Many of the parents also traveled the beach to cheer for the Greenies during the games. After the first game, everyone had a great night at The Hangout in Gulf Shores:

On December 23, in the annual green and red match against Academy of the Sacred Heart, the Cardinals edged the Greenies 1-0 in a tightly contested match on Varsity Sports Now here. Both teams battled throughout, with strong defensive play and limited scoring chances keeping the game close. Sacred Heart was able to find the decisive goal late with a long shot from distance. Despite Newman’s persistent pressure and effort until the final whistle, the score held, resulting in a tough loss for Newman.
A few days later (12/27), Newman traveled to Geismar to face Dutchtown High School and battled through a scoreless first half on the road. Both teams created chances, but strong defensive play and goalkeeping kept the match level heading into halftime. The Greenies broke through 23 minutes into the second half with an outstanding goal by CC Loerzel, shifting the momentum firmly in Newman’s favor. Loerzel continued to dominate, delivering two excellent assists to Jane Summerour, who finished both opportunities to seal the result. Newman closed out the match confidently for an impressive 3–0 road victory.
Just before the New Year, on December 30, the girls traveled to Thibodaux for another match against some Cardinals, these from E.D. White Catholic High School. E.D. White took control early, scoring two goals in the first half to build a 2–0 lead at the break. Newman regrouped in the second half and broke through about 20 minutes in when Alyse Dulitz was fouled in the box. Goalkeeper Bizzie Guy came up took the penalty kick for a goal, cutting the deficit to one. Despite sustained effort late, Newman was unable to find the equalizer and fell 2–1.

Boys Soccer
On December 22, the boys played a tough match at home against a scrappy side from Division I’s East Jefferson High School on Varsity Sports Now here. The Greenies thought they had scored on the Warriors in the 23rd minute, when Atticus Lafleur and Reed Sanford combined to send the ball into the back of the net. However, one of the Newman attackers was deemed offside and the goal was disallowed.

Varsity Sport Now, December 22, 2025
Both teams fought hard in the second half, but neither was able to score and the match ended in a 0-0 draw. With the tie, boys remained undefeated but failed to prevail in a match for the first time all season.
On December 27, the Greenies headed to Metairie for another difficult matchup, this time against Division II’s Archbishop Rummel High School (6-4-3). With goals scored by the home team midway through the first half and immediately after halftime, along with a stifling defense, the Raiders prevailed by the score of 2-0. With the win, Rummel handed Newman its first loss since the Greenies lost on penalty kicks in a semi-final game in February 2024, ending an incredible streak of 31 contests and 679 days without a loss.
Over the weekend, the boys bounced back strong with a resounding 3-0 victory over Archbishop Hannan High School (6-4-1). Team captain and midfielder Jake Isenberg led the team with two goals against the Hawks, and freshman Weston Beevers scored one as well. For his part, Beevers worked the ball in into the area from the left wing, and after a shot by striker Joe Morris, capitalized on the goalkeeper’s deflection with a blast from point-blank range into the back of the net.

Strong defense and aerial headers by center backs Atticus Lafleur and Nick Coffin, along with nice saves by goalkeeper Henry Houghton, preserved the shutout.
With the win, the Greenies improved to 7-1-1 on the season. They will travel back to Covington this afternoon (1/6) for an away match against Division I titans St. Paul’s Catholic School (7-3-1). On Thursday (1/8) at 7pm, the boys will host Walter L. Cohen High School (7-2-1) for a match that will likely decide the district championship. Good luck, Greenies!
