Semifinal: Episcopal Knights 1, Newman Greenies 2,

In a fiercely contested semifinal on Friday, the Greenies traveled to Baton Rouge and battled past Episcopal School of Baton Rouge with a thrilling 2–1 overtime victory. Episcopal struck first in a physical, hard-fought match, but Newman responded with determination. With just three minutes remaining in regulation, freshman Jane Summerour delivered a precise cross to freshman Eleanor Robinson, who fired an incredible shot into the net to tie the game at 1–1 and force overtime.

Seven minutes into the first overtime period, Summerour again created the opportunity, sending in a corner kick that was deflected in front of goal. Senior Lili Arjmand reacted quickly and punched in the go-ahead score to give Newman the 2–1 lead. The Greenies’ defense held firm through the final minutes, sealing the dramatic win and sending Newman on to its fourth consecutive state championship game.

Quarterfinal: Loyola College Prep Flyers 0, Newman Greenies 1

Last Monday, Newman traveled to Shreveport to play Loyola College Prep in the quarterfinals.

After many attempts in the first half and some knuckle-biting back-and-forth, the score remained 0–0 and the game went into overtime. Neither team scored in the first half of overtime, but with only two minutes left in the second half of overtime, the Greenies scored with an amazing shot by Arjmand.

The defense held on for the clean sheet and Newman was able to return home victorious, advancing to the semifinals in Baton Rouge with the 1-0 result.

Second Round: Newman Greenies 1, Northlake Christian 0

Earlier, on the Wednesday before Mardi Gras, the girls hosted a second round playoff game, this one a rematch against Northlake Christian School (10-6-3), the #11 seed. After six early attempts, Newman finally broke through with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Jane Summerour delivered a beautiful cross to Eleanor Robinson, who finished the play with a strong shot to give Newman a 1–0 lead over the Wolverines.

Varsity Sports Now, February 11, 2026

The Greenies continued to apply offensive pressure throughout the match, recording more than 16 total shots. Despite several strong opportunities in the second half and both teams playing physically and battling hard on both ends of the field, the score remained unchanged, and the Greenies earned the 1-0 victory and a trip to Shreveport for the quarterfinals.

Boys Soccer

The boys soccer season came to a sudden end on Friday night, with the defending state champion Greenies falling 2-1 in double overtime in the semifinals at home on a golden goal to a very strong team from Ascension Episcopal School. Until then, the boys had thrived in the playoffs, handily defeating two teams from central Louisiana at Michael Lupin Field.

Second Round: Newman Greenies 8, Rapides Mustangs 0

On the Wednesday before Mardi Gras, the boys soccer team (11-3-4), the #1 seed in the Division IV playoffs, hosted Rapides High School (9-9-0), the #16 seed, for a second round playoff game on VSN here. In the sixth minute, striker Will Pinkerton led off the scoring with a high-altitude header off a corner kick from midfielder Jake Isenberg. Ten minutes later, the senior captain duo teamed up again, this time with Isenberg fielding a pass from Pinkerton, beating his man, and drilling a low left footer into the back corner of the net.

Also in the first half, left winger Hamilton Houghton tapped in another goal on a ball by right winger Reed Sanford, who proceeded to score two consecutive goals of his own. Midfielder Weston Beevers added a pair of goals, one off a pass from Daniel Taylor and another with an unassisted screamer into the bottom corner.

Varsity Sports Now, February 11, 2026

A few minutes into the second half, after a hard foul on Joe Morris, Pinkerton lined up for a free kick and blasted a banger past the Mustangs wall for the eighth goal of the night, triggering the maximum goal differential rule and ending the contest. With the win, the Greenies earned their twelfth win of the season and moved on to host the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal: Newman Greenies 4, Holy Savior Menard Eagles 1

On Lundi Gras, the boys took on the #9 seed, Holy Savior Menard Central High School, at home on Michael Lupin Field and on VSN here for a spirited quarterfinals match. The Eagles scored first in stoppage time of the first half on a header from a free kick, but the Greenies answered minutes later when right winger Reed Sanford chased a long throw in by Atticus Lafleur and fired the ball back across the far post and past the diving goalkeeper for the equalizer.

Varsity Sports Now, February 16, 2026

Just after halftime, in the 43rd minute, a Jake Isenberg corner kick was punched by the Eagles goalkeeper but subsequently headed into the crossbar by Sanford and Will Pinkerton. With the goalkeeper off his line, wingback Thomas Smallpage stepped up to chest the ball into the net for the first goal of his young career and what would be the game winner.

