Last Tuesday (2/11), the top-seeded soccer boys played a quarterfinal match at home against the eighth seed, Episcopal School of Acadiana on VSN here.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead with a Cole Spady goal, the boys doubled the lead eight minutes on a far post breakaway goal by Alex Dulitz, assisted by Spady. On the final kick of the first half, Will Pinkerton’s strong header off a Rylan Claverie corner kick made it 3-0. The Falcons clawed one back in the second half on a deep free kick, but Paul Richard quickly answered with a redirected header from a pass by Jack Hance.

Later, Claverie played a ball in that deflected off the keeper and was alertly knocked in by defender Rowan Dravid. Finally, in their 15th corner kick of the evening, George Villere became the sixth Greenie goal scorer of the night with a header off the service from Claverie. With the impressive 6-1 win, the boys remained undefeated and advanced to the Division IV final four.

Three days later, the Friday night lights (2/14) meant the boys would take on Shreveport’s Calvary Baptist School, the 13th seed, in the state semifinals on VSN here. Although the Greenies were held to only 2-0 at the first half, it was 6-0 by the time the dance ended, with two goals apiece by Cole Spady, George Villere and Rylan Claverie. The Greenies defense held firm throughout the game with defensive transition specifically being an area of growth throughout the season. Passes were crisp, accurate, and tactically astute. In the Division IV soccer playoffs on Friday (2/14), the girls soccer team (#2 seed) hosted Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, the third seed, on VSN here. The objective for the Greenies was to end the Knights’ season in defeat for the third year in a row, and the Newman girls did not disappoint.
Though Episcopal took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute off a header from a corner kick, that shot ended up being the Knights’ only one of the first half. In the 35th minute, a deep shot from Catherine Lapeyre deflected off the goalkeeper and Avery Summerour raced in and fired the ball into the back of the net the tie the score at 1-1.

Most of the second half was scoreless and it looked as if the match might be headed to overtime. With only 12 minutes in regulation, a long pass from Kingsland LeBourgeois found junior Brooke Montano waiting alone on the far post, where she headed the ball past the Knights’ goalkeeper to score the thrilling game winner.

Girls Basketball
On Thursday (2/13), the varsity girls basketball team had an unfortunate end to its regular season with losses to Archbishop Hannan High School on February 11 and St. Mary’s Dominican High School. Nevertheless, the team had a very strong January and lots of success in February, and those strong performances allowed the team to finish the season with an in-state record of 13-12. Coaches Blackerby, Christian, and Lumas have emphasized how proud they are of the team’s resilience, effort, and progress this season.
The team is seeded #7 for the Division III (Select) playoffs. Securing one of the top eight seeds means that the team has a bye for the bi-district round of play. On Monday (2/24) at home in the Palaestra (time not yet determined), the team will compete in the regional round against the winner of the February 19 game between Holy Savior Menard Central High School and Rapides High School. The winner of that regional game will advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday, February 27. At this point, the possible opponents in that quarterfinal game are #2 seed Academy of the Sacred Heart, #15 seed Sarah T. Reed High School, or #18 seed St. Mary’s Academy. The state tournament semi-final and final championship games will be held during Mardi Gras week in Hammond. All N!
