Newman Boys Basketball Advances Deep Into the Playoffs with Young Core

With a boys basketball roster primarily composed of young and inexperienced players, many of whom had never competed at this level, expectations were tempered. Instead of shying away from the challenge, however, the Greenies embraced it, proving their resilience and talent by securing a strong spot in the playoffs and making a remarkable run to the quarterfinals.

Finishing the season with an impressive 22 wins, Newman showcased a level of growth and determination that exceeded expectations. Despite the challenges of adjusting to varsity competition, the team displayed remarkable chemistry and a willingness to learn, a testament to the players’ work ethic and the coaching staff’s ability to develop young talent.

Throughout the season, the Greenies relied on their grit and athleticism, competing against more experienced teams and never backing down. Their ability to adapt and improve as the season progressed was evident in their deep playoff run. Making it to the quarterfinals is no small feat, especially for a squad still finding its footing in high-stakes competition.

After earning a bye in the first round and beating Pope John Paul II Catholic High School in the second round, the boys fell just short, 65-57, against Rosepine High School in the quarterfinals. Down by six with two minutes to go in the game, PJ Foster ripped the ball away from a Rosepine wing and passed it to point guard RJ Livingston, who drove the ball down the court and kicked it out to Sachin Dasa in the corner. The senior shooting guard buried the three-pointer to make it a one-possession game. Unfortunately, the Eagles were able to quell the Newman comeback in the final sixty seconds and advance to the semifinals.

Kudos to the players for stepping up and proving that age and experience don’t define success. Credit is also due to the coaching staff for their leadership, game planning, and commitment to building a strong foundation for the future. With a season like this one under their belts, the Greenies have set the stage for even greater accomplishments in the years ahead.

While this season may be over, Newman has given fans plenty to be excited about. This young core now has playoff experience and a hunger to achieve even more. With continued development and the same relentless mentality, the Greenies are well on their way to becoming a powerhouse in the seasons to come. This is just the beginning.
