Baseball

The Diamond Greenies strung together another exciting week at the ballpark with 3 wins, a home opener, a grand slam, a game-saving double play, a second round-tripper, and lots of fun along the way.

Newman’s home opener was last Tuesday against the 4A Kenner Discovery Swamp Owls. The Greenies got off to a fast start when Peter Loop led off with a base knock to left field, followed by a base on balls for Jack Nesser, another single by Charles Wilson, and an RBI walk for Christian Sauska, which scored Loop. That left the bases loaded for Senior slugger Clayton Stevens, who took full advantage by driving a “no-doubter” into the trees over Avenger’s left field fence for the Grand Slam!

After the 5 run 1st inning, the Greenies never looked back, handily defeating the Swamp Owls 12-4. The Greenies collected 7 hits, with Loop going 3-3 with 2 RBIs, Sauska 2-4 with 2 RBIs, a base hit for Wilson, and Stevens’ epic four-bagger. Senior Brendan Blackburn got the win for the Greenies, with Junior Fulton Price and Sophomore Collier Villere combining for 4 innings of stellar relief.

Newman picked up another win on Wednesday against 3A Haynes Academy. Charles Wilson, who has been a beast at the plate to start the season, went 3-3 with 2 RBIs and once again Sauska had 2 hits (including a double) and 2 RBIs. Junior Tyler Zweifler was the winning pitcher, with Seniors Ethan Dulitz and Guy Guidroz adding three hitless innings out of the bullpen.

Thursday was the game of the week against the 5A Holy Cross Tigers, and Sauska was back on the mound for the Greenies. Newman took an early lead in the second inning when Blackburn drew a timely walk and Guidroz homered on a towering shot to left-center field.

The Greenies scratched across another run in the 3rd inning, after Loop, who singled, stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, was driven in by Sauska, who reached base on a Tiger error. In the top of the 5th, the Tigers closed the gap to 3-2, but the Greenies responded in the bottom half of the frame when Loop walked, Nesser had a base hit, Wilson sacrificed to advance both runners, and Sauska got on via a dropped third strike, scoring Loop. Newman took the 4-2 lead into the top of the 7th, when Sauska exited after 6 strong innings with 7 strikeouts on 120 pitches. Sophomore Jack “Goose” Falgoust came on in relief, walked the first Tiger batter, induced a pop fly for out #1, then gave up a double and another walk, loading the bases, and setting up the play of the game.

With the bases juiced and the game on the line, the Tiger four-hole crushed a hard ground ball straight up the middle of the field. Newman Second Baseman Jack Nesser moved quickly to his right, dove forward past 2nd base and gloved the hard hit ball. From the ground, Nesser shovel passed to Shortstop Clayton Stevens, who stepped on second and fired a rocket to First Baseman Jacob Dusansky, completing the double play and securing the Greenie victory.

Dusansky finishes off the 4-6-3 and celebrates on 1st, as closer Falgoust shuts the door on the Tigers and Greenies charge the field to celebrate! Photos by Derrick Hingle.

After winning 9 straight, the Diamond Greenies dropped a tough game to Slidell on Saturday. This week, 9-2 Newman faces 4A Belle Chasse on Thursday, 1A Central Catholic on Friday, and 5A Chalmette on Saturday (all games are at Chalmette High School).

Boys Basketball - State Champions!!

In the semifinal game of the Louisiana State Championship the number 1 seeded Newman Greenies faced Episcopal of Baton Rouge at Burton Arena in Lake Charles. Newman started the game on fire putting on a shooting clinic the first half of the game. Newman drained six three-pointers in the first quarter taking complete control of the game. Episcopal tried to play a box and 1 zone defense that was very short lived on the Newman point guard, RJ Livingston. Tayden Langdon hit the first four threes from beyond the arc before Livingston took his turn at the three point line by knocking down two more to lift the Greenies to a 24-9 lead. In the second quarter Episcopal went on an 8-2 run to cut into the Newman lead. The Greenies still controlled the game and held a 39-19 lead at the half. We removed all doubt in the third quarter, outscoring Episcopal 23-8. Chris Cenac, Jr. and Chris Birden, Jr. finished off with strong dunks in the paint, followed by four more Newman three-pointers including two by Birden that ballooned the lead to 64-27. This was a very dominant performance by the Newman team with five players scoring in double figures. Taydon Langdon led with 15 points including 5-of-7 from the three point line. Livingston finished with 13 points and seven assists. Birden scored 11 points, four rebounds and two assists. Cenac scored 11 points with nine rebounds, six assists and two blocks. Todd Jones Jr. had a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks.

