Softball

The softball team played three games last week, winning one of them and bringing their overall season record to 3–5. The Greenies have purposely scheduled a challenging early-season slate of opponents to prepare for defending their district title and building momentum heading into the playoffs. While the competition has been tough, these games are helping the team continue to grow and improve as the season progresses.

Greenies Beat Ben Franklin 18-0 in Perfect Game

The highlight of the week came in a dominant 18–0 victory over Benjamin Franklin High School, on Varsity Sports Now here, in which the Greenies recorded their first perfect game of the season, allowing no hits and no baserunners. The Newman pitchers combined to strike out six Falcons over the three-inning game.

Greenies Fall 8-3 in Loreauville

The Greenies traveled to play Loreauville High School on Friday night for the first game of a weekend tournament hosted by Catholic High School, New Iberia. In front of a packed crowd, Newman battled in a competitive matchup but ultimately fell to the Tigers 8–3.

Newman struck first in the opening inning when Maddox Bazley drove in a run on a groundout. Loreauville answered in the second inning with a triple and a single to take the lead.

The Greenies fought back to tie the game 3–3 in the fourth inning after Madison Able drove in two runs, but the Tigers pulled ahead in the fifth inning with timely hits and a sacrifice fly that broke the tie and secured the victory.

Jesse Lambert, Sydney Able, and Piper Christian each recorded a hit for Newman, while Madison Able led the team with two RBIs.

Panthers Pull Away Late to Beat the Greenies

On Saturday, Newman faced Catholic High School, New Iberia, in the final game of the tournament. The Greenies played a strong defensive game early, turning three double plays and holding a close 3–2 deficit through four innings.

However, the Panthers broke the game open in the fifth inning with a twelve-run rally, eventually winning 15–2.

Maryn Huber continued her strong weekend at the plate, going 2-for-2 to lead Newman in hits. Madison Able also contributed an RBI for the Greenies.

Tennis

The boys tennis team woke up early Saturday morning, a little tired but ready, and made the trip to Houma to take on Vandebilt Catholic High School. From the moment they arrived, the energy was high, and it felt like one of those days where everything was just going to go their way.

Doubles set the tone immediately. The Greenies came out with a flying start, winning all five matches against the Terriers and taking control early. Arjun Walvekar and Peyton Dang kicked things off with a comfortable win, playing clean and confident from the start. Every line followed that momentum, and it all built up to a tight finish from Jai Bansal and Micah Eisner, who battled through a close tiebreak to secure the final doubles point. Just like that, the Greenies were up 5–0.

Singles was no different: just straight dominance. One by one, every line took care of business, staying focused and aggressive throughout. There was no drop in intensity, and it showed in the results. The final match on court was Miles Ogden, and with everyone watching, he closed things out in emphatic fashion, putting the perfect finishing touch on the day.

The boys completed a 10–0 sweep, a full team effort from start to finish. Now, the Greenies look ahead to a big week with matches against Jesuit High School and rivals at Metairie Park Country Day School.

Track and Field

The track and field team competed in the Brother Martin Crusader Relays last week with a slate of great performances, highlighted by multiple top finishes and full results here. For the girls, senior hurdler Remi Cousin blasted through the 100-meter hurdles in 16.40 seconds to take first place in her heat and the overall event. She doubled up with a second place finish in the long jump at 16'10.5", proving she’s one of the team’s most dangerous athletes.

Freshman thrower Kiyari Ivey continued her impressive debut season with two strong finishes in the ring. She launched the discus 75’5”, earning second place, then came back in the javelin for a sixth place throw of 66’3”. Her power in the field is already turning heads, and she looks like a strong, foundational piece for the program moving forward.

In the field events, Anne Frances Kellogg cleared 4’0” in the high jump to secure third, while teammate Madison Williams followed in fifth. On the distance side, Emma Grace Stewart and Molly Lambert held steady in the 1600 meters, finishing in eighth and tenth, respectively.

The boys team delivered its own share of fireworks, chief among them Dylan Kolenovsky, who capped his day with a dominant first place discus victory at a massive 168’3”. The senior thrower added a second place finish in the javelin with a throw of 161’3’’, then completed his point-earning trifecta by taking third in the shot put at 43’5½’. Few athletes in the state can match the versatility of Kolenovsky and his level of across the board power.

Elsewhere in the field, Louis Barnett soared to third place in the pole vault, clearing 11’0”, and Aaron Washington posted a pair of big performances: third in the high jump at 5’4’ and ninth in the long jump.

The boys distance squad packed the 1600 and 3200 with solid efforts, highlighted by Tripp De Laureal’s dipping under five minutes for seventh in the mile. In the hurdles, Washington and John Perry IV notched eighth and ninth-place finishes in the 300 meters.

All told, with full results here, the Greenies walked away with several top finishes from athletes ranging from freshmen to seniors. This team’s athletes are at very different stages in their track careers, but all are defining the competitive heartbeat of the team.

On Thursday (3/19), Newman will host the annual J. Keefe Hecker Invitational Meet at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:30pm. Please come out and support the Greenies as they also celebrate the seniors on Senior Night!

Sauska Throws Complete-Game Shutout as Newman Defeats Haynes 4-0

On Wednesday, the baseball team turned strong pitching and disciplined execution into a 4-0 victory over Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies. Newman rode a dominant complete-game performance from Christian Sauska and a decisive third inning that created early separation.

After two scoreless innings, the Greenies broke through against the Yellow Jackets in the top of the third. Jack Falgoust reached base and helped ignite the rally, then Sauska lined a double to score the game’s first run. Collier Villere followed with an RBI single, and Atticus Lafleur added another run-producing plate appearance to push Newman ahead 3-0.

Newman continued to pressure the Yellow Jackets on the bases throughout the game. Villere stole two bases, Falgoust added two more, and Lafleur contributed another stolen base as Newman consistently forced defensive pressure.

The Greenies added an insurance run in the seventh inning to extend the margin to 4-0.

Sauska never allowed Haynes to establish a rhythm offensively. He struck out twelve, allowed only two hits, issued no walks, and threw 61 strikes in 92 pitches across seven complete innings.

On Thursday at 4pm, the Greenies begin a long home-stand with a game against Benjamin Franklin High School, followed by a game on Friday at 7pm against St. Charles Catholic High School. On Saturday at 3:30pm, the boys will host Bonnabel Magnet Academy High School. Good luck, Greenies!