Varsity Sports Now, February 16, 2026

In the 67th minute, the Eagles made a hard challenge on a fast break that could have resulted in a penalty kick, but the referee reasonably deemed it clean contact. In the 76th minute, the Greenies had a Pinkerton goal disallowed due to a handball by a teammate in the buildup, but things had already begun to unravel for the visitors.

Three minutes later, the Eagles center midfielder and leading scorer earned a red card and ejection after being cautioned twice for unsporting behavior, including a slide tackle from behind on Hamilton Houghton. After a long delay, the Eagles were able to collect themselves and finish the match, albeit with only ten players.

When play finally resumed, the Greenies picked up where they left off. In the eighth minute of stoppage time, Hamilton Houghton moved the ball to center midfielder Roan Plymale, whose feed to a cutting Sanford from the right wing led to the Greenies third goal.

On the final play of the match, a Joe Morris interception led to Sanford’s streaking down the right wing and lofting a perfect lofted outswinger to senior Jai Bansal for an electrifying header that made it 4-1 and sent the Greenies on to the semifinals.

Semifinal: Newman Greenies 1, Ascension Episcopal Blue Gators 2

On Friday night, the Greenies (#1) hosted the team they had beaten in last year’s state championship game, Ascension Episcopal School (#4), on VSN here. Midway through the first half, the Blue Gators took the lead on its first shot of the match, off a throw in into the penalty box that was flicked in with a header.

The Greenies outshot the Blue Gators all night and broke through in stoppage time of the first half for the 1-1 equalizer after captain Jake Isenberg’s peach of a corner kick was headed past the keeper by fellow captain Will Pinkerton for his seventh goal of the season.

Fox 8 Sports, February 20, 2026

Both teams defended well in the second half and into regular overtime and even sudden death overtime, where the score remained deadlocked at 1-1.

Varsity Sports Now, February 20, 2026

In the 107th minute, however, just three minutes from penalty kicks, a Blue Gators attacker managed to track down a long goal kick into the right corner and cross it into the back of the Greenies net for a remarkable golden goal and a 2-1 instant victory.

With the loss, the Greenies finished the season at 13-4-4. The Newman seniors wrap up their careers with a stellar record of 71-13-11 over four years, including a state championship and three seasons advancing into the semi-finals, with a tenure that included a stretch of 26 consecutive games over 402 days without a loss. Congratulations, Greenies!

Girls Basketball

Last night, the girls basketball team (#8) hosted a playoff game against Episcopal School of Baton Rouge (#9) in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at the Palaestra and on VSN here.

The district champion Greenies’ hard work throughout the season earned them a first round bye and the right to play on their home court, and the team battled from start to finish. Despite their best efforts, the Greenies came up short, falling 38-47.

This game marks the end of a season filled with fantastic individual performances, great teamwork, and plenty of camaraderie.

The team was led by seniors Amari Jones, Sophia Mills, Maggie Richardson, Jessica Taranto, Madison Williams, and team manager Aditi Shridhar, whose leadership and dedication set the tone all year. Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff on a memorable season!

Indoor Track and Field

Peak Performances at the Right Time

At the LHSAA State Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet on the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, the indoor track and field team rose to the occasion with clutch, late-season performances, proving once again that championship moments bring out the best in this team.

Girls Highlights

The headline moment of the meet belonged to Madelyn Argote, who delivered a breakthrough performance in the 400 meter dash finals. Argote blazed to a 59.58, earning 5th place and, most impressively, breaking the one-minute barrier for the first time in her career. Going sub-60 is a major milestone in the 400m, and Argote did it when it mattered most.

In the field events, Jada Recasner stood tall as the only Greenie to reach the podium. Recasner soared 36-0.75 in the triple jump to claim third place, securing a medal for Newman. Her consistency and competitiveness throughout the season paid off in a big way on finals day.

Other strong finals performances for the Greenies included:

• 4x800 meter relay (Girls) – 5th place, 10:58.03

Remi Cousin, 60m hurdles – 7th place, 9.49

• 4x200 meter relay (Girls) – 10th place, 1:56.39

• 4x400 meter relay (Girls) – 10th place, 4:36.06

Boys Highlights

The boys also delivered solid finals performances, with all individual competitors scoring points for the Greenies.

