Boys Soccer

The Times-Picayune, February 19, 2025

The boys soccer team (22-0-1) arrived in Hammond’s Strawberry Stadium as the #1 seed in a showdown with the #2 seed, Ascension Episcopal School (18-3-2), in the Division IV state championship game. Having won the state title as freshmen but falling short in the semi-finals the past two years, the eleven Newman seniors looked to bookend their high school careers with an undefeated season and another state championship.

With the stands packed with Newman faithful, in the 29th minute, striker Cole Spady showed persistence in the penalty area and slammed the ball home to lead off the scoring for the Greenies. A short time later, with the Greenies controlling the game, an alert Spady capitalized off a mistake by the Blue Gators, worked his way around the keeper, and scored to make it 2-0.

Just before halftime, the Blue Gators were able to draw a foul in the penalty area and convert a penalty kick to cut the lead in half. In the 49th minute, however winger Amar Walia found space with the ball on the right wing and ripped a perfect shot across goal and just inside the far post.

With the two-goal lead, the superior Greenies ball handlers and defenders were able to keep their opponents at bay to close out the match and earn their 11th boys soccer state championship.

For his heroics, Spady was named the most outstanding player of the game, and the team finished its dream season with an incredible 23-0-1 record. Congratulations Greenies!

Girls Soccer

After watching the boys soccer team win their championship game by two goals, the girls soccer players turned to their brothers and said hold my Owala. Coming in as the #2 seed, the Greenies (16-3-2) returned to Hammond’s Strawberry Stadium for the third year in a row, this time against the top seed, Loyola College Preparatory School (22-4-3).

In the 24th minute, senior defender Sarah Gibbs Smallpage headed a corner kick pass the Flyers goalkeeper to give the Greenies the lead. The girls went into halftime with only the one-goal lead, but erupted for a record-setting performance in the second half.

In the 45th minute, senior midfielder Catherine Lapeyre doubled the lead with a missle from outside the penalty area.

Junior striker Lili Arjmand, who was named the game’s most outstanding player for the second time in her career, added a third goal from even farther out with a screamer of her own.

Junior Alyse Dulitz made it 4-0 shortly thereafter when she knocked an errant clearance into the back of the net. Senior Kingsland LeBourgeois piled on with a goal in the 71st minute, and senior Avery Summerour, who had the winning goal in last year’s championship game, tacked on another score with an assist from Arjmand.

Late in the match, junior winger Katie Gershanik fielded a sweet pass from senior MaryCatherine Flower and added a state championship record-setting seventh goal to finish the night with the girls up 7-0.

Girls Basketball

The varsity girls basketball team ended its season last night in the regional round game against Holy Savior Menard Central High School. Although the Greenies had certainly hoped to advance even further in the playoffs, there is much to be proud of as we look back in the 2024-2025 season. The team has been playing for much of 2025 without a significant number of its players because of injuries and other factors. Yet the rest of the team showed incredible resilience, evidenced by the team’s #7 seeding for the playoffs.

As this season draws to a close, we are thankful for the contributions of seniors Ava Azzano, Audrey Bagot, Stella Joyce, Kasia Wells, and team manager Brett Beasley. Each one of them is talented and a wonderful teammate.

The team now turns its focus to the upcoming 2025-2026 season, with spring practice just around the corner. Next year’s team will be made up of impressive and enthusiastic student athletes, and there is no question that Greenie fans will have lots to cheer for.

Boys Basketball

Newman Boys Basketball Wraps Up Regular Season with 20-6 Wins, Eyes Playoffs

The boys basketball team has completed an impressive regular season, finishing with a win record of 20 wins and 6 losses. Despite their strong performance, the team fell just short in their bid for the district championship, losing to Metairie Park Country Day School in a hard-fought matchup.

With the regular season behind them, the Greenies now turn their focus to the upcoming state Division III (Select) playoffs. As the #4 seed in the brackets here, the boys receive a bye in the first round and will face the winner of Northlake Christian School (#13) and Houma Christian School (#24) at home, likely on Lundi Gras, March 3. Stay tuned for details!

Baseball

Newman Varsity Greenies Showcase Early Firepower and Competitive Grit Against But Could Not Hold the Early Lead Against West Ouachita

Last weekend, the baseball team played three strong teams in a tournament hosted by Ouachita Christian School in Monroe. On Friday (2/21), the Greenies displayed their offensive potential early, jumping out to a fast start against West Ouachita High School. In the second inning, Atticus Lafleur sparked the offense with a key RBI double against the Chiefs, and Charles Wilson’s well-placed grounder helped push another run across.

