Lacrosse
Last weekend started with a match Friday night (3/21) at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge. The Bears have knocked the Greenies out of the state playoffs in each of the last three years. The team almost pulled off an immaculate comeback, scoring three goals in the final 39 seconds to tie the game 10-10 and force the overtime period. Although the Bears won again, 11-10 in overtime, it felt different this time. The Greenies were in control most of the game, and a few dropped balls and missed shots were the difference.
The Greenies were led on offense by Max Kukuy and his four amazing goals. Eli Friend almost saved the day with four face-off wins in the last minute, setting up or scoring all three goals to force the extra period. Congratulations to Voss Finkelstein who dominated in his face-offs and gave the Greenies a chance. And special props to James Ryan who as a long-poler plays defense, but got in on the action with a full field run and score.
On Sunday (3/23), the Greenies got their frustration out with an afternoon beat down of Loyola College Prep in Baton Rouge at Central High School. Newman was victorious 21-7, with Kukuy and Friend providing the scoring punch with eight and five goals respectively. William Mahfouz added four more and George Pipes added to the scoring with his second goal of the year to go along with his eight face-off wins, almost matching Friend’s nine. The defense was led by James Ryan and Patrick Landry’s nine and eight ground ball recoveries, respectively, and Emeric Laborde’s 11 saves.
The Greenies have a huge test this week with Jesuit High School of New Orleans coming to Michael Lupin Field tomorrow evening (Wednesday 3/26) at 7pm for what should be a great league match. Chick-fil-A will be onsite for this match and two others this season, selling and serving chicken sandwiches and other selections, so you won’t want to miss it. Go Greenies! | ![]() |

Track and Field
Episcopal Relays 3/19/25
As the season progresses, the Newman runners, jumpers, and throwers continue to astonish spectators with more medals and countless PRs.
The 4x800m relays persist to lead off meets and set the tone for success, this time taking a gold and bronze medal. CC Eustis and Avery Summerour once again battled it out and traded places the entirety of the open 800m race, this time with Eustis coming out on top by a tenth of a second. Logan DeGruy put on a show in the 1600m with a powerful and energetic kick in the final 200m, ultimately taking first in the race with Maslen L’Esperance just a couple seconds behind, coming in at a third place finish. | ![]() |
![]() | In the field events, Louis Barnett vaulted his way to a Gold in the pole vault with a new PR of 10 ft 6in. Remi Cousin floated over hurdles for 100m to earn herself a bronze and a new PR. Newman’s indoor state champion, Jada Recasner, walked away with a silver in the triple jump and set a new PR by 4 inches! |
Lastly, but certainly not least, a big shoutout here to team captain Dylan Kolenovsky who, yet again, won the boys field MVP of the meet after walking away with a medal in all three of his events, including two golds.
Our athletes are building a strong base and demonstrating a model of gradual improvement as they look toward the next meets and ultimately, the state championships. Furthermore, the underclassmen continue to embody fearlessness and the desire to compete, as Anne Kellogg and Asher McCoul both stepped up to the plate in the open 400m when called upon to fill in for teammates who could not run. Kellogg set a four second PR and McCoul also set a PR, breezing past the 60-second mark in 57.42. Congratulations to the team’s continued improvement!
Baseball
Newman Pulls Away Late to Defeat De La Salle 9-3
With a bald eagle watching from the light standard high above, Newman broke open a tight game with a five-run seventh inning to secure a 9-3 victory over De La Salle High School last Tuesday (3/18). Strong plate discipline and timely hitting proved to be the difference.
The Cavaliers struck first with a groundout RBI in the opening frame, but Malcolm Schairer drew a bases-loaded walk in the second to even the score at 1-1. Newman took the lead in the third, capitalizing on two walks to go up 3-1.
The game remained tight until the Greenies exploded for five runs in the seventh. Charles Wilson tripled to drive in two, Collier Villere followed with an RBI single, and Atticus Lafleur capped off the rally with a two-run double.
Newman showed patience at the plate, drawing 11 walks and stealing four bases, while the pitching staff held De La Salle to just five hits while working around traffic on the bases.

Golf
Last Thursday (3/20), boys golf team competed against E.D. White Catholic High School and E.D. White Catholic High School and St. Charles Catholic High School at Grand Ridge Golf Club in Luling. The tight course was tough for all team, with hazards and out of bounds lurking everywhere. Plus it was very dry, making any errant shot sure to find a hazard and making the next shot a challenge, and windy conditions made the day even more difficult.
Despite the conditions, the Newman boys won the tournament, beating St. Charles, which came in second by six strokes. D.J. Randolph took medalist honors, with the low 9-hole score of 39. Also competing for the Greenies were Chase Hoffman, Jax Mendler, Colin Moffett, and Rowan Dravid. Next up, the boys will play a tournament today against Metairie Park Country Day School at Metairie’s Lakewood Golf Club. | ![]() Instagram: newman_golf_ |