Logan DeGruy, 800m – 4th place, 2:04.68

Dylan Kolenovsky, shot put – 4th place, 48-3.5

Logan DeGruy, 1600m – 5th place, 4:35.79

Louis Barnett, pole vault – 6th place, 10-0

• 4x800 meter relay (Boys) – 10th place, 9:57.24

With personal records falling and podium finishes secured here at the conclusion of the indoor track and field season, the Greenies showed they are peaking at exactly the right time heading into the outdoor season. This team continues to compete with heart, confidence, and championship energy. Catch them outside next month!

Greenies Power Through District Run, Secure Playoff Spot

The boys basketball team delivered an impressive stretch of performances during district play, winning three of four games and earning a trip to the district championship game before ultimately falling short to Metairie Park Country Day School.

Despite the district championship loss, Newman has officially secured its spot in the playoffs, with the Greenies (#22 seed) set to play away at Independence High Magnet High School (#11 seed) on Friday night (2/27) at 7pm.

Statement Win Over Sci High

The Greenies opened district action in dominant fashion on the Thursday before Mardi Gras with a commanding 54-12 victory over New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School. From the opening tip, the Newman defense set the tone against the Chambered Nautilus offense. The Greenies smothered passing lanes, forced turnovers, and limited quality shot attempts. Offensively, Newman moved the ball efficiently and capitalized on transition opportunities to build a sizable lead early. The 42-point victory showcased Newman’s defensive discipline and depth, as multiple players contributed on both ends of the floor.

Greenies Outlast Covenant Christian Academy

In a more competitive matchup on Lundi Gras, Newman earned a hard-fought 77-67 win over Covenant Christian Academy. The game featured strong offensive execution from both teams, but the Greenies maintained composure down the stretch. Newman’s ability to attack the basket, knock down perimeter shots, and convert key free throws proved to be the difference. When the Lions made runs, Newman responded each time, demonstrating poise and leadership in critical moments.

Strong Finish Against South Plaquemines

The Greenies continued their momentum on Thursday with another quality win, defeating South Plaquemines High School by the score of 78-68. Newman’s balanced scoring attack and aggressive defense once again led the way. The Greenies controlled the tempo for much of the contest, pushing the pace while staying disciplined in half-court sets. The victory over the Hurricanes punched the Greenies’ ticket to the district championship game and confirmed Newman was playing some of its best basketball at the right time of the season.

District Championship Game Against Metairie Park Country Day

In the district championship game against Metairie Park Country Day, the Greenies ran into a tough opponent and fell 86-48. The Cajuns executed at a high level, and Newman struggled to find consistent offensive rhythm throughout the contest. While the final score did not go in their favor, the championship appearance by the Greenies reflected the growth and resilience the boys had shown throughout district play.

Playoff Bound

With momentum from three strong district wins and valuable experience from the championship game, Newman enters the playoffs on Friday night against Independence battle-tested and motivated. The mission now is simple: regroup, refocus, and get ready!

Newman Dominates C.E. Byrd High School 18–4 in Season Opener

The lacrosse team opened its regular season in commanding fashion Friday night on a weekend road trip to Shreveport, rolling past C.E. Byrd High School behind a balanced offensive explosion and a swarming defensive effort in an 18-4 victory.

Instagram: @newman.lacrosse

Senior attackman Price DeMeyers led the charge with a five‑goal performance, showcasing his finishing touch and veteran poise. William Long followed closely with four goals of his own, while freshman Luke Whelan made a statement in his high‑school debut, burying three and sparking the sideline with his energy. Christopher Connolly and Colin Farnsworth added pair of goals, with Trey Nguyen and long‑stick defender James Ryan both scoring goals that sent the bench into a frenzy.

Sophomore Ezra Friend orchestrated the offense with two crisp assists, while Farnsworth delivered a gritty two‑way performance, winning five face-offs and scooping seven ground balls to keep Newman in control of possession.

Defensively, the unit was just as sharp. Senior Corbett Parrino and sophomore Edge Levine each forced three turnovers, disrupting the Yellow Jackets’ rhythm all night. Ryan added five ground balls to his stat line, capping off a standout game on both ends of the field. In the goal, Emeric Laborde was steady and composed, turning away eight shots and anchoring a defense that allowed just four goals.

