Girls Basketball

Last week, the girls basketball team celebrated its senior players on Senior Night. The seniors on this year’s team are Amari Jones, Sophia Mills, Maggie Richardson, Jessica Taranto, Madison Williams, and team manager Aditi Shridhar. (Richardson has the distinction of being the only team member not to miss a single basket this entire season … the result of a serious foot injury that has kept her off the court.) Congratulations to the seniors, who were very thankful to everyone in the enthusiastic crowd who cheered for them and the rest of the team on Tuesday night in the Palaestra.

Unfortunately, the team came up short in both games last week. On Tuesday (1/13), the team played The Willow School New Orleans. Williams, Taranto, and Piper Christian were responsible for most of the baskets, scoring 11, 10, and 9 points, respectively. Jones and Jordin Daniels also added points, but in the end, none of these efforts were quite enough to prevail, and the final score was 38-47.

On Friday (1/16), the team traveled to Galliano for a game against South Lafourche High School. Christian, Williams, Taranto, Daniels, and Mills all made baskets against the Fighting Tarpons, but the Greenies came home without a victory.

This week, the Greenies (11-9) have an away game at Ursuline Academy of New Orleans today (1/20) at 5pm, an away game at Riverdale High School tomorrow (1/21) at 5:30pm, and a home game in the Palaestra against St. Louis Catholic High School on Friday (1/23) at 6pm.

Girls Soccer

Newman girls soccer dominated Tuesday night’s home field matchup against Lycée Français International de la Louisiane, building an early and commanding lead en route to an 8–0 mercy-rule victory at halftime. Cici Burns opened the scoring against La Meute de Loup-Garou nine minutes in and quickly added a second goal off a long assist from goalkeeper Bizzie Guy, while Bella Hobbs-Maluccio also found the net early. Reese Adler extended the lead with a fourth goal, followed by a free-kick goal from Guy. Ann Schonberg delivered a cross that Katie Gershanik finished for the sixth goal, before Adler assisted Hobbs-Maluccio for her second of the night. Schonberg closed out the scoring just before halftime, sealing the Greenies’ boys and girls doubleheader wins.

On Friday (1/16), Newman traveled to LaPlace for a district matchup against St. Charles Catholic High School and delivered an impressive road victory. Newman opened the scoring against the Comets early when Jane Summerour capitalized on a rebound after Alyse Dulitz’s strong shot hit the post. Eleanor Robinson added the second goal off a well-placed assist from Sara Córdova.

In the second half, Newman continued to control the match, scoring three straight goals. The first was on a corner kick sequence initiated by Genevieve Plaisance, with Lili Arjmand crossing to Robinson for a one-touch finish, and the second was a standout header from CC Loerzel off another Arjmand cross. St. Charles Catholic broke through and scored with eight minutes remaining, but Newman answered immediately as Brooke Montaño scored twice in quick succession to seal a commanding 6–1 district win.

Last night, though, Newman hosted St. Joseph’s Academy in a home contest and suffered a 3–0 loss, with all three goals coming in the first half. The Redstickers opened the scoring midway through the half with an unstoppable strike from about 20 yards out, then quickly added a second goal with ten minutes remaining before halftime. The visitors capped their scoring later in the first half with a third goal. Newman made offensive attempts throughout the match and continued to press forward, but ultimately fell short of finding the back of the net.

Next up, the girls will honor their seniors on Senior Night in a match that will decide the district championship against Metairie Park Country Day School. Kickoff is at 5pm and the seniors ceremony is at halftime. Then on Saturday (1/24), the girls will host University Laboratory School at 11am in another home doubleheader with the boys.

Boys Soccer

In the first match of a home doubleheader with the girls, the boys soccer team (8-2-1) faced for the first time Lycée Français International de la Louisiane (5-3-0). La Meute de Loup-Garou played surprisingly tough defense against the Greenies in the first half, leaving the game scoreless at halftime.

By the 45th minute, the game had opened up, starting with midfield Jake Isenberg’s pass to striker Reed Sanford, who ripped a screamer into the upper 90 for the opening score. Although Lycée equalized a few minutes later, the Greenies took the lead for good in the 64th minute. Freshman Weston Beevers took a short free kick just outside the penalty area and served a beautiful cross to the far post, where fellow freshman Ford Summerour battered it home with a leaping header goal for the go-ahead goal. In the 70th minute, winger Thomas Gershanik slotted the ball up to Sanford, who shot it past the keeper for an insurance goal and his team-leading 15th score of the season. With the 3-1 win, the Greenies earned their ninth win of the season.

On Thursday (1/15), the boys hosted neighborhood rival The Willow School (15-3-2) on VSN here in a rematch of last year’s only draw in the boys’ otherwise perfect season. Willow was the stronger team in the first half, but center back Nick Coffin and goalkeeper Henry Houghton led the Greenies in taming the Lions’ attack.

After halftime, the Greenie Swamp got loud and momentum shifted to the Greenies, with midfielders Veer Walia, Jake Isenberg and Roan Plymale dominating possession and distributing the ball nicely. The Greenies’ best chances to score came from a point-blank header by Atticus Lafleur that was saved by the goalkeeper and an incredible right-footed nutmeg by striker Reed Sanford that hit the inside of the far post but somehow never crossed over the goal line. The game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Varsity Sports Now, January 15, 2026

Tonight at 7pm the Greenies will host Brother Martin High School (15-2-1), the top power-ranked team in Division I. On Thursday (1/22) at 7pm, the team will honor its eleven seniors at halftime of a match against Metairie Park Country Day School, and on Saturday (1/24), the boys will host University Laboratory School (12-3-1), the top power-ranked school in Division III, at 1pm in another home doubleheader with the girls. Come and support the Greenies! For those who cannot attend, all three games will be broadcast on Varsity Sports Now.

Indoor Track and Field

Momentum is clearly building for the Indoor Track & Field program as Jada Recasner continues her record-breaking season. Competing at the McNeese State University High School Indoor Meet on Saturday (1/17), Recasner broke the school record in the 55-meter hurdles, clocking an outstanding 9.09 seconds. The previous record of 9.25, set in 2013, had stood for more than a decade. This achievement marks the second school record Recasner has broken early in the indoor season, highlighting a strong and exciting start to the year for the Greenies.

The team invites everyone to come out and support the squad at their next meet on Saturday, January 24th at Louisiana State University. Go Greenies! 💚🐊 #GreeniesRun

Boys Basketball

Greenies Bounce Back with Statement Win Over Sarah T. Reed

Instagram: media.by.hhh

After a tough loss to The Willow School at home on Tuesday, the boys basketball team responded the right way by locking in and playing well on the road, earning a 55–46 victory over district opponent Sarah T. Reed High School.

From the opening tip, Newman set the tone and never let go of the lead. The Greenies’ ability to stretch the floor proved to be the difference, as they shot efficiently from behind the arc and consistently knocked down timely three-pointers to keep the Olympians at bay. Each run by Reed was answered with poise, ball movement, and confident perimeter shooting.

Defensively, Newman stayed disciplined, limiting second-chance opportunities and forcing tough shots throughout the night. The Greenies’ balance on both ends of the floor allowed them to control the pace and maintain their advantage from start to finish. The win was a strong bounce-back performance and a clear response to the setback against Willow, showing the team’s resilience and growth as the season continues.

The Greenies will look to build on this momentum when they return to action on Wednesday (1/21), tipping off in Metairie against Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies.