Newman capitalized on aggressive baserunning and defensive miscues, plating four runs to set the tone against a tough West Ouachita squad. Lafleur led the Greenies’ offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, proving to be a key presence in the lineup. Tanner Robert also contributed, finishing 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Matthew Schairer showed his ability to get on base, drawing two walks and scoring a run. Their collective efforts gave the Greenies strong offensive production early in the game.

On the mound, Tyler Zweifler delivered a determined performance, throwing 3.2 innings and recording three strikeouts while throwing 73 pitches (39 for strikes). His early work helped Newman establish momentum, and his ability to challenge hitters kept the Greenies in the game during the early innings.

Unfortunately, the early runs weren’t enough to overcome their opponents’ well-timed hits in the later innings, handing the Greenies their third loss of the season.

Newman Falls Short Against the Mangham Dragons Despite Strong Offensive Performance

In its second game of the day, Newman put together a solid offensive performance, out-hitting Mangham High School 8-4, but came up just short in a 3-2 loss. The Greenies generated multiple scoring opportunities and kept the pressure on throughout the game.

After allowing three early runs, the boys responded with a run in the third and another in the sixth, but couldn't find the clutch hit to tie the game. Strong pitching and consistent offensive production kept them in the fight until the final out.

Christian Sauska and Collier Villere led the way offensively, while Henry Cook delivered a strong relief outing. Despite a late push, Newman couldn’t capitalize in the final innings and will look to build on their performance in the next games.

Offensive Highlights:

  • Sauska led the Greenies with two hits.

  • Villere drove in both of Newman's runs, going 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly.

  • Wilson, Zweifler, Cook, Schairer, and Robert each added a hit.

  •  Robert scored a run and reached base twice.

Pitching Performances:

  • Sauska – 4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

  • Cook – 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K

Newman Outhits Family Community Christian But Falls Short

On Saturday (2/22), Newman wasted no time getting on the board against Family Community Christian School, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when a wild pitch allowed a run to score. The Greenies consistently put pressure on the Warriors’ pitcher, working deep counts and getting runners on base.

A tough third inning put Newman behind, but the Greenies responded in the fourth when Lafleur delivered an RBI single. Jack Falgoust added another run in the sixth with an RBI hit, keeping Newman in striking distance. Despite out-hitting the opposition 7-6 and drawing six walks, the Greenies couldn’t push across enough runs to complete the comeback and fell 6-3.

Top Performers at the Plate:

  • Zweifler: 2-for-4, 1 double

  • Lafleur: 1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 stolen base, and 1 run

  • Falgoust: 1-for-4, 1 RBI

  • Villere: 2 walks

Pitching Summary:

  • Falgoust (L): 5.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

  • Villere: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

The Greenies will look to rebound at home tonight against Livingston’s Doyle High School at 6pm, and then tomorrow at 6pm away against Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies. During Mardi Gras week, the boys will take on Bonnabel Magnet Academy High School and Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy, both on the road. Go Greenies!

Lacrosse

The lacrosse team had to wait a couple of days to get back on the pitch when the match against Chaos Lacrosse Louisiana was postponed due to weather. Once the boys got on the field, however, the team was ready to go. On Saturday morning, the team continued its strong start to the season with a convincing 16-1 victory in Geismar against an overmatched Ascension Parish Community Lacrosse Club.

The Greenies were led on offense by three of its captains, Max Kukuy with seven more goals and two assists to lead the team, Eli Friend, with two goals and two assists, and William Mahfouz, with two goals of his own. The underclassmen joined the scoring with juniors Price DeMeyers and Christopher Connolly each adding two goals and contributing two and one assists, respectively. The offensive firepower was counter-balanced by an overwhelming defense led by the other team captain Patrick Landry with 4 forced turnovers and 7 groundball recoveries.

The team as a whole controlled the game from the start and Emeric Laborde looks to be settling in very comfortably in goal with ten saves and only one goal allowed. Congratulations to the young players who got extended playing time, including Colin Farnsworth who contributed his first goal on the varsity team.

Newman opens its home slate with its first match at Lupin Field TONIGHT when it hosts the Rummel Red Raiders at 6pm. Come out and support your Greenies!

The softball season opener against Crescent City Christian School was postponed due to rain last night, so the girls will open instead at Riverdale High School this afternoon. After a short Mardi Gras break, the girls will play Northshore High School and Lakeshore High School on Saturday, March 8. All N!

The Green N White Sports Report will take a break for parades next week and resume on March 11. Happy Mardi Gras!
