Newman Swag Night

The lacrosse team moms have organized a Mom’s Nite & Swag Party for tonight, Thursday, January 9, at 5:30pm at the Landry home, 1328 Nashville Avenue, with local vendors selling their green and white merchandise. The event is open to everyone, especially those with athletes participating in a spring sport. Gear up here in the New Year!

Girls Basketball

The girls varsity basketball team continues to battle with player injuries but still had some impressive performances in the Gulf Shores Beach Bash tournament at the end of December. A record number of parents made the trip to Gulf Shores for this tournament this year, so support for the Greenies in the stands was strong. Between games, the team enjoyed sharing a condo on the beach with their coaches, with the girls preparing many of the meals.

On December 27, the varsity team lost 41-65 to the Makos of Orange Beach High School. The score remained close throughout the first half, but the Greenies were unable to jump the sharks in the second half. Junior Madison Williams led the team with 16 points, including two three-pointers. Senior Kasia Wells scored 13 points, including three three-pointers. The other players to score were senior Stella Joyce, junior Amari Jones, freshman Breigha Leal, and eighth grader Piper Christian.

On December 28, the varsity team lost to Gulf Shores High School 22 to 56. It was a tight first quarter, but the Dolphins pulled ahead in the second quarter and maintained that lead through the end of the game. Williams scored 16 of the 22 points, and Christian and Joyce also made baskets.

On December 30, the varsity team played Seymour High School from Seymour, Tennessee, losing 32 to 66. For the third game in a row, Williams led the team by scoring 16 points. Wells scored 6 points, Joyce added 4 points, and Jones and Christian each scored a three-pointer.

The JV team also competed in the Gulf Shores Beach Bash tournament, playing well but losing games to Gulfport High School, St. Paul’s Catholic School of Covington, and Orange Beach High School.

This week, the varsity team played an away game on Tuesday (1/7) at 5:00pm against the Academy of Our Lady School in Marrero, which will be covered in next week’s report. This afternoon (1/9), the girls play against West Jefferson High School at 5:30pm in the Palaestra. And tomorrow (1/10) at 6:00pm, the team plays an away game against Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy. Go Greenies!

Boys Basketball

Newman Boys Basketball Competes in the Sunkist Tournament, Finishing in 4th Place

The Acadiana Advocate, December 27, 2024

The varsity boys basketball team recently participated in the prestigious Sunkist Shootout tournament held at St. Thomas More Catholic High School. In a competitive field filled with talented teams, the Greenies demonstrated resilience and skill, ultimately finishing with a 2-2 record to secure 4th place in the tournament. Known for its competitive atmosphere and high-level matchups, the tournament brought together some of the best high school basketball programs in the region. Held annually in Lafayette, the event serves as an excellent early-season opportunity for teams to gauge their performance and test their abilities against a diverse range of opponents.

The Acadiana Advocate, December 27, 2024

This year’s edition of the tournament featured intense action, and the Greenies faced off against teams that challenged them on both ends of the court. Though they experienced some ups and downs, their balanced play and strong team dynamic were evident in every game. RJ Livingston ‘26 was honored with making the Sunkist All-Tournament team.

During the action-packed holiday season, the Greenies played six games in 11 days. After returning from Lafayette, the Greenies played in the local Sugar Bowl tournament just after New Year’s, securing a win against East Iberville High School, but falling short in a hard fault battle against Holy Cross High School.

Head Coach Randy Livingston provided a state of the season: “We are currently a 10-4 record with a hectic January schedule ahead. The coaching staff could not be more proud of this group. We started the season with only two experienced varsity players and a ton of players contributing to the varsity for the first time in their basketball careers. The 13 student-athletes have competed and believed in each other and the staff, continue to believe in one another, and know to just be ready when they get their chance. Everyone has played and contributed this season to date. Many people just believe we won with talent over the past five years, but our program is built on a strong culture and development of young men on and off the basketball court. We pride ourselves in teaching and playing the game the right way. We will continue our style of basketball and put our best foot forward for the remainder of the season.”

The Greenies (10-4) will have a full week ahead of conditioning and practices to prepare them for their next match up against New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics School on January 14. In the meantime, the JV boys will compete in weekend exhibition games at Metairie Park Country Day School at 9:00am and 10:30am. Go Greenies!

Girls Soccer

The girls soccer season switched into high gear after exams, featuring nine varsity matches in a three-week span. On December 20, the Greenies faced Division I powerhouse Lafayette High School (14-1-1) at home on Varsity Sports Now here. After a scoreless first half, Catherine Lapeyre was able to score on a rebound from the Mighty Lions keeper. Less than a minute later, a long strike from winger Avery Summerour gave the Greenies an insurance goal in the impressive 2-0 win.

