tight game early, the Eagles tied it in the fourth before the Greenies immediately responded with the decisive inning.

The rally began with Charles Wilson, who sparked the inning with a line drive single. Newman quickly built pressure, and Collier Villere delivered the tying run with an RBI single. Benjamin Singer followed with another RBI knock to give the Greenies the lead, and Malcolm Schairer broke the game open with a two-RBI triple, extending the advantage to 5–1.

Thanks to sharp pitching and clean fielding, Newman controlled the game defensively. Jack Falgoust limited the Eagles to a single run over five innings, and Villere closed the door with two hitless innings out of the bullpen. The Greenies played clean behind them, highlighted by a key back-pick at second by Wilson, and never allowed Shaw to generate any late momentum.

Newman Uses Patient Approach and Late Surge to Defeat Belle Chasse 6–1

On Friday, the Greenies combined disciplined at-bats, timely hitting, and strong pitching to pull away from Belle Chasse High School for a 6–1 win at Avenger Field.

The Greenies broke through in the third when Atticus Lafleur lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring a run and giving Newman a 1–0 lead. The Cardinals answered in the fourth to tie the game at 1–1, but Newman responded immediately in the bottom of the fifth. The inning began with continued plate discipline, as Tanner Robert reached via walk and Charles Wilson followed with a single to apply pressure. With the bases loaded, Christian Sauska drew a walk to force in the go-ahead run. Collier Villere then put the ball in play, reaching on a fielder’s choice that brought in another run and extended the lead to 4–1.

Newman added separation in the sixth. After working baserunners on, Jack Falgoust delivered a clutch two-RBI single to left field, scoring Benjamin Singer and Malcolm Schairer to push the advantage to 6–1.

On the mound, Newman received a strong performance from Sauska, who set the tone over four innings, limiting the Cardinals to just one hit and one run while working through traffic with three strikeouts. Villere took over in relief and was equally effective, tossing three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and no walks while maintaining control and closing out the game.

Defensively, the Greenies were clean throughout, committing no errors. Falgoust anchored the infield with a standout performance, recording multiple outs from both third base and shortstop, including a smooth backhanded play at shortstop to end the game.

Varsity Sports Now, March 27, 2026

Up next, the boys will host Bonnabel Magnet Academy High School today at 6:45pm and Livingston’s Doyle High School will come to town at 3:30pm tomorrow. Good luck, Greenies!

Lacrosse

The Greenies hit the field Wednesday night for a tough matchup against Jesuit High School, battling hard from the first whistle to the last. While the final score tilted Jesuit’s way, 13–4, Newman showed plenty of spark, grit, and classic Greenie determination.

Freshman Luke Whelan led the scoring charge with two goals, slicing through the defense with confidence. Seniors Christopher Connolly and Price Demeyers each added a goal of their own, keeping Newman on the board and the energy high. On the ground, it was a workhorse kind of night. Demeyers and James Ryan scooped up six ground balls each, refusing to give the Blue Jays an easy possession.

The defensive pressure was relentless, with Parker Connolly causing four turnovers, and Ryan adding three more, keeping Jesuit on their toes. At the FOGO position, Colin Farnsworth battled his way to four wins, giving Newman key possessions throughout the game. Goalie Emeric Laborde had a monster performance racking up 17 saves! Despite the scoreboard, the Greenies showed heart, hustle, and plenty to build on.

Greenies Grab the Win in Youngsville!

On Saturday, the squad hit the road to Youngsville and came home with a well‑earned 7–5 victory over Loyola College Prep, showcasing teamwork, grit, and a whole lot of Greenie pride. Christopher Connolly led the offensive charge with a hat trick, firing in three goals and setting the tone early. William Long added two goals, while Price Demeyers and Luke Whelan each chipped in one to round out the scoring. The ball was moving beautifully too, with assists from Ezra Friend, Demeyers, and Whelan.

On the ground, Newman was all hustle. Connolly scooped up six ground balls, James Kuuskraa grabbed four, and both James Ryan and Demeyers added three more apiece, big plays that kept possessions alive and momentum rolling. Defensively, the Greenies were locked in. Ryan caused three turnovers, while William Long and Whelan each forced one of their own, disrupting the Flyers’ offense all afternoon.
