Boys Basketball
The Newman Boys Varsity team traveled from New Orleans to Dayton, Ohio to compete in the 21st Annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Basketball Invitational Tournament. Newman faced one of Ohio’s top ranked teams, Lutheran East High School of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Newman fell behind in the 1st half due to the hot shooting of Lutheran East. The half time score was Lutheran East 29, Newman 17. Early in the second half Newman locked in defensively allowing us to cut the lead. In the end, the Greenies came up short with the final score Lutheran East 55, Newman 36.
In the next game, the Greenies competed against Centerville High School from the Dayton area. Both teams traded shots in the first half, but Newman picked up the defensive pressure which led to us scoring several buckets in transition. Payton ‘PJ’ Foster hit a big three pointer at the end of the 3rd quarter which increased the team’s energy going into the fourth quarter of the game. Newman and Centerville matched each other’s intensity until the end of regulation play, sending the game into overtime. As the two teams continued to battle to the final play of the game, the official called a foul against the Greenies at a critical point of the game with only 8 seconds left in overtime. Centerville was able to take the lead by making their free throws to hold off the Greenies for the win. Final score of the game was Centerville 64, Newman 59. Chris Cenac Jr. led the Greenies with 18 pts, 11 rebounds.

Boys Soccer
On Tuesday (1/9), fresh off their convincing win against University Lab, the varsity boys hosted another strong D-3 program in Archbishop Hannan High School (7-5-2). In the 10th minute, when Amar Walia’s deep shot from distance was bobbled by the goalkeeper, left winger Rylan Claverie raced in and punched a left footer into the back of the net. A few minutes later, Paul Richard headed a long free kick that the Hawks defenders were unable to clear, leaving Claverie in front of goal for a clean finish. After halftime, Will Pinkerton’s tap pass from the striker position found Claverie, who earned his third goal and a hat trick with another strong left footer. In the 59th minute, George Villere made it 4-0 after a strong run up the right wing and service by Jack Hance. Finally, with Journey Manson keeping a clean sheet in goal, his goalkeeping counterpart Charlie Guy took advantage of a rare opportunity to play in the field. In the final minutes, Guy ripped a screamer into the net from the top of the box and raced toward the student section in celebration. With the 5-0 win, the Greenies improved their official record to 8-1-2.
On Wednesday (1/10), the JV boys took the stage for a lakefront junior varsity match against Ben Franklin High School. In a preview of the upcoming showdown between the varsity squads, the JV boys battled hard to earn a 2-2 draw against a very strong side. In this the last regular season friendly for the JV squad, sophomores Chase Hoffman and Daniel Taylor both scored goals for the Greenies.
On Thursday (1/11), the varsity boys were back in action, this time against longtime rival Pope John Paul II Catholic High School (D-4), at home on VSN here and covered by NOLA.com here. With some players out with injuries or the flu, Rowan Dravid led off the scoring in the 19th minute after fielding a long ball from Luke Mobley. In the 25th minute, a corner kick from Jake Isenberg bounced back out to Amar Walia, who buried a drive from the top of the box to make it 2-0. George Villere quickly made it 3-0 with his own long-range rocket and in the 35th minute, Isenberg wove through a phalanx of defenders to score the Greenie’s fourth unanswered goal before halftime. In the second half, with Jake Lonseth and Alex Dulitz anchoring the strong back line, Villere earned his second goal of the game after sending a long pass to Claverie and hustling his way up the field to send Claverie’s service into the net. Finally, in the 58th minute, after Dravid’s shot deflected off a Jaguar defender, Villere settled the ball and bagged his second career hat trick, leading Newman to a comfortable 6-0 victory.
On Saturday (1/13), the JV boys (pictured above) capped off their season with a three-game tournament in Houma. In the first match, freshman Henry Drew scored a game-winning header as the junior Greenies shut out the H.L. Bourgeois High School Braves for a 1-0 win. In the second match, Newman looked set to ride an Elijah Yang goal to a draw against E.D. White Catholic High School, but the Braves managed to score on the final play of the game to squeak out a 2-1 win. In the third match, against Hahnville High School, the junior Greenies moved the ball well and sophomore Henry Houghton found the back of the net. Unfortunately, the Tigers’ attack was too hard to handle, ultimately overcoming the Greenies defense for a 3-1 win. With the tournament complete and some players being called up to varsity for the final weeks of the season, Coach Avery Kindler and the JV boys concluded a fun and successful season.
