Baseball

The Diamond Greenies dropped 4 games over the last week, losing to Riverdale (1-4), St. Charles Catholic (4-12 and 0-8) and Willow (1-6). Over the four games, Senior Captain Peter Loop led the Greenies with 4 hits, Sophomore Christian Sauska had 3 hits, and Senior Jack Nesser picked up his first home run in game 1 against St. Charles Catholic with a deep shot over the left field fence at Mike Miley. Sauska, fellow-Sophomores Charles Wilson and Jack Falgoust, Seniors Brendan Blackburn, Ethan Dulitz, and Clayton Stevens, and Juniors Tyler Zweifler, Henry Cook, and Fulton Price all contributed from the pitcher’s mound.

The Diamond Greenies are now 9-9 on the season, and are ranked 13th in the Louisiana Select Division III power ratings. After a brief break for Easter, the Varsity Greenies return to action with a five game slate next week against Ascension Episcopal (Monday), Riverside Academy (Tuesday), Warren Easton (Thursday), Ben Franklin (Friday), and St. Martin’s (Saturday).

The Junior Varsity Diamond Greenies also had an eventful week at the ballpark picking up a big win against program-nemesis St. Charles Catholic (SCC), dropping a close game to Haynes, and tying SCC in a second game. In the win against SCC, Freshman Malcolm Schairer led the Greenies going 2-3 at the plate, while Juniors Alex Dulitz and Fulton Price, Sophomore Collier Villere, and Freshman Benjamin Singer picked up base hits for the Greenies. Villere was the winning pitcher, and fan favorite Wrigley Stewart knocked in the game deciding run on his 4th inning 2 RBI single. In the second game against SCC, Freshman Atticus Lafleur hit a solo homer and Falgoust, Schairer and George Loop each contributed two innings of excellent work on the pitcher’s mound.

Lacrosse

On Friday evening, the No.1 ranked Cougars from St. Thomas Moore High School in Lafayette traveled to Lupin Field to take on Newman Lacrosse. Originally scheduled for Thursday, the matchup was moved to Friday night in light of impending storms that were threatened to roll through Orleans Parish. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Greenies brought the noise when they walked onto the field Friday evening and unleashed the thunder on St. Thomas Moore from the first whistle. While the game remained close through the initial quarter of the game, the Greenies struck first and never trailed for the remainder of the contest. When the final horn sounded, Newman celebrated a 10-8 victory, a revitalization of their season and an extremely manageable remaining regular season schedule leading into the final state playoff push.

As has been constant all season, Newman saw meaningful contributions on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, and up and down the roster sheet. On offense, Sophomore Price Demeyers led the attack line - putting 3 in the back of the cage, with additional contributions around the crease from Junior William Mahfouz (1 goal; 2 assists) and Senior Coalter McCall (1 goal). Junior Max Kukuy led the midfield with 4 goals and 2 assists, and while Junior Eli Friend only found the back of the net one time, he added 3 assists, 4 ground balls and 2 caused turn overs.

On defense, the goal likely looked half its size to the visitors from Lafayette as Senior McCall “YOUUUU - SHALLLL - NOTTTT - PASSSSS!!!!” Engelhardt stuffed STM on 18 of their 26 shots. Junior Patrick Landry caused 6 of the Cougars’ turn overs and vacuumed up 3 ground balls, and Senior William Darragh added 5 ground balls and 2 turn overs.

Prior to spring break, Newman Lacrosse will host the Chaos Lacrosse Club from the Northshore on Lupin Field at 6:30 on Wednesday night.

Softball

The Softball Greenies went 3-3 this week playing six very tough games against six high-quality opponents.

Starting with a 16-0 victory over St. Martin’s with yet another no-hitter. This time by Sophomore Sydney Able as she pitched 4 innings, striking out 4. When you score 16, you are going to have a lot of contributions. Big hitters for this game were Seniors Maddie Herbert and Ella Faliveno, and Sophomore Able

Senior Night was Tuesday, March 19 and the Greenies didn’t disappoint. They easily defeated Edna Karr 16-1 with Senior Emma Passler getting the win as starting pitcher. Also, Senior Maddie Herbert showed up on Senior Night blasting a 3 run home run to break the game open. Other big hitters were Jesse Lambert and Madison Able with multiple RBI and extra base hits.

Newman’s 8-game winning streak came to an end Friday Night as they were defeated by Catholic New Iberia in Newman’s first road softball tournament. The girls traveled to New Iberia on Friday, and stayed over to play 2 more games Saturday going 1-2 for the weekend against some very tough teams. The overnight road trip was a great experience for our young team, and allowed for some quality team building while playing in a hostile environment. At the end of the season, we hope to look back at this weekend as a true turning point in our overall growth as a softball program.

Newman returned to the diamond on Monday, March 25 and was narrowly defeated by Thomas Jefferson, 6-2. This contest was a tough 7-inning game in which Newman had several chances to win. Thomas Jefferson’s Senior Pitcher kept Newman off balance all game with her changeup and fastball. Freshman Felicity Drake homered in the 2nd inning with a blast to left field, clearing the 25’ fence.

The Greenies are now 9-3 on the season and ranked #15 in Division III. They will face #7 Country Day on Wednesday,  March 27 at 4:30 at the JPRD Softball Complex in Metairie. We hope to see you there.
