Boys Soccer
Last Tuesday (1/14), the varsity boys took their perfect 15-0 record to Lafreniere Park in Metairie for a hotly contested match with D-I’s Brother Martin High School (13-3-4). Although Brother Martin had not lost since early December, the Greenies dominated possession and defended well in vanquishing the Crusaders 4-0. Goalkeeper Charlie Guy logged another clean sheet and entertaining goals came from Cole Spady (2), Rowan Dravid and Paul Richard.

On Thursday evening (1/16), the varsity boys ventured a few blocks over for its annual Uptown Derby against The Willow School (14-2-1), the two-time defending champions of Division III. In the first half, center back Alex Dulitz scurried to the goal line behind the goalkeeper and valiantly saved a strike on target to keep the game scoreless. Early in the second half, however, the Lions took the lead on a free kick after a hard charge on the leaping goalkeeper that the referee ultimately deemed incidental contact. After some desperate back and forth, with the Greenies’ undefeated season on the line and time running out, defender Will Pinkerton lofted a long free kick from midfield into the penalty area, which Cole Spady was able to head past the keeper for a thrilling equalizer. The final whistle quickly followed, leaving both teams with a hard-fought draw.

On Saturday (1/18), the varsity boys played their third straight away game, this one on a sunny afternoon at Metairie Park Country Day School. In a dominating performance against the Cajuns, the Greenies got two goals each from George Villere and Rylan Claverie and single scores from Pinkerton, Amar Walia, Atticus LaFleur, and Hamilton Houghton. Midfielder Jake Isenberg contributed two assists, as did Claverie, increasing his team-leading assist count to 13. With the 8-0 victory, which reached the maximum goal differential late in the second half, the Greenies improved their incredible record to 17-0-1.
Next up, the boys are set to compete at home on Friday night (1/24) at 6pm for the district title in a snow-rescheduled Senior Night match against a strong side from Walter L. Cohen High School (13-4). All are encouraged to show up and celebrate the exceptional eleven Newman senior boys! Finally, on Monday night (1/27), the boys will host Jesuit High School (16-0-1) in another snow-rescheduled match to conclude the regular season.

On Tuesday (1/14), the Newman varsity girls (10-2-2) played a key showdown at Pan American Stadium against D-I’s St. Mary’s Dominican High School (13-8-2). After Lili Arjmand’s banger gave the Greenies the lead, defending midfielder Sara Cordova wove through traffic and slotted the ball into the far right corner to double the lead.

Avery Summerour added a third goal with a long strike from distance, and late in the match, Markie Batten’s strong finish from the right wing after a deflection from a deep shot by Sarah Gibbs Smallpage made it 4-0. With the win, the Greenies earned their eleventh win of the season.

On Thursday (1/16) evening, the Greenies headed across the lake to play St. Scholastica Academy (10-2-5) in Covington. A very early goal by the Doves put the Greenies in a hole, but the girls were able to equalize with a goal of their own from Arjmand in the second half. Unfortunately, the Doves took the lead for good with a strong shot late in the game, handing the Greenies only their third loss of the season.
Over the weekend, in a double header with the boys, the varsity girls quickly rebounded and easily dispatched district opponent Metairie Park Country Day by the score of 5-1. First half goals by Arjmand and Smallpage were followed in the second half by scores from Cordova, Sydney Gallagher, and Brooke Montano. With the victory, the girls completed a perfect run of their five district games, outscoring the opponents 35-1, and once again winning the District 9-IV championship.
On Saturday (1/25) at 2pm, the girls (12-3-2) will host Dutchtown High School (5-7-2) in a special home match honoring the squad’s seven seniors. Come out and support the Greenies seniors! Then on Monday night (1/27), the girls will wrap up the regular season with a home match against Mandeville High School (16-7-4). Kickoff is set for 5pm.

However, their game against L.B. Landry High School turned into a nail-biter, with Newman narrowly falling to the Charging Buccaneers in a thrilling two-point loss, 53-55.
This past weekend, the junior varsity team participated in the Metairie Park Country Day School’s Martin Luther King Jr Classic, where they faced a grueling schedule of four games in two days. The JV Greenies beat Country Day and East Jefferson High School and lost to Holy Savior Menard and St. Augustine High School. In addition, the JV boys soundly defeated New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School in a regular season game by the score of 42-12. With these three wins and two losses, the boys showed grit and determination, and the future for the program is very bright.
As colder weather sets in, the varsity team will take some well-earned rest before returning to action in another away match against Terrebonne High School on Tuesday (1/28). With their recent performances, the Greenies (12- 4), continue to impress and will work to build on their momentum as the season continues. Go Greenies!
