Newman Lacrosse Rallies From 5–0 Deficit to Shock Catholic, 8–7

In one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the season, Newman delivered a stunning 8–7 comeback win over Catholic High School on Friday night at home on VSN here, erasing a five‑goal deficit and sealing the victory on a last‑second strike from freshman Luke Whelan.

The Bears controlled the opening quarter and early second, jumping out to a 5–0 lead before the Greenies finally found their rhythm. The spark came at the faceoff X, where Colin Farnsworth began to tilt possession Newman's way with six faceoff wins and four ground balls, helping fuel a surge that flipped the momentum.

Newman responded with six straight goals, a run powered by senior Will Long, who finished with a hat trick and added two assists. His third goal, coming midway through the third quarter, gave Newman its first lead at 6-5. Catholic answered late in the period to knot the game at 6–6, setting up a tense, defensive fourth quarter.

The Greenies’ back line delivered under pressure. James Ryan led the defensive charge with four caused turnovers, while Corbett Parrino and Edge Levine added two apiece, disrupting Catholic’s attempts to regain control. Goalie Emeric Laborde was outstanding throughout, turning away 15 shots to keep Newman within striking distance.

With the score tied 7–7 and the clock winding down, Newman held for the final possession. The ball found Whelan, who had already contributed two ground balls and the first goal of the night. With 17 seconds remaining, the freshman found space and ripped a 15‑yard shot past the keeper for the game‑winner, sending the Greenies fans into a frenzy.

Newman Blanks St. Charles Catholic 10–0 Behind Lafleur and Sauska

On Friday, the baseball team delivered a dominant, all-around performance in a 10–0 shutout victory over St. Charles Catholic High School on VSN here, powered equally by Atticus Lafleur’s five-RBI performance at the plate and Christian Sauska’s no-hit effort on the mound. Charles Wilson also set the offensive tone early and finished a perfect 3-for-3.

Varsity Sports Now, March 20, 2026

Newman established control immediately in the first inning. Wilson opened with a sharp single, and the Greenies capitalized when Lafleur drove a two-run double to right field, giving Newman a 2–0 lead.

Newman added another run in the third inning when Wilson tripled, and Sauska followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the lead to 3–0.

While the offense built the advantage, Sauska dominated on the mound from the outset. He worked through early walks without allowing a hit, generating strikeouts and weak contact to keep the Comets off balance and off the scoreboard.

Newman backed its pitching with a clean defensive performance, committing no errors and consistently converting outs behind strong infield play from Collier Villere and Jack Falgoust. That effort included a key defensive play in the second inning, when Wilson threw out a runner attempting to steal second base, marking his 13th runner thrown out on the basepaths this season.

NOLA.com, March 20, 2026

The game broke open in the fifth inning. Newman erupted for seven runs, highlighted by Lafleur’s three-run home run to left field. The inning featured disciplined at-bats and consistent pressure, with additional run-producing contributions from Collier Villere, Malcolm Schairer, and Tanner Robert as the Greenies capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting to extend the lead to 10–0.

Christian Sauska opened the offensive surge with a single and scored twice. George Loop added a single and drove in three runs, including two during the opening rally.

Charles Wilson contributed a first-inning single and scored, while Collier Villere and Atticus Lafleur each reached and scored as Newman continued to pressure the Falcons’ pitching staff.

Benjamin Singer added a sacrifice fly, and Newman took full advantage of five walks in the inning.

In the second. J.B. Lawrence singled and scored, Brunson Morris delivered the game’s only double for Newman and drove in a run, Cullen Mullaly added an RBI single, and additional pressure from walks and another error pushed five more runs across.

Tennis

The boys tennis team faced a challenging but defining week, starting with a hard-fought match against a strong squad from Jesuit High School on Tuesday. Despite a close loss, the match showed the team’s competitiveness and grit. More importantly, there was no lingering on the result, and the focus immediately shifted to bouncing back.

That response came in full force later in the week against Metairie Park Country Day School. The day kicked off with singles, where the tone was set early. Arjun Walvekar, Peyton Dang, and Micah Eisner each delivered commanding wins, taking control of their matches with confidence and consistency.

With momentum building, Aikum Bedi stepped onto the court in what became the most intense match of the day. In a battle that went down to the wire, Bedi held his nerve and pulled through, clinching a crucial fourth point for the Greenies, the number needed to secure the overall victory over the Cajuns. The boys continued to play with energy and precision, winning six out of seven matches, leaving no doubt about the result.

The team now looks to carry this momentum forward into their upcoming match today against Benjamin Franklin High School. Good luck, Greenies!
