The Diamond Greenies had a tough week at the ballpark, dropping 3 close games to Belle Chasse 3-4, Chalmette 0-3, and Central Catholic 2-4. It does not get any easier for the Greenies this week, as they face Riverdale on Tuesday and then crank up district play with a two game series with St. Charles Catholic on Thursday and Saturday. Let’s hope the boys can turn things around and get back on track!
Lacrosse
On Wednesday, Newman Lacrosse traveled to Jefferson Parish for a Division 2 matchup against the upstart program at Archbishop Rummel High School. The Greenies’ coaching staff made productive use of the matchup against the Raiders to provide live game experience to its younger and developing players, and as a result, the 12-0 victory saw contributions from multiple players from up and down the roster (including Jackson Fitzpatrick, scoring his first goal and Goalie Emeric Laborde, recording his first 3 saves in the cage). Additional highlights in the contest included: Price Demeyers (2 goals 2 assists); Max Kukuy (4 goals); Eli Friend (1 goal); Wiliam Mahfouz (1 goal); Coalter McCall (1 goal); Corbett Parino (1 goal);Heid Manning (1 goal; 2 assists); William Long (1 assist) and James Kuuskraa (1 assist).
At 6:30 on Thursday, Newman Lacrosse will face one of its toughest matchups of the season at Lupin Field against the currently No.1 ranked Cougars from St.Thomas More High School in Lafayette. Please come out to support our Greenies as they work to turn their season around and reposition themselves for a strong playoff push.
Middle School Player Spotlight: In mid-January, Newman 7th Grader and Middle School Lacrosse attackman Luke Whelan traveled to Orlando, Florida to join hundreds of 7th and 8th graders from across the country to participate in one of four elite training camps as part of the “Junior PLL Championship” (Professional Lacrosse League). In addition to having an opportunity to learn from some of the best PLL players in the world, these athletes were also competing for an invitation to be selected to one of only eight rosters for a junior affiliate of each PLL team, and an opportunity to compete in July in a tournament coinciding with the PLL championships in Baltimore, Maryland. On Friday, Luke was informed by PLL of his selection to be one of the approximately 175 of the best players in his age group in the country (out of more than 750 competing at these camps) to join in the PLL Junior Championship. Luke, along with only two other St. Paul’s eighth graders (all three of which are members of the 2028 ”NOLA Krewe Lacrosse” elite travel team) comprise the only players in Louisiana to be selected. Congratulations Luke, and go make Newman proud in Baltimore in July!
Softball
The Greenies went 4-0 with two No Hitters last week, and have an even bigger week ahead!
The Girls’ Diamond Greenies (6-0) won all four of their games this past week skyrocketing to #7 in the State Softball Power Rankings. Not bad for a team that is in year two of being back on campus as a varsity sport. Newman has outscored their opponents this season 109-7 and only allowed 4 hits in their first 6 games this season.
Last Week’s Softball Results:
3/11/24 Newman vs NOLA Science & Math (No Hitter): Newman easily defeated NOLA Science & Math 17-0 in three innings. Game called for Mercy Rule. Senior Ella Faliveno and Sophomores Jesse Lambert & Sydney Able each homered for the Greenies to lead the way offensively. Jesse Lambert also claimed the victory on the mound as she struck out 6 batters, allowing no hits and then handed the ball over to Senior Emma Passler to close out the game with 3 strike outs of her own.
3/13/24 Newman vs Ursuline: After letting last season’s game vs Ursuline slip away, losing 13-11, Newman took the short walk over to Ursuline with a bit of revenge on their minds. Mission accomplished! Newman dominated Ursuline winning 21-4 in a 5 inning contest. Junior Sydney Gallagher went 4-4 in the leadoff spot, scoring 5 times. Senior Maddie Herbert (3-5, 5 rbi) and Sophomore Jesse Lambert (5-5, 6 rbi) each hit rocket shot homeruns onto Claiborne Avenue. Sydney Able went 4 innings in the circle, allowing 2 hits and zero runs while striking out 2.

On Willow’s home field, with a packed crowd in the stands, Newman jumped out to a 15-0 lead after 3 ½ innings to take control. Final Score ended 18-1 with Jesse Lambert going the distance for the complete game, striking out 11 lion hitters. The offense was provided by Senior Maddie Herbert (1-2, 3 rbi) Sophomores Sydney Able (2-2, 3 rbi) and Jesse Lambert (2-3, 4 rbi) and Freshman Felicity Drake with 4 rbi.

Tennis (Girls)
This past week was very busy for the Newman Girls TennisTeam. On Monday, the girls faced their cross-town academic rival Ben Franklin Falcons at UNO. It was a close competition, but in the doubles lines, the girls were able to secure wins in all of their matches and come away with a 3-2 victory for the Greenies. Newman sophomore Lilly Pollack and junior Emma Conner teamed up to defeat Franklin’s Tatum Roniger and Wanda Hu in a very close match 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(6). Eighth graders Frances Casbarian and Macy Montgomery continued to shine by getting off to an early lead and never looking back in their dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory for the team. And in the longest and most competitive doubles match of the day, sophomore Molly Gorman and eighth grader Catherine Pietras came through big under pressure to defeat the Falcon’s Julia Tucker and Norah Hinkle by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(6) to seal the team victory.
In the singles lines, junior Belle Wanek fought hard andcontinued to prove that she is a true competitor by grinding it out in a tough match against Franklin’s talented Mallory Kymes. And in the other singles match, sophomore Psalm McClellan competed well against Franklin’s Matison Williams. However, both girls were unable to come up with wins this week and fell by scores of 2-6, 4-6 and 1-6, 0-6, respectively.
On Wednesday the girls traveled across the lake to face Archbishop Hannan at the Coquille Tennis Complex. The girls were able to continue their winning week by defeating Hannan 4-1. In the singles competition, Team Captain Gwendolyn Gray defeated her Line 1 opponent Kyleigh Schwartz 6-0, 6-4,and in Line 2, Belle Wanek won her match against Emma Vezina of Hanna 6-2, 6-2. In doubles action, eighth graders Frances Casbarian and Macy Montgomery teamed up again for their second victory of the week and defeated Archbishop Hanna’s Avery Lewis and Claire Cancienne 6-4, 6-4. In Line 2 Doubles, sophomore Lilly Pollack and eighth grader Catherine Pietras emerged victorious against Ashley Esneault and Ella Boudet 6-4, 6-0. In a very competitive match, junior Emma Conner and sophomore Molly Gorman traded sets with Katherine Cancienne and Margaret Smycznski but were unable to secure the victory in the third set tiebreaker 6-2, 3-6, 0-1(2).
All in all, it was a very good week for Newman’s Girls Tennis as these young competitors were able to step up under pressure and secure wins for the team in both of this week’s matches. It is very exciting to see the girls compete hard and continue to improve as the season moves forward towards the regional and state contests in April!
