Newman Boys Basketball Dominates Week, Honors Seniors and Prepares for Rematch Against McDonogh 35
The boys basketball team delivered an impressive performance this past week, securing three consecutive victories. Newman started their winning week with a strong showing against Terrebonne High School, executing sharp offensive plays and suffocating defense to secure a 49-43 victory over the Tigers.
The team then carried that energy into their Senior NIght matchup against Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies on Varsity Sports Now here, with the home court stands filled with family, friends and fans to honor the seniors.

From the tip-off, the Greenies put on another dominant display, swatting the Yellow Jackets 67-34. Senior honorees Dre Davis, Sachin Dasa and PJ Foster all had great games offensively, shooting well from the three-point line, while seniors John Baumgarten and Copeland Bowen dominated the paint, grabbed rebounds and scored buckets like this one. The seniors will be missed!

Basketball Boys Senior Night, January 31, 2025
Closing out the week, the Greenies faced off against Warren Easton High School, battling through a competitive contest on the road to emerge victorious 65-60. With the win, the Greenies improved to 12-5 and climbed to #6 in the Division III power rankings.
With confidence running high, the boys now turn their focus to a road game tomorrow (2/5) in Marrero against L.W. Higgins High School (4-20) and then a highly anticipated rematch on Friday (2/7) against McDonogh 35 Senior High School (21-6). The two teams previously faced off in a tightly contested game in the Palaestra in mid-December, with the Roneagles narrowly besting the Greenies 49-45. The upcoming matchup across town promises to be a crucial test as Newman looks to maintain its winning form and continue its pursuit of a successful season. With momentum on their side, Newman is ready for the challenge. Go Greenies!
Girls Basketball
After starting 2025 with an amazing 10-game winning streak, the girls varsity basketball team came up short in two games last week against strong opponents.
On Monday (1/26), the team had a tough loss to Phoenix High School from Plaquemines Parish, losing 29-60. Freshman Breigha Leal led the team with 10 points, and eighth grader Piper Christian had 8 points. Also scoring were seniors Audrey Bagot, Kasia Wells, and Stella Joyce, and junior Amari Jones.

On Friday (1/31), the JV and varsity teams lost their games against the Academy of the Sacred Heart. Although the team did not end the regular season as they wanted, the girls still had a strong showing in January, and they are looking forward to competing this week in the district tournament.
Today (2/4), the varsity team plays against Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. High School at 5:30pm in the Palaestra. Semifinals will be on Thursday night (2/6), and finals will be on Friday night (2/7). Good luck Greenies!
Boys Soccer
![]() Young Greenies congratulate the soccer boys after their first round playoff win | On Friday afternoon (1/31), the varsity soccer boys (18-0-1) launched what they hope will be a very successful run in the Division IV state championship tournament. Their first round opponent was Union Parish High School (3-12), the 32nd seed, from Farmerville, Louisiana, and the game was broadcast on VSN here. |
In just the first minute, Amar Walia put the Greenies on the scoreboard with an assist from Rylan Claverie. Cole Spady’s strike off another pass from Claverie doubled the score, and Claverie’s bending corner kick inside the far post gave him an unassisted Olimpico and made it 3-0. In the 24th minute, a Farmer midfielder shocked everyone in the complex with a 67-yard punt that sailed over the head of the Newman keeper and into the back of the net, for only the seventh goal allowed by the Greenies all season.
The Greenies quickly recovered, with Will Pinkerton’s sending a ball into the area to Claverie who headed the ball to George Villere for a strong header over the goalkeeper.

Claverie picked up another goal on a penalty kick in the 23th minute, and Villere quickly added this second goal of the day on a cross from Spady. In the 30th minute, Spady made it 7-1, capitalizing on a deflection by the Farmer goalkeeper after a strong shot from Walia. Three minutes later, Claverie’s left-footed rocket from outside the box gave the Greenies their eighth goal of the afternoon and remarkably, the 99th goal of his storied high school career. Meanwhile, another high school journey was just starting, with freshman Reed Sanford scoring the first goal of his varsity career in the 37th minute, naturally with an assist from Claverie. As time was expiring, Spady earned a hat trick with his 34th goal of the season, giving the Greenies a 10-1 win at halftime due to the maximum goal differential rule and propelling them into the next round of the playoffs.
Tomorrow night (2/5), the boys will host the 17th seed, Catholic High School, New Iberia (5-6-4), in the second round of the playoffs. Tickets to the playoff game, which are required for all spectators, can be purchased here. Go Greenies!
