Baseball
The Diamond Greenies are 2-1 after the first week of play. In the season opener against the Archbishop Hannan Hawks, Sophomore ace Christian Sauska went 5 innings, struck out 9 batters, and limited the Hawks to 2 runs on 4 hits. Unfortunately, the Newman bats were ice cold and the Greenies failed to capitalize on Sauska’s solid outing, losing 0-6.
The Greenie bats came alive over the next two games, however, with Newman combining for 22 hits in a 15-1 win over 5A Bonnabel and a 10-2 victory against 5A East Jefferson. Against Bonnabel, Newman got multiple hits from Clayton Stevens (2) and Charles Wilson (2), while Peter Loop, Henry Haber, Brendan Blackburn, Henry Cook, and Guy Guidroz added one hit each. Junior hurler Tyler Zweifler got the win for the Greenies, with Henry Cook and Brendan Blackburn combining for 3 effective innings in relief.
Against East Jefferson, Sophomore Charles Wilson earned the win for the Diamond Greenies and had a big night at the plate (2-4, 3 RBIs), while the Senior quartet of Stevens, Guidroz, Blackburn and Jack Nesser also contributed multiple hits. Cook, Fulton Price, and Collier Villere added base hits for the Greenies, and Zweifler closed the game out with 3 steady innings on the bump.
Next weekend, the Diamond Greenies get a change of scenery and travel up to Monroe, Louisiana for a four game slate against vaunted North Louisiana competition. Go Greenies!
Boys Basketball
The Newman Boys Varsity basketball team has a first round bye going into the Louisiana State playoffs. Currently on an eight game winning streak the Greenies are using this week off from playing as a time for recovery and preparation for the upcoming playoffs. Newman is set to host Thomas Jefferson High School of Gretna in the second round of the playoffs on Tuesday night, February 27th. Tickets to the game must be purchased here.
If the Greenies win on Tuesday, they will play again on Friday night against the winner of a game between Country Day and Sophie B. Wright. Newman will be starting the playoffs with a lot of momentum, which will hopefully pay big dividends in the end. Go Greenies!
Lacrosse
Continuing through their early season “Louisiana & Gulf South Magical Mystery Lacrosse Tour”, on Saturday the Greenies pivoted east on I-10 towards Mobile, AL from last week’s domination of Caddo Magnet and C.E. Byrd in Shreveport to take on the UMS-Wright Bulldogs.
With senior McCall Engelhardt not in goal, senior attackman Heid Manning showed his leadership and stepped into the cage to defend the crease, ultimately saving 8 goals in the contest. UMS-Wright was fairly outmatched from the jump by the Greenies’ stout defensive squad, led by senior William Darragh (8 ground balls; 2 caused turn overs), junior Patrick Landry (2 ground balls; 4 caused turn overs) and senior Paolo Guillen (2 ground balls; 3 caused turn overs), and led by an 11-4 margin as late as 9 minutes remaining into the 3rd quarter of the game.
Despite being outmatched on all sides of the ball, the Greenies allowed the Bulldogs to hang around through the second half of the game. However, ultimately the 18-goal offensive onslaught by Newman was too much to handle for UMS-Wright, and the deep offensive bench stepped up to complete the 18-13 “Murder by the Bay”. Scoring for the Greenies was led by junior William Mahfouz (career high 6 goals; 3 assists), junior Eli Friend (4 goals; 5 assists; 17 ground balls), and sophomore Price Demeyers and senior Coalter McCall contributing an additional 3 goals each.
Newman Lacrosse moves to an undefeated 4-0 on the season, and looking ahead, faces their toughest opponent this season in Catholic High of Baton Rouge (Friday at 7pm @ Lupin Field) and Loyola (Shreveport) in Lafayette at noon on Saturday.
Girls Soccer
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEWMAN GIRLS SOCCER STATE CHAMPS!
After beating the #2 seed in Shreveport in the semi-finals, the Newman girls (#3 seed) returned to the State Championship (D-IV) game in Hammond on the LHSAA and NFHS Networks here. The undefeated opponent, Episcopal School of Baton Rouge (22-0-1), was highly motivated by last year’s 4-2 championship game loss to the Greenies, and had never trailed in a match all season.
At kickoff, the Newman girls lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, adding an extra defender to deal with Episcopal’s leading scorer, one of the state’s best players. In the 14th minute, right winger Avery Summerour, selected the game’s most outstanding player, launched a rocket into the top left-hand corner to give the Greenies an early lead. The Knights pressed hard for an equalizer throughout the rest of the game, but the Newman defenders denied them at every turn. Right back Sydney Gallagher’s header cleared away an Episcopal screamer in the first half, and left back Sarah Gibbs Smallpage’s audacious tackle stopped a dangerous fast break. Goalkeepers CeCe Pinkerton and Bizzie Guy combined for a number of strong saves that preserved the clean sheet (shutout), their 12th of the year. With the signature win, the Greenies finished the year at 17-4-2, outscoring their opponents 19-1 in the playoffs and 56-14 in the regular season, and the girls earned their state record 14th state championship, the school’s 113th overall.
Congratulations to all the state champion Newman girls, especially captains Hannah Plaisance (also named by the state’s coaches to the LHSCA All-Star Game), Maggie Mills and Claire Charpentier, and their coaching staff: Doug Freese, Erin Brennan, Avery Kindler, and Tejan Salaam. Also many thanks and congratulations to athletic trainer Dan Pellerito and his staff, high performance instructor Dakota Coats, and parent managers Allison Plaisance, Lauren Mills, and Jenny Charpentier. Go Greenies!
