Track and Field

A competitive indoor season was highlighted by sophomore Jada Recasner’s winning the state championship in the triple jump with a mark of 10.52m. Congratulations Jada!

Since then, the athletes have done a fantastic job of rolling into the outdoor season unphased. With what was a bit of an unusual schedule and a late Mardi Gras break, the athletes persevered and pushed through right into the beginning of the season, shin splints and all!

E.D. White Catholic Relays 2025

The first meet of the season, the E.D. White Catholic Relays 2025, started off strong with true demonstrations of athletic willpower.

Julia Rai came into this meet with a goal of breaking seven minutes in the mile. After discussing her race strategy with her coach and carefully paying attention to her splits during her race, Rai smashed through the 7-minute barrier with a time of 6:52, a 20 second PR!

Then came along a very pleasant surprise, as freshman Cyrus Arjmand, with only a couple 400m races under his belt, won Gold in the 400m with a blazing fast time of 55.9 seconds. And finally, Kai Oyemade’s determination shined when he made a decision that garnered admiration from his team and coaches. After running the 400m earlier in the day, and just finishing the 800m, Oyemade was set to run the 200m with only five minutes of rest. His coaches let him know that he could scratch the event, but he insisted on running his race, no matter how tired, and he did exactly that.

JV District Meet, March 11, 2025

With the freshman out of town on their Washington D.C. trip, the sophomores got their opportunity to show up and show out for the JV District Meet last Tuesday (3/11). Jada Recasner won the 300mH and set a new PR by two seconds. Anne Kellogg won the high jump and, when presented with the unexpected opportunity, she approached the 4x400m relay with a can-do attitude to ultimately help her team win a silver medal. The girls team also strung together a speedy 4x200m relay to take another silver medal.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School-Covington High Judy Baehr Relays

Let it be known that our state champion soccer players are athletes beyond the pitch. To no one’s surprise, they stepped onto the track this meet and made an instant impact. Avery Summerour and CC Eustis duked it out in the 800m, pushing each other every step of the way. Claire Charpentier anchored the 4x200m Relay, securing a gold medal by an astounding 30m lead. And, Jack Hance featured in a gold medal winning 4x800m relay and lead off the silver medal winning 4x400m.

Additionally, Dylan Kolenovsky medaled in all three of his field events, earning himself the Boys Field MVP of the Meet award and new PRs in javelin and discus.

Maslen L’Esperance demonstrated brilliant cerebral strategy in the 3200m, allowing his opponent to lead the race and take the wind resistance until the final laps when he kicked into gear and secured gold.

Finally, a special shoutout to our Girls 4x100m and 4x400m Relays teams. The 4x100m relay featured three sophomores who had never practiced blind handoffs, and with 15 minutes of practice at the beginning of the meet, demonstrated their quick learning capabilities and executed their exchanges beautifully.

For their part, the Girls 4x400m put on a show like no other. After a day full of events, and depleted energy, Ally Davison, CC Eustis, Avery Summerour, and Ella Aucoin mustered up the energy to compete. Davison, never having run the 400m before, rose to the occasion when called upon as the only available alternate, and lead off what would be a bronze medal-winning relay. That effort put the girls in the position to score enough points (92) to win the Girls Team Runner-up trophy, while the boys ended up with 80 points and a solid fourth place finish. Congratulations Greenies!

Golf

The golf team is looking to continue its winning ways, after last year having its most successful season in recent memory. The team is responding well to the new golf coaching staff, Madison Bates and Abby Rowland, who have incorporated high performance workouts in addition to regular practices and tournament qualifying rounds. The team also continues to grow, adding some promising players this year.

To kick off the season, the varsity boys competed against John Curtis Christian School at Audubon Park Golf Club last week. The Newman team was 21 strokes better than the Patriots in the 9-hole tournament. Chase Hoffman played flawlessly and shot a sub-par round -1. The remaining top five contributors were Jax Mendler, +3, D.J. Randolph +4, Colin Moffett +7, and two players tied at +8: Rowan Dravid and Sam Elichman.

The varsity girls’ team has its first tournament tomorrow (3/19) against Academy of the Sacred Heart at Timberlane Golf & Recreation. The boys will be there to cheer them on to victory.

The next boy’s tournament is Thursday (3/20), against E.D. White Catholic High School and St. Charles Catholic High School at Grand Ridge Golf Club in Luling. Go Greenies!

Newman Varsity Softball Team Splits Week, Moves to 3-3 on the Season

The Newman Varsity Softball team had a mixed week, splitting their two games and improving their season record to 3-3.

In the first game, against Bonnabel Magnet Academy High School, the Greenies had to adjust due to missing four players who were on the ninth grade trip to Washington D.C. and two more sidelined by illness or injury. With a short roster, Newman called on team manager Sophia Mills to fill in. Mills stepped up to the plate, literally, going 2-2 with a home run and driving in three RBIs. Alyse Dulitz also contributed with three hits and two RBIs in a powerful offensive performance. The Greenies dominated the game, securing a 19-0 victory. On the mound, Maryn Huber was spectacular, striking out all nine batters she faced, finishing the game with a complete game, no-hit, shutout performance. Newman recorded their first perfect game of the season, allowing no hits, no runs, and no errors.

However, they struggled offensively against the Tigers pitcher, unable to score any runs. The game ended in a 5-0 loss for Newman.

Looking ahead, Newman has a busy schedule, with game this afternoon (3/18) at St. Thomas Aquinas High School and Thursday against Louise S. McGehee School at the Fly at 4pm. Then on Friday (3/21) at 5pm, the girls will take on University Laboratory School at the JPRD Softball Complex. Newman Softball invites fans to join in cheering on the team at the games this week!
