Signing Day

Last week, the school honored the eight seniors who have signed letters of intent to continue their Newman athletic careers in college: Brett Bordelon (LSU Football), Eli Friend (Princeton Football), Sydney Gallagher (Rhodes College Soccer), Gwendolyn Gray (Vassar College Tennis), Kaylie Hui (Rhodes College Golf), Max Kukuy (Franklin & Marshall Lacrosse), Maslen L'Esperance (Vassar College Cross Country and Track), and Jax Mendler (Concord University Golf). Congratulations Greenies!

Girls Basketball

The girls varsity basketball team has had a dominating performance in the New Year, winning every single game. On January 7, the team played an away game at the Academy of Our Lady School in Marrero, winning 55-34. Junior Madison Williams led the team with 27 points, three of which were three-pointers. Senior Kasia Wells scored 17 points, including two three-pointers. Senior Stella Joyce and eighth grader Piper Christian also made baskets to clinch the victory over the Penguins.

On January 9, the team played a home game against West Jefferson High School in the Palaestra and won 53-20. Williams led the team against the Buccaneers with 21 points, three of which were three-pointers, and Wells scored 11 points. Also making baskets were seniors Ava Azzano and Joyce, juniors Sophia Mills and Amari Jones, sophomore Dawson Wells, and eighth grader Christian.

On January 10, the team played a hard-fought game against Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy, and the Greenies came out on top 49-46. Williams led the team with 21 points. Christian made 16, with all but one of those points coming from an impressive five three-pointers. Also making baskets were Kasia Wells, Joyce, Jones, and Bagot.

This week, the varsity team plays away games at Louise S. McGehee School at 4:30pm today (1/14) and at Walter L. Cohen High School at 5:30pm on Wednesday (1/15). On Friday (1/17), there are two games against Benjamin Franklin High School in the Palaestra; the JV team plays at 4pm, and the varsity team plays at 5pm. Go Greenies!

Boys Basketball

With a full week of preparation, the varsity boys (10-3) are hosting the New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics School at 7pm this evening in the Palaestra. On Friday (1/17), the boys will play a critical match against Sarah T. Reed Senior High School at 7pm. Also mark your calendars for Senior Night on January 31 at 7pm, honoring the Greenies’ five seniors. The Greenies could use your support, so let’s have a great turnout for the basketball boys!

Girls Soccer

With the boys’ and girls’ matches against Benjamin Franklin High School cancelled due to the Falcons’ wet field, the varsity soccer girls (10-2-2) now have six regular seasons remaining. Today, the top-ranked varsity girls will play St. Mary’s Dominican High School (13-7-2) at Pan American Stadium at 5pm, followed by the JV girls game at 7pm. On Thursday (1/16), the girls will travel to Covington for a match against St. Scholastica Academy (8-2-5) and then on Saturday, the girls will look to go undefeated in district play against Metairie Park Country Day School in Metairie at 11am. Go Greenies!

Boys Soccer

Today, the varsity boys (15-0) look to continue their perfect season in an away match against Brother Martin High School (13-3-4) at Lafreniere Park at 4pm. On Thursday (1/16) at 7pm, the boys will take on The Willow School (14-2-1) at the Brees Family Field on Nashville Avenue. Then on Saturday (1/18) at 1pm, the boys will play an away district match against Metairie Park Country Day School in a double header with the girls. Let’s go boys!