On Friday, March 8th, Newman moved on to play the number 3 seed University Lab in the Division III select championship game. The championship game between Newman and University Lab started off as a back and forth contest. The lead changed eight times in the first quarter in front of the packed crowd of University Lab fans. The Greenies prepared all season by playing in away games on the road so they were confident and prepared for the task at hand.  Senior leader Todd Jones Jr. got into early foul trouble which slowed down Newman's inside game. The game was tight going into halftime but Newman did not fold under the pressure and excitement of the moment. Late in the third period, University Lab went on a nine point run taking a three point lead 42 - 39.  After a timeout called by Coach Livingston, Newman did not allow another field goal the rest of the way. University lab shot 0 for 10 from the field with three turnovers in the fourth quarter. Newman had three blocked shots in the fourth quarter and finished with eight. Newman went on an 18-0 scoring run dominating on both ends of the floor.

The top-seeded Newman won its third straight state title 59 - 46.  Chris Cenac, Jr., a 6-foot-10 junior, was named Outstanding Player of the game scoring 19 points with eight rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Sophomore point guard RJ Livingston scored 14 points with nine assists and was 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. Todd Jones, Jr added 10 points to secure the third straight title for Newman Greenies.

Golf (Boys & Girls)

Newman golf began its 2024 campaign recently, and is once again led by Coach Joe Giorlando.

The 2024 boys roster consists of:

Senior Niel Phillips (Team Captain)

Junior Colin Moffett

Junior John Baumgarten

Junior Jackson Mendler

Junior Rowan Dravid

Sophomore Damian Randolph

Sophomore Chase Hoffman

Sophomore Sam Elichman

8th Grader Parker Peeler

The 2024 Girls Roster consists of:

Junior Kaylie Hui

Junior Navis Allen

The boys team played their  first match of the season vs St. Charles Catholic (SCC) on March 11 at Lakewood GC. Five boys played and the four top scores counted for the match.  Newman shot a very solid 150 (+6) to SCC’s 147 (+3). Despite falling short to a good SCC squad, the total represents the lowest 9 hole team score in recent memory.   It’s an encouraging start to the season and demonstrates the depth that exists on this year’s squad.

The individual and team results were:

Niel Phillips         33 (-3)

Rowan Dravid    39 (+3)

DJ Randolph      39 (+3)

Parker Peeler      39 (+3)

Jax Mendler         41 (+5)

Total                     150 (+6)

Next up for the boys is a match vs Jesuit on March 18th at Lakewood Golf Club.

Lacrosse

On Wednesday night, the Greenies faced off under the lights at Tad Gormley stadium in City Park against their Orleans Parish archrival Jesuit Blue Jays. Newman Lacrosse stuck quickly, scoring the first goal of the contest within the first minute of the game. However, the Blue Jays retained their composure and the first quarter remained tightly contested. Unfortunately, the unforced errors that hindered their performance in the loss to Catholic High from the prior week continued to plague Newman for the remainder of the game. Jesuit rattled off 7 goals in the second quarter, and while our boys continued to fight the deficit simply became too much to pull out of. The Blue Jays ultimately got the better of the Greenies in a 15-7 win.

The shining star for Newman in an otherwise disappointing outing was again senior goalie McCall “Not In My House!” Engelhardt, who accounted for 16 saves in what could have otherwise been a more lopsided loss.

Newman Lacrosse travels to Metairie on Wednesday at 4:30pm to take on the upstart Raiders Lacrosse from Archbishop Rummel High School in a “Division 2” LHSLL matchup.

Softball

No Hitter Alert!
The Newman Greenies (2-0) no hit Crescent City Christian and earned the 18-0 victory last Thursday, thanks in part to an 11 run first inning.  The Newman Greenies then scored seven more runs in the bottom of the second inning to close out the offensive explosion. The 2-0 Greenies have out scored their 1st two opponents 37-2 to begin the season.

Sophomore Sydney Able started the game for the Greenies and earned her 1st win of the season. Able didn’t give up a hit or a run in her two innings on the mound, striking out 3. Senior Emma Passler came in to close out the game with 3 strike outs.

Top hitters for the game were Jesse Lambert (.750), Maddie Huber (1,000), Sydney Able (1,000), Felicity Drake (.667), Maggie Mills (1,000) and Madison Able (1,000). Each collecting one hit and driving in multiple runs for the Newman Greenies.

The Newman Greenies have a very competitive week ahead as the team will play 4 games against tough competition starting on Monday with the NOLA Science & Math Academy (4:30pm). Other games this week are Wednesday, March 13 at Ursuline (4:00pm) Thursday, March 14 at Willow (4:00pm) and Saturday, March 16th at St. Martin’s (11:00am). The girls would love to see you in the stands and help cheer them on as they battle these teams on the diamond!