Newman Triumphs Over Benton Tigers 15–7 in Saturday Morning Clash

On Saturday, the Greenies kept it going with a win against Benton High School in a hard-fought battle. Long led the offensive charge with an impressive six-goal performance, while DeMeyers and Whelan each contributed three goals apiece. Sophomores Colin Farnsworth and Ezra Friend also found the back of the net, adding depth to the scoring attack. Dishing out assists were Whelan (4), Friend (2), Farnsworth (2), along with Connolly, DeMeyers, and freshman Thatcher Angelico, who each added one. On the defensive end, Ryan was a force, scooping nine ground balls and forcing eight turnovers. Goalie Laborde stood tall, making six crucial saves to secure the victory. With contributions coming from every corner of the roster, Newman showed a promising start to the season.

The boys’ next match will be Friday night on the road, taking on UMS-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile, Alabama. Let’s Go Greenies!!!

Baseball

After splitting two games before the Mardi Gras break, the baseball team traveled to play four games in West Monroe in the Trey Altick Memorial Tournament hosted by Ouachita Christian School.

Newman Loses to Pearl River in Extra Innings

Newman struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, showing patience at the plate and early offensive pressure. Christian Sauska worked a walk and Collier Villere delivered an RBI line-drive single as the Greenies jumped out to a 2–0 lead.

X: @Baseball_Newman, February 10, 2026

Pearl River answered to take a brief lead, but Newman responded in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game 3–3 when Tanner Robert was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run. The score stayed even into extra innings, when Pearl River pushed across two late runs to secure the 5–3 final.

Missed opportunities were the story. Newman loaded the bases twice, including the first inning with one out, and had runners in scoring position several other times, but managed only one run from those chances.

Greenies Respond Early and Pull Away Late in Win Over Kenner Discovery

Newman overcame an early defensive setback and steadily took control, defeating Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy 10–4 on the Thursday before Mardi Gras at Avenger Field. The Swamp Owls scored two runs in the first inning, but in the bottom of the second, Jack Falgoust lined a single down the left-field line to tie the game at 2–2 and shift momentum back to Newman.

Kenner Discovery briefly regained the lead in the third inning, but Sauska brought home a run on a fielder’s choice, and Benjamin Singer followed with an RBI single to center field to give the Greenies the lead again. After Kenner Discovery tied the game at four in the fourth inning, Newman seized control for good in the bottom half of the frame. Defensive pressure forced consecutive errors that allowed two runs to score and put the Greenies ahead permanently. Newman added insurance in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to break the game open while the pitching staff shut down any comeback attempt.

Missed Opportunities and Early Runs Prove Costly for Newman

In the first game of the West Monroe tournament, Newman generated consistent offense and received a strong pitching performance, but ultimately fell 4–0 to Lafayette Christian Academy. A slow defensive start allowed the Knights to push across early runs, forcing Newman to play from behind despite settling into the game defensively and on the mound.

On the mound, Sauska delivered a strong outing, working five innings while recording nine strikeouts, repeatedly generating swinging and called third strikes to keep Newman within reach and prevent the early deficit from growing. In the third inning, Charles Wilson sparked the lineup with a double to left field, beginning a stretch where the Greenies consistently placed runners on base but were unable to deliver the timely hit needed to cut into the deficit.

The pressure continued in the fifth inning as Tanner Robert singled and later advanced into scoring position during a developing rally that ultimately stalled. Newman again threatened late when Robert reached after being hit by a pitch, Sauska followed with a single to right field, and Wilson added another base hit to keep the inning alive before the Knights escaped without allowing a run. Behind the plate, Wilson helped stabilize the defense by throwing out a runner attempting to steal second base and later executing a back pick at first base.

Falgoust’s Late Double Lifts Newman Past Central Private, 4–3

After losing to the host team on Friday, but overpowering Quitman High School 15-0 behind discipline, speed, and shutdown pitching, plus two hits, two walks and three RBIs from Peter Barras, Newman earned a hard-fought 4–3 victory over Central Private School on Saturday, using timely hitting and strong relief pitching to break a late tie and secure the win.

The Redhawks took an early lead in the second inning, scoring twice to move ahead 2–0. Newman answered in the bottom of the third when Sauska drove in a run to cut the deficit in half and keep the Greenies within striking distance. After Central Private added another run in the fifth inning, Wilson sparked the rally with a double to left field, and Sauska followed with an RBI single to bring Newman within one at 3–2.

The decisive moment came in the bottom of the sixth, when Tanner Robert reached base and advanced into scoring position, setting the stage for the tying run. Moments later, Falgoust delivered the biggest swing of the game, driving a double to right field that brought home the go-ahead run and gave Newman its first lead of the afternoon at 4–3. Villere closed the game on the mound, retiring Central Private in the seventh to seal the comeback victory.
