Boys Soccer

On Senior Night (1/22) last week, the boys soccer team (9-3-2) hosted Metairie Park Country Day School (10-4-1) on Varsity Sports Now here and honored its eleven seniors, including captains Jackson Fitzpatrick, Jake Isenberg, and Will Pinkerton, along with Jai Bansal, Archie Casbarian, Nicholas Coffin, Jackson Dirks, Thomas Gershanik, Chase Hoffman, Henry Houghton, and Daniel Taylor.

On a beautiful night that preceded the current wintry conditions, Isenberg fielded a pass in the 20th minute at the top of the penalty area from fellow midfielder Roan Plymale and ripped a left-footed shot past the Cajuns keeper for the Greenies’ first score of the night.

Five minutes later, Veer Walia served a corner kick into the box for fellow junior Atticus Lafleur to run on and hammer a header into the net to double the score. Then midway through the second half, after a hard foul on Bansal, Walia served up another beauty from the corner that was headed in with authority by Pinkerton to make it 3-0.

For the remainder of the match, the Greenies seniors took over and ran the show, preserving the shutout and delighting the spirited home crowd.

Earlier, on Tuesday (11/20), the boys had faced off at home against Division I powerhouse Brother Martin High School (15-2-1). Early in the first half, the Greenies lost a player to a red card for a tackle that denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity and was one man short the rest of the way. The Greenies surrendered a goal shortly thereafter, but maintained their composure and stayed focused, even tying the game with a penalty kick by Jake Isenberg right before halftime. With about 11 minutes remaining, though, despite strong play and four saves by goalkeeper Archie Casbarian, the Crusaders broke through with a game winning rocket into the top left-hand corner and ultimately prevailed 2-1.

Tonight (1/27), the boys are scheduled to play in a home doubleheader with the girls against Northlake Christian School in a battle between the top two power-ranked teams in Division IV. Kickoff is set for 7pm.

On Saturday (1/31) at 2pm, the boys will take on Northshore High School (11-5-1) in Slidell, and then on Monday (2/2) at 7pm conclude their regular season with a rescheduled home match against University Laboratory School.

Indoor Track and Field

Newman Track Athletes Charging Towards State!

The indoor track and field team is building serious momentum as the Indoor State Championships on February 21 approach.

As of the conclusion of the LSU High School Qualifying Meet on Saturday, multiple Greenies are sitting in qualifying positions to compete in the Championship Meet , which has limited entries of 16 athletes in the 60m dash and hurdles, and only twelve spots in all other events, relays, and field events.

Logan DeGruy is doubling up in distance, sitting currently in fifth in the 800m and seventh in the 1600m races. DeGruy also runs on the 4x800 relay team with Asher McCoul, Tripp de Laureal, and Michael Madigan that is now seeded in 10th place. Dylan Kolenovsky has secured his spot in the shot put, currently in third place, with another opportunity to move up in the rankings at the next meet on February 7.

Kolenovsky also anchors the 4x200 relay team, along with Julian DeGruy, Cyrus Arjmand, and Kai Oyemade. That squad is just barely outside the 12-team window, currently in 13th place.

For the girls team, Jada Recasner is leading the team with four qualifying events: eighth in 60m dash (with a new school record time of 8.26), fourth in 60m hurdles, tenth in long jump, and seventh in the triple jump. Remi Cousin joins Recasner on the qualifying list of 60m hurdlers in fifth place, and this duo could definitely provide a one-two punch in the state meet. Madelyn Argote is fifth in the 400m and with another opportunity, she is sure to move up in the rankings.

The girls relay teams are both on their respective qualifying lists with a twelfth place standing in the 4x200 relay team consisting of Heidi Smith, Madelyn Argote, Anne Kellogg and Eleanor Wise. The 4x800 relay is currently in seventh place with Elise Barnett, Emma Grace Stewart, Sophie Nguyen and Seine Gala looking to secure their place at the state meet.

February is going to be an exciting month as the Greenies are qualifying and setting themselves up to provide some serious competition. Momentum is building, records are falling, rankings are rising and these Newman athletes are in position to do something really special this season. #GreeniesRun #GoGreenies

Madison Williams was responsible for an amazing 21 points, which included two three-pointers. Piper Christian scored 14 points, Jessica Taranto had 11 points, Katherine Aucoin tallied 10 points, Amari Jones and Jordin Daniels both scored 6 points, and Kiyari Ivey and Sophia Mills also made baskets. The next day (1/21), the team played an away game at Riverdale High School. Although the final score of 62-67 wasn’t what the team was seeking, the team still played very well. Williams and Christian led the scoring effort with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Daniels and Taranto added another 10 and 8 points to the final score, while baskets were also made by Mills and Jones.

The team is now entering the final three weeks of the regular season and hopes to build upon the success from last week. This afternoon at 5pm at home in the Palaestra, the girls will battle neighborhood rival Academy of the Sacred Heart. Looking ahead, the team will participate in the district tournament, hosted by Metairie Park Country Day School, starting Thursday, February 5.