Meanwhile on Saturday afternoon, the varsity boys faced off at home against Ben Franklin High School, the top team in D-2 per the coaches’ poll, in a boy-girls double header on VSN here. Hobbled by even more injuries and viral infections, the 13-man varsity boys side played with playoff intensity. In the 9th minute, a Luke Mobley free kick found the head of Journey Manson racing toward the far post to take a 1-0 lead. The Falcons looked dangerous for the rest of the first half, finally equalizing in the 34th minute off a header from a corner kick. Just after halftime, George Villere delivered a long cross to Will Pinkerton, who surprised the keeper with a 15-yard header into the top right corner to take a 2-1 lead. Again, the Falcons answered, earning a free kick in the 43rd minute and drilling a low shot under the leaping wall of defenders to make it 2-2. In the 50th minute, Ben Franklin took the lead on a run along the goal line and made a nice pass back to the striker, who finished near post from seven yards out. Refusing to quit, Newman surprised the Falcons just three minutes later with a quick short corner kick to Jake Isenberg, who powered in a left-footed shot and his second goal in as many games. Though a hard-fought draw would have been a fair result, with less than two minutes left in regulation, a Ben Franklin throw-in bounced around and landed at the feet of a Falcons attacker, who slotted the ball past the keeper for an exciting 4-3 game winner. With just their second loss of the season, the Newman boys official record dropped to 9-2-2.

With only six regular season games remaining, the varsity boys will play top-ranked Jesuit High School of New Orleans (D-1) on Thursday (1/18) at 6pm at Lafreniere Park. On Saturday (1/20) at 1pm, they’ll host Parkview Baptist School (D-3) at Michael Lupin Field.
Girls Soccer
On Wednesday (1/10), the varsity girls faced off against undefeated powerhouse Parkview Baptist School (D-3) in Baton Rouge. Under intense pressure from the Eagles from the jump, the Greenies conceded an own goal in the 7th minute off a corner kick, and another strong header goal off a corner kick two minutes later. Newman settled down for the rest of the half and even managed to score on an Eagles own goal just before halftime. However, Parkview Baptist came out strong in the second half and added two more goals in the 45th and 50th minutes to hand the Greenies their second consecutive loss.
On Saturday (1/13), the JV girls wrapped up their season with a junior varsity tournament in Houma. In the first match, against the host Terrebonne High School, the junior Greenies dominated possession and attacker Amelia Claverie found the back of the net for a 1-0 victory. In the second match, Lily Elichman scored twice and Amelia Claverie also scored again, as the junior Greenies rolled to a 3-0 victory against the Hahnville High School Tigers. In the third game, the JV girls finally met their match against E.D. White Catholic High School, falling to the Cardinals by the score of 2-0. With the two fun tournament wins, the JV girls and Coach Avery Kindler head into the offseason on a high note, with some JV girls being called up to varsity for the final weeks of the regular season.
Also on Saturday, the varsity girls took on Ben Franklin High School (8-6-0) as part of a sunny double header at home with the varsity boys on VSN here. After the Greenies offense failed to score in the past three games, Sydney Gallagher moved from the backline to the center midfield in an effort to generate more opportunities. The first of those chances came in the 15th minute, when Gallagher drove a through ball out to right winger Avery Summerour, whose cross to forward Kingsland LeBourgeois was banged high into the back of the net for the first goal of the match. In the 27th minute, a flick wide from Genevieve Plaisance went to Lili Arjmand on the right wing, who ran to the goal line and crossed to Brooke Montano, whose finish made it 2-0. A minute later, Arjmand got herself a goal of her own with a cross to Markie Batten that was lost in the sun by the Falcons keeper. Arjmand scored again moments later after fielding a through ball from Hannah Plaisance and firing a strong shot from the top of the box.
In the second half, Catherine Lapeyre’s pass wide to Summerour was crossed in hard off a retreating defender for a Falcons own goal. Desperate to avoid a shutout, Ben Franklin continued to commit numbers forward and make strong runs, but goalkeeper CeCe Pinkerton came off her line each time to thwart the Falcons attacks. In the 69th minute, Montano scored her second goal of the match after beating the defenders to the ball on a Summerour corner kick. Two minutes later, the Greenies streaked down the field with a combination of passes before Montano finished in front of goal for her third score of the game. With the Montano hat trick and the defense’s clean sheet, the Greenies reached the maximum goal differential and the game, by rule, ended early with the score of 8-0. With the win, the Newman girls improved their record to 10-2-2.
On Thursday at 7pm, the Greenies will look to remain undefeated in their district games with a home match against Louise S. McGehee School. Admission is free for Newman faculty, staff and students, and others can purchase tickets for $5 here.