The next morning, the Greenies lined up against Youngsville’s Southside High School in another home match on VSN here. In a clean sheet for goalkeepers Bizzie Guy and CeCe Pinkerton, their third of the young season, the Greenies prevailed 3-0 with two goals from Lili Arjmand and another score from Laperye.

On Monday, December 23, the Greenies played a highly-anticipated match against their Uptown rivals, Academy of the Sacred Heart, on a windy afternoon at Pan American Stadium. In the 22nd minute, Summerour opened the scoring against the then-undefeated Cardinals with an untouched corner kick goal, commonly known as an Olimpico. Later in the first half, Kingsland LeBourgeois took a brilliant pass from Lapeyre into the box and slotted a beauty past the Cardinals keeper to double the score.

The Cardinals clawed back a goal on a corner kick in the second half to make it 2-1, but Pinkerton’s diving save on a fast-break denied the speedy Cardinals left winger a goal in the 51st minute. The Greenies scrappy defense otherwise held firm, giving Newman a big win against Sacred Heart after settling for two draws and a loss in the last three matchups.

After logging a number of productive training sessions during the holiday week, the girls headed to Baton Rouge on December 30 for a showdown with D-I power ranking leader St. Joseph’s Academy (12-1-1). The Redstickers scored an early goal, but the Greenies answered with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead. Late in the second half, however, the relentless St. Joseph’s attacks shown here bore fruit and the Redstickers were able to escape with a 3-2 win.

On January 2, Newman was back home against a strong side from Archbishop Hannan High School (7-2-5) on VSN here. In just the 15th minute, Arjmand chipped a long pass from center back Claire Charpentier over the keeper to make it 1-0.

In the second half, a deflection off the crossbar from a header off a corner kick landed to Alyse Dulitz, who brought the ball down with her shoulder and knocked the ball past the keeper with her left foot. Minutes later, Summerour launched another trademark long and high rocket over the Hawks keeper into the net from distance, and the Greenies were able to cruise to a 3-0 victory.

Last Saturday (1/4), the girls were back in Baton Rouge against University Laboratory School (8-2-3) on VSN here. After a scoreless first half, Newman’s Lapeyre bodied in a cross from Summerour at the post for her fifth goal of the season. The Greenies held the lead until the 72nd minute, when the Cubs center back was able to redirect a long throw in into the box with a nice header to tie it up, ultimately giving the Greenies their second draw of the season.

This week, the girls have played three home district matches, including 8-0 wins against Riverside Academy and St. Martin’s Episcopal School and a 4-0 win last night against St. Charles Catholic High School. With the victories, the Greenies improved their record to 10-2-2, and 4-0 in district play, setting up a showdown for the District 9-IV championship against Metairie Park Country Day School (5-5-3) next week.

This Saturday morning (1/11), the girls will play an away match against Benjamin Franklin High School (9-8-0), winners of five straight. Kickoff is set for 9am.

Boys Soccer

The boys varsity soccer team continued their perfect season with a pair of holiday road victories against two strong Division III opponents, Archbishop Shaw High School and University Laboratory School. Both teams promised to be a test for the boys and the games did not disappoint. Once again, the Greenies stepped up and faced the challenges head-on.

In the match against Shaw in Marrero, winger Rylan Claverie’s hat trick and assist led the way in a 5-1 victory for the Greenies. Striker Cole Spady added a pair of goals, giving him a team-leading 24 goals on the season. Paul Richard assisted on two of the goals and Amar Walia assisted on another. With the exception of a Shaw goal from an uncharacteristic passing mistake, the score reflected the nature and quality of the game. Thanks to everyone who made the journey to the Westbank to support the boys.

In Baton Rouge against U High last weekend on VSN here, the Greenies faced the reigning and undefeated (10-0-2) Division III state champions with grit and determination. At halftime, the game was tied and with momentum for the Greenies, there was a sense the Cubs could be taken down. In a dominating whirlwind of a second half, which featured two hat tricks by Spady and Richard, including a double-header beauty by the latter, victory was assured and hard won through discipline and perseverance. It was a beautiful win for the boys.

Varsity Sports Now, January 4, 2024

On Thursday (1/9) at 7pm, the Greenies (13-0) will host D-I’s St. Paul’s Catholic School (7-4-1) in what should be a very tough matchup. On Saturday (1/11), the boys will play in the tail end of a double header with the girls against cross-town rival Benjamin Franklin High School (8-3-1). Go Greenies!
