Boys Basketball

In the first game of the 13th Annual Sugar Bowl Prep Classic, the Greenies faced Trinity High School from Kentucky in the National bracket. The game started off slow offensively for both teams.  Trinity hit some outside shots in the 2nd half that played a big role in the outcome of the game. Final score – Trinity 47, Newman 36.

In the second game, Newman faced Charlotte High School of Florida in a tough physical match-up. The energy and pressure of the Newman defense set the tone for the game. The size of the Greenies in a high low game with our bigs created a lot of scoring opportunities. We controlled every facet of the game throughout all four quarters leading to a big win. Final score - Newman 66 Charlotte 51.

In the final game against John Curtis Christian High School, the gym was packed with spectators to watch these two local teams compete. The game started with both teams trading shots and full court pressure. The toughness of Curtis’s quick guards challenged the Greenies on defense, but Newman adjusted well. John Curtis fought hard, but Newman’s size and length proved to be too much for them to overcome. Newman dominated offensively from the inside scoring at will. Defensively Newman forced Curtis to shoot jump shots turning them into a one-dimensional team. The Greenies took control of the game in the third period and never looked back. Final score – Newman 46, John Curtis 33.

Go Greenies!

Boys Soccer

On Saturday afternoon, the varsity boys hosted Louisiana State University Laboratory School (U-High) (6-1-5) in a sunny girls-boys doubleheader on VSN here.  Eager for redemption after last year’s 3-1 loss in Baton Rouge, the Newman boys jumped on the Cubs early.  In just the 9th minute, Paul Richard passed the ball across the midfield to George Villere, who beat his defender and shot the ball back across his body into the lower left corner of the goal for the opening score.  Two minutes later, left winger Rylan Claverie collected a pass from Luke Mobley, muscled his opponent off the ball and served a beauty into the box for Richard, whose finishing flick doubled the lead.  Defender Alex Dulitz added a third goal in the 22nd minute with a strong header after breaking free on a well-placed corner kick from Claverie.  From there, the Greenies protected the 3-0 lead, with midfielders Mobley and Amar Walia controlling the pace and goalkeeper Journey Manson’s back-to-back saves from close range in the second half preserving the clean sheet and statement win for the Greenies.

Following the varsity game, the JV boys took on a JV squad from The Willow School New Orleans.  Though scoreless at halftime, and despite strong ball movement and defensive efforts from Veer Walia, Atticus LaFleur, Roan Plymale and Nicholas Coffin, the Lions managed to net two goals in the second half, one from a cross and another from a through ball, to best the junior Greenies 2-0.

  • Wednesday (1/10), 7pm: JV v. Ben Franklin High School (Away)

Girls Soccer

The Newman varsity girls (9-0-1) trained extensively over the holiday break in anticipation for their annual Uptown rivalry game on Tuesday (1/2) against Academy of the Sacred Heart (10-1-3).  Before a packed house at Michael Lupin Field, both teams played hard in a fast-paced back-and-forth match.  As always, the game pitted long-time friends and club teammates against each other, but this year, as reported by NOLA.com here, the game featured one of the Greenie senior captains, Hannah Plaisance, and her sophomore sister Genevieve Plaisance, playing against their father, Cardinals coach Michael Plaisance.  Though the match featured several scoring opportunities, neither team was able to deliver a goal and the game ended 0-0, the second draw between the squads in as many years.

On Thursday (1/4), the junior varsity girls traveled to Baton Rouge to challenge Parkview Baptist School’s JV squad.  The Eagles scored early and led much of the game before adding two insurance goals at the very end of the match to win 3-0.

On Saturday (1/6), the varsity girls were back in action on VSN here against Louisiana State University Laboratory School (U-High) (8-1-1).  In only the 7th minute, the Cubs left back launched a long ball from well across the center line to about 30 yards away from goal.  After a contested header, the ball darted past the last Newman defender and right to the feet of the U-High right winger, who lined up wide and just inside the penalty area to fire a perfect shot into the left corner for the first and only goal of the match.  Though the Greenies had numerous opportunities to equalize, the Cubs’ defense managed to keep a clean sheet and return to Baton Rouge with their 9th win of the season.  The defeat was the first for the Greenies since losing away to Mandeville High School on December 17, 2022, and the first home loss since November 29, 2022, when they lost with an identical score to Archbishop Hannan High School.

On Wednesday (1/10), the varsity girls head to Baton Rouge for a weather-delayed match against Parkview Baptist High School and with designs to begin a new streak of undefeated matches.  Also on Wednesday, the junior varsity girls will head to Mandeville for one of its final matches of the season.  On Saturday, the JV girls will play in junior varsity tournament in Houma and the varsity girls will host Ben Franklin High School at 11am as part of a double header with the varsity boys.
