Boys Soccer

On Thursday (1/18), in the rain at Lafreniere Park, the Newman varsity boys took on Jesuit High School of New Orleans (11-1-2), the top D-1 team in the LHSAA power rankings.  The game was scoreless until late in the first half, when the Jesuit keeper launched a deep punt the Greenies failed to clear and a Blue Jays midfielder was able to head the ball forward to three attacking teammates.  The first attacker’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Journey Manson, but the ball rebounded to the Jesuit right winger, who struck a ball that bounced not once but twice off the crossbar and finally landed to the left winger at the goal line for a close range header goal and ultimately the game winner.  Though Manson and center backs Jake Lonseth and Alex Dulitz played very well to keep Jesuit scoreless for the remainder, the Blue Jays defense was equal to the task and the game ended with a 1-0 victory to the D-1 favorites.

On Saturday (1/20), the Greenies were back in action at home on VSN (click here to watch the replay) against Parkview Baptist School (D-3) (8-2-4).  In the 10th minute of the sunny and windy match, a direct kick into the box from Luke Mobley was headed by an Eagles defender, but it settled at the feet of a cutting Rylan Claverie, whose shot to the goalkeeper’s right gave the Greenies a 1-0 lead.  As time was expiring in the first half, however, a free kick from midfield by the Greenies’ keeper was intercepted by the Parkview Baptist striker, who saw the empty net and launched a wind-backed prayer from 45 yards out to even the score.  Coming out in the second half, the Greenies were determined to outplay the visitors, now attacking with the favorable wind.  In just the third minute after the break, left back Jake Isenberg sent a ball into the area that was deflected by a defender over to freshman Veer Walia on the right wing.  Walia’s shot was blocked by the keeper but a racing Claverie was there for an easy tap in finish to retake the lead and give Claverie his team-leading 21st goal of the season.  From there, the Greenies played with confidence and limited the Eagles’ opportunities, ultimately shutting them down and securing the impressive 2-1 win.

The boys now head into the final four games of the regular season, as the fifth-ranked team in the D-4 power rankings.  Tonight (1/23) at 7pm, the Greenies will host Brother Martin High School (D-1).  On Thursday night (1/25) at 7pm, the boys will play last year’s district champion, Metairie Park Country Day School (D-4), in a Senior Night doubleheader with the girls that will determine the district championships.  On Saturday (1/27), the boys will play in an Uptown Derby at The Willow School New Orleans, the top power ranked team in D-2.  On Monday (1/29), the boys will finish the demanding regular season at home at 6pm against Dutchtown High School, with the playoffs to follow.

Admission for the home games is free for Newman faculty, staff and students, and others can purchase tickets for $5 here.

Girls Soccer

On Thursday (1/18), the varsity girls were home in a match against District 9-IV rival Louise S. McGehee School (6-7-2), broadcast on VSN here and covered by NOLA.com here.  Early in the match, senior co-captain Hannah Plaisance sent a ball through the defender’s legs that quickly skipped along the wet turf and past the Hawks’ goalkeeper for the opening score.  Right after halftime, the Greenies doubled the lead with a 30-yard blast from Lili Arjmand.  With their hopes of a district title in jeopardy,  the McGehee girls continued to play very hard, even cutting the lead to one in the 61st minute with a long-range shot from near the top of the box.  Despite the playoff-like intensity, however, the Greenies were able to regain their composure and secure the important 2-1 district win.

On Thursday (1/25), the girls will play their final district match of the season, against Metairie Park Country Day School (6-8-1), in a Senior Night doubleheader with the boys, hoping to secure the district title with a win or a draw against the Cajuns.  On Saturday (1/27), the girls will head to Geismar to play Dutchtown High School (12-5-3) and will be back home at 4pm on Monday for the regular season finale against formidable Mandeville High School (16-5-5).
