Girls Basketball

While many Newman sports were cancelled last week due to the invasion of snowmen and snow angels, the girls basketball team managed to dribble around the remaining ice and played some great games.

On Friday (1/24), the team celebrated Senior Night and honored seniors Audrey Bagot, Kasia Wells, Ava Azzano, Stella Joyce, and team manager Brett Beasley. We thank all of them for their team spirit and excellence.

After the ceremony, the varsity team played longtime rival Metairie Park Country Day School. Just like earlier in the week when it seemed that the snowfall would never end, the dominance of the Greenies was seemingly without limits, and the team defeated the Cajuns 42-9. Eighth grader Piper Christian led the team with 17 points, which included 3 three-pointers. Senior Kasia Wells added 9 points, and also making baskets were seniors Bagot and Joyce, juniors Amari Jones and Sophia Mills, and freshman Breigha Leal. The victory was the team’s tenth win in a row in 2025.

Last Saturday (1/25), the JV team participated in the Newman JV tournament. The team had a dominant performance against Benjamin Franklin High School. And while the Greenies ended up with the short end of the stick when they battled the Redstickers of St. Joseph's Academy of Baton Rouge, they played a very competitive game against that strong team.

This Friday (1/31), the team will play an away game against the Academy of the Sacred Heart. The JV team goes first at 4:00, playing their last game of the 2024-25 season. The varsity game follows.

The girls varsity basketball team is looking forward to playing in the district tournament next week with three games at home on Tuesday (2/4), Thursday (2/6) and Friday (2/7). Good luck Greenies!

Boys Soccer

On Sunday (1/26), with eight inches of snow finally cleared from the field, the soccer varsity boys team was back in action, fighting for the district title against Walter L. Cohen High School (13-5-1) on VSN here. After the game, the school honored the impressive class of 11 senior soccer boys, including Jackson Burns, Rylan Claverie, Rowan Dravid, Alex Dulitz, Charlie Guy, Jack Hance, Jake Lonseth, Paul Richard, Cole Spady, George Villere, and Amar Walia, in a special Senior Day celebration.

The match showcased the seniors as well. In the 15th minute, goalkeeper-turned-striker Guy led off the scoring with a header from a corner kick from Walia. Eight minutes later, Guy doubled his goal tally for the season with a great finish after an exciting run and terrific cross by Dulitz.

In the 34th minute, Burns made it 3-0, scoring his fourth goal of the season from a left-footed assist by Spady.

Just before halftime, Spady recovered a deflection off his own shot and passed it over to Claverie, who drilled the ball into the top left hand corner. The score was his 20th goal of the season and remarkably, the 96th goal of his high school career.

In the second half, after a hard foul on Claverie in the box, center back Lonseth stepped to the spot and buried the penalty kick for his first goal of the season.

With Spady adding a final goal to make it 6-0, his 32nd score of the year, the Greenies finished the regular season as district champions and the top seed in Division IV, with an undefeated record of 18-0-1.

Now in the the state playoffs, the Greenies will host Union Parish High School (3-12) from Farmerville in the first round, this Friday (1/31), at 4pm. Go Greenies!

Boys Basketball

Greenies Boys Basketball Team Looks to Rebound After Historic Snowstorm Break

After an unprecedented snowstorm brought New Orleans to a standstill, the boys basketball team is eager to get back to business. The unexpected winter weather disrupted the team’s regular schedule and practice routines, but the Greenies are determined to pick up where they left off. With three critical matchups ahead, the team is focused on ending the season strong and building momentum for the postseason.

Greenies Return to Action to Face Terrebonne High School

The Greenies kick off their return to the court today at 6pm in an away game against Terrebonne High School. With little time to shake off the rust from the unexpected break, this game will be crucial for the team to regain their rhythm. The Tigers present a solid challenge, and the Greenies will need to come out with energy and focus to secure the win. The coaching staff has emphasized the importance of starting strong to set the tone for the remainder of the week.

Senior Night Showdown Against Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies

Next, the Greenies will shift their attention to Friday, January 31, a special night on their calendar: Senior Night in the Palaestra against Haynes Academy. This emotional evening will honor the contributions and leadership of the team’s senior players, Sachin Dasa, Copeland Bowen, Dre Davis, John Baumgarten, and PJ Foster, all having been instrumental in the Greenies’ success this season. The team is looking to channel that energy into a strong performance as we celebrate the seniors’ final regular season home game. Though the Yellow Jackets won’t make it easy and will look to spoil the festivities! Join us in celebrating our seniors at halftime; tip-off is at 7pm.

Highly Anticipated Matchup With Warren Easton High School

The busy week culminates in a highly anticipated clash in Mid-City against Warren Easton on Saturday (2/1) at 5pm. This matchup promises to be an exciting and competitive game, with both teams boasting talent and ambition. Warren Easton has an intense student section and the Eagles fans have been working hard all season long, so the Greenies will need to be at their best to secure a victory. Fans are expecting a packed house for what could be one of the most thrilling games of season. Go Greenies!

Girls Soccer

Last night, the varsity girls soccer team returned to play after the week-long arctic freeze out, playing their final regular season game at home on VSN here against Dutchtown High School (6-7-2). After eighty minutes of exciting back and forth with the Griffins, the teams were still scoreless, resulting in a scoreless draw. With this, their third draw of the season, the Greenies finished the regular season at 12-3-3, and ended up a strong second in the Division IV power rankings, and a unanimous first in the coaches’ poll.

The match will also be Senior Night, honoring the team’s remarkable seven seniors, and hopefully a springboard for the girls in their quest for a third straight state championship title. Kickoff is set for 5:30pm. Come out and show your support for the Greenies and their accomplished seniors!
